Police and firemen in Alameda, California watched a man drown on Monday after realizing they did not have proper certifications for water rescue, leaving them open to possible lawsuits if they attempted to save him. The drowning victim, 53-year-old Raymond Zack, was apparently suicidal, according to a report from the scene. He waded out about 150 yards into cold waters off Crown Beach in Alameda and took about an hour to drown himself. A crowd of about 75 gathered to watch the bizarre scene, which saw police and firemen just standing at shoreline watching helplessly. After the man had drowned, authorities couldn’t even go into the surf to retrieve the body. They instead recruited a passer-by for the job. City officials reportedly blamed the incident on budget cuts and said they would have a discussion about why Alameda, an island city, does not have proper authorization to rescue people from the waters surrounding it. This video is from ABC 7 in San Francisco, Calif., broadcast May 30, 2011.

Here's the real headline: Government bureaucrats allow their customer to die. Fire and rescue services can and should be privatized. There are many private rescue / ambulance services in the country and even some private fire services. As a general rule, they do twice as good a job (using very measurable statistics) at half the cost of government services. In other words, they are 4 times better. Same with trash collection. There is no reason whatsoever for the government to monopolize these things. Doing so puts us all at risk.

There isn't a single person in America who has ever paid 90% of their income in taxes. The average amount of taxes paid by Americans after WWII was 18% of their income. The average amount of taxes paid by the wealthiest 400 people was 26% of their income. The 90% rate came with plenty of deductions to lower the actual tax burden to 26%, but you aren't smart enough to understand this.

Mine was on why we should privatize trash collection. Everyone, especially the teacher, went berserk. NO ONE will PAY... TRASH will PILE UP in the streets... RATS WILL BE EVERYWHERE!!!!! Today, I live in Washington State where I have to directly pay a private company to pick up my trash. People DO pay. Trash is NOT piling up in the streets. Rats are NOT everywhere. In fact, private trash companies are 6 times more efficient than their government counterparts. 6 times. The people in my high school class were such unimaginative people that they simply didn't have the mental bandwidth to understand how something could be both different and better. The vast majority provide better services at lower costs than government monopolies. How do you see that working; California spends $7,500 annually per student, a good private school in this area charges in the neighborhood of $33,000 tuition per student per year. For the 2009-2010 school year there were 512,826 students in private schools, k-12, in California. Would you give every student a voucher in the amount of $7,500 to spend at the school of their choice? If so, adding more than half a million students into the system would increase state costs (raise taxes) considerably, while still leaving the good schools out of reach for most students. The other possibility would be to divide the same amount of money among a larger pool of students further stressing the public school system. Of course we could commit as a nation to making public schools excellent.

Not everyone is going to get into or stay in the middle class o. There are innumerable factors many of which are beyond their control that could put them in that position. One possible scenario is that someone has a car accident that disables them temporarily (or permanantly) they lose their job and lose their coverage and then can no longer afford insurance. In regards to the elderly most people live from pay check to pay check and couldn't possibly save enough money to pay for health insurance in their retirement years. Not that in a "free" market an insurance company would want to cover the elderly. But if health care were like any other "service" it wouldn't matter if it were affordable or not. But unfortunately lacking it can mean life or death.

Those unemployed, those below a certain level of income and pensioners are excluded from the "savings" mandate. Government doesn't own you insurance. Again, incorrect, Singapore most certainly has a two-tier system that includes a public option. Singapore also has a national system of catastrophic coverage. Singapore also heavily subsidizes hospitals.

If per capita income is ~$45K and take home is ~$37K, there is absolutely no way that anyone could "chip in" the $80k a year needed to properly take care of an elderly person. We just tried to do it with my Mom with 4 of us and we lasted about 6MOS before we all realized that we were headed to bankruptcy. Both my mother and father required care in the last years of their lives. For 4 years that was my life. It is impossible to do it without help and that help is expensive. Even with SS and Medicare the out of pocket expenses are considerable; without that, it would have been impossible. My sibling and I just went through that, but mom wanted to die at home and got her wish. But only because we insisted that she remain ambulatory as condition of staying at home. We still needed outside help (thankfully she qualified for Hospice) due to her uncooperative episodes as like many she respected the opinions of strangers over her children, one of whom is a nurse. Now it's on with the estate stuff, and wouldn't you know it's the one heir who spent virtually no time or effort with her in the last year of her life who is throwing the monkey wrench.
The argument now is that with the decreased police force it will probably bring more crime to the downtown area. Plus the Maloofs had accepted the 75 million debt remaining on the Arco Arena site which they had plenty of time to pay down and didn't.

My mother wanted to be at home. She should have been on hospice but her doctor delayed until two days before she passed away. My dad choose to be in a board and care home after his stroke. Now it's on with the estate stuff, and wouldn't you know it's the one heir who spent virtually no time or effort with her in the last year of her life who is throwing the monkey wrench.
