Title: GM Expands Chevrolet Volt Orders To All 50 States, Lowers Price

General Motors opened up orders for the Chevrolet Volt to all 50 states today, lowering the base price for the 2012 model by about $1,000 and adding four option packages.

The 2012 Volt will start at $39,995, including delivery, and customers may be eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit. GM was able to lower the base price because the car has more optional content now that it's available nationally, the automaker said today in a statement. The 2011 Volt had been available in eight states and Washington, D.C., and only had three option packages.

GM is expanding Volt ordering as it prepares to add two shifts worth 2,500 jobs to the Detroit-Hamtramck plant that builds the car. Volt engineers are seeking to cut the car's cost through powertrain and production improvements, which will mostly be used to make the car profitable, rather than slash the price for consumers.

GM plans this year to build 16,000 of the Volt and its European version, the Opel Ampera. That includes about 3,500 for overseas delivery and 2,500 as demos at dealerships. Next year, GM plans to build 60,000 Volts at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant, with 45,000 designated for the U.S.

Detroit-Hamtramck this spring discontinued its other two cars, the Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne, leaving it free to build just Volts until the 2013 Malibu starts production next year. The factory will also assemble the next-generation Chevrolet Impala, expected to start production by 2013.

The plant is in a four-week shutdown to update for Volt and Malibu production. After it restarts, the factory will start adding the second shift of workers, with the third to start at an undisclosed future date.

General Motors Confirms 2,500 New Jobs Coming at Chevrolet Volt Plant

Detroit assembly line will quadruple plug-in production, add Chevy Malibu and Impala models.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on May.25, 2011

ollowing up on an earlier announcement that it would invest $2 billion in 17 U.S. plants, General Motors today provided additional details confirming it will add 2,500 jobs at the Detroit plant producing the well-publicized Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid.

Known as the “Poletown” plant, the factory will add a second shift later this year and is expected to introduce a third shift later on as it takes on several additional product lines. Among other things, the factory is beginning to roll out a European version of the Volt, called Opel Ampera, which GM believes will increase demand enough to support the production of 60,000 plug-ins next year – about four times more than it expects to produce in 2011.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yep...they are hiring people and expanding the model line from 16K to 60K because no one is buying the car.
These are nice cars that fill a niche. Eugene uses these for parking control duties and this saves them money. They are a lot cheaper and easier to use compared to their conventional small gasoline powered vehicles.
In a congested metropolitan area small efficient vehicles make a great deal of sense. As does the use of every range of bicycle from three speed antique to a truck bike that can deliver many things faster and more efficiently than a motorized vehicle.
Exactly. And I am familiar with the facility currently being used to manufacture this Eugene, OR made vehicle. It too is very economical to build, and the people who designed it are incredibly ecologically savvy on ow to keep it's cost down and it's production footprint small and shallow.
A short abortive blog Mad Dog did as his old nick at TOS which was Skull Stomper. A 'friend' of his at TOS gave it to me. It seems he not only didn't have many friends there, and those he did think he had were relieved and happy he was banned.
Thought you might find it's small bit of insight about him would be interesting.
Looking at his home town on the map for example shows him to be a stone's throw from Anchorage. So he's not 'roughing it' in a remote rural area nearly as much as he historically claims he is.
I was amused Stone took to using his *spit* and other potty mouth tactics at 4UM. The two have a lot in common.
I thought him insane when I watched him as 'Skull Stomper' there and he was so outrageous all his posts were nuked when he was zotted. Usually they just turn an account off at FR.
OK, look at the Mitsubishi iMIEV fully electric vehicle. There's also a petrol version which is to all intents and purposes the exact same vehicle but for a different drive train system.
Mitsubishi shows the differences between the gas and electirc model's carbon footprint as striking. And not in the way you present it.
Petrol Version: 0.056l/km or 0.54kWh/km.
Electric Version: 160km range, 16kWh battery; therefore 0.1kWh/km
Here's some data regarding the carbon footprint of gas vs. electric cars during manufacture process.
Estimated carbon emissions during production (tons of CO2) Gasoline vehicle: 5.6 Hybrid vehicle: 6.5 Plug-in hybrid vehicle: 6.7 Battery electric hybrid: 8.8
Estimated lifecycle carbon emissions (tons of CO2) Gasoline vehicle: 24 Hybrid vehicle: 21 Plug-in hybrid vehicle: 19 Battery electric hybrid vehicle: 19
Proportion of emissions during production (%) Gasoline vehicle: 23% Hybrid vehicle: 31% Plug-in hybrid vehicle: 35% Battery electric hybrid vehicle: 46%
Thanks, I wouldn't mind the URL too to best compare it with my sources. I know that one thing I factor in here is as production of these vehicles goes up, the manufacturing costs and consumption will drop quite a bit.
Not to mention the recycling of a hybrid or electric is easier and more comprehensive in terms of what can be recycled than your average gasoline machine.
I generally ride a bicycle around town. If I go to Portland I try to take the train which is am option I can bring my bicycles with me when I use it.
If I drive I usually take a motorcycle. If I do ever get a new car though, it will be an electric. Historically I've generally driven air cooled VWs as I can take them apart and put them together almost blindfolded - including the process of re-building the engines.
But we as a nation really need to get away from our dependence on oil, which is something we are going to have to do if we want to reduce the influence of the oil producing nations in our lives.
As Plug ins and Battery hybrids become more popular and production methods refined the footprint is only going to go down.
Oceander has stated several times that he is not "site admin", Boofer.
And, as is required of me when I receive such an email, I informed IT of the email who turned it over to legal who wrote a letter to Google stating that an attempt at identity theft was done using a gmail account. IF Oceander is a member of the Bar in the State of NY - as I have been told that he is - he really should have known better than to do what he did.
But stop being stupid. He knows who I am because of you, Dick.
A poster has to be invited to reply? I didn't know that, but it's something you also need to remember.
You mean this Badeye is the real Badeye? And not "Badeye after 5" or "Badeye on drugs" (or maybe "Badeye off drugs") or any of the other amusing puppets set up in his honor?
I really hesitate to engage in conversation as it plainly wouldn't be that. I banned him for the reason that conversation was the very thing he avoided. Posting to LP was something that, if he wasn't paid to do, was something he should have been paid for. Thankfully, for LP's sake, Goldi finally realized both the lack of value and the liability he is.
I plainly will not have the stamina or time to spar with him. I've much more important things to do, and no good would come of it anyway -- such is the limitation of these forums. He won't change, and neither will I so what's the point?
As for my "folding like a cheap suit" or lawn chair or what have you, (whatever his latest colorful description for me is), I freely admit that I did retreat from a court fight. I can only claim credit in recognizing that the deck was indeed stacked against me in that room, that the judge did not want to hear my case and therefore chances of winning it was less than what I had projected up front. Indeed the charges were more than simply driving without a license but in fact involved a obstruction of justice which, unlike the former charge, was an actual criminal accusation which raised the stakes to an absurd level. I had in fact already grown weary of the whole thing some months before, realizing that trying to make a difference by standing up for what's morally right was quite futile in modern day America. Perhaps that's something Badeye learned long before me, in which case he may have a right to gloat.
My pessimistic conclusion, whether it was projected on my part or actually accurate, was that the the judicial system in the USA is quite inept and disfunctional. It's an institution with a life of it's own, or perhaps more akin to a zombie-like "undead" life to it, which will keep moving in it's mindless manner and continue to play it's part in the moral decline of America.
If I can claim credit for anything relating to that episode, it's that I was honest enough to be transparent about it as I was at all steps related to driver licensing, which is something my critics have never given me credit for, but nonetheless something I should, without any argument, get credit for. But I obviously never held my breath for that. Some critics, such as the aforementioned, have their own agenda's, after all, and being honest and giving credit where credit is due is not one of them. That alone satisfies me that I'm the better man.
And yes, I am in Ecuador as I type. It's a beautiful country, especially at this dryer time of year at 8000 feet in perpetual spring with great views of mountains near and far, and not one on the verge of an economic disaster, if that is indeed what the USA is on the verge of, which indications from many sources say is at hand. Frankly, being in the USA is a liability for those there and being out of the country is far from bizarre, but rather more prudent. Ecuador's economy is much less sophisticated but I suspect that will be an asset in the event of a global crash, as simpler economies will not break as much. For those that remain in the states, I can only wish the best.
Thanks for the ping there, war.
Neil
Hey Neil...
Boofer is indeed THE Boofer...the same sniveling mass of lying shit that you banned from LP. I still laugh at how you showed up to "congratulate" him on reaching 60K posts or some insane number that I never even approached even though I posted regularly for 3 years after Goldi banned his snooping ass for good.
You were cordial from the onset with that post and were still able to reduce him to a whining oversated sac of pus within 2-3 posts. Always marveled at your ability to do so...as Boofer says, "The LP database doesn't lie." Your ability to have him publically display his goofies is well documented there.
One look at his "contribution" to this thread reveals him as the same liar that he has always been.
Please note: Due to your account status (Probationed), you may make 10 comments per day. You have made 1 comment(s) so far today.
