WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Thaddeus McCotter, a guitar-playing Michigan congressman with an independent streak, formally launched a longshot bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination on Saturday.

The conservative McCotter made his formal announcement at an Independence Day rock festival outsideDetroit. He filed the paperwork on Friday to enter the Republican race for the right to challenge Democratic President Barack Obama.

"Through your hard work and through your principled determination to bequeath to your children a better America, we will restructure the government," McCotter told the crowd at the rock festival, where he played guitar with a band. "... What we need inWashington is someone who knows the future is not big government -- it is self government."

McCotter, 45, is arock 'n' roll fan known to quote song lyrics and at times challenge his own party leaders. He enters the campaign as a heavy underdog with little name recognition or money.

The five-term congressman from the Detroit suburbs is a strong supporter of the car industry and backed the industry bailout but he has appealed toTea Party conservatives with calls for a fundamental restructuring of government.

McCotter said on Friday there was room for more candidates in the Republican race, which is now led by formerMassachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.

"I want to take my message out and ... see if people respond to it," he said in an interview with a Detroit radio station. Subscribe to *Elections 2012*

Never heard of him. Do you know much about him?

I grew up in the area that is now McCotter's district, but I left a long time before he was around.

It's a solidly middle class area that encompasses:

- Livonia, Plymouth, Northville, Novi (tidy, family-oriented, law and order suburbs)
- Westland, Wayne, Redford (very blue collar)
- Canton (school teachers and other government bureaucrats)
- Milford, Wixom, South Lyon, and Commerce (rural, exburb mixed economic class)

It's actually a well-drawn district. Ann Arbor (college town) is to the west. Dearborn (Muslim), Detroit (Black) and Inkster (Black) are to the southeast. West Bloomfield and Farmington (upper-middle class) are to the northeast. Brighton and other rural areas are to the north and northeast.

My understanding is that McCotter is pretty conservative. It's surprising that he could win there. When I lived there, the Congressman was Carl Pursell -- a typical post-WWII unprincipled GOP sell-out.

Just some local talk that he is playing soiler for Romney's bid for the WH.

Thadeaus can't stand Romney due to his 'let them fail' attitude over the Detroit auto bailout.

Also, he approached the RNC to seek support to run for Senator against Stubenow but they gave him the cold shoulder. The RNC has essentially wrote-off trying to defeat her.

Never swear "allegiance" to anything other than the 'right to change your mind'!
