MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin officials say the protests at the Capitol over public workers' collective bargaining rights cost more than $7.8 million for police, but that damage to the Capitol will only cost about $270,000.

Department of Administration officials say the police cost is based on claims from more than 200 police departments and other state agencies. Thirty-two police agencies have not yet submitted claims.

DOA officials also say a Capitol damage report found that protesters only caused "3-5 years of wear" on the building in the course of two weeks. About $112,000 should be spent repairing damage to stonework.

The figure is far lower than DOA Secretary Mike Huebsch's initial estimate of $7.5 million in damage. The department later revised those figures, saying it would cost as little as $350,000.

Considering the damage Scott Walker does to his state pushing the radical agenda of the Koch blokes I find this to be very much a non-issue.

The most important thing is to get Wisconsin on the right track again, and to neutralize this brand of anti-union fascism that is trying to be exported to other states.

Considering the damage Scott Walker does to his state pushing the radical agenda of the Koch blokes I find this to be very much a non-issue.

What is at issue is the effort the governor made to discredit the protesters so he could justify denying them access to the capital building in violation of the Wisconsin Constitution. He went to court claiming it would cost the state half a million dollars just to estimate the damage and $6 million to fix what those dirty, careless protesters did

This included a March 2, 2011, memo from state architect Dan Stephans, who oversaw a $145 million restoration project in 2001. The memo says 400 hours of time by a "qualified team" would be needed to inspect the building and grounds for damage at a cost that could reach $500,000. In addition, he wrote, 240,000 square feet of the building need attention -- and it would take a crew of 20 a minimum of 12 weeks. That’s $6 million for the interior, and another $1 million to replace sod and shrubs outside.

So why does that matter?

It matters because the same people who took a bogus estimate into court for the purpose of ginning up outrage and denying citizens of their Constitutional rights are playing "let's you and him fight" with taxpayers against state employees and unions.

It matters because they have demonstrated that their numbers are based on politics, not facts.

Yes, thanks; I am aware on how contrived this is. I've heard this stuff before first hand.

I read Walkers insulting and dismissive belittlements about those who protested so bravely there and keep doing so which shows in and of itself how empty this words were.

The fight won't be an easy one, but I have faith in the people of Wisconsin being able to take back their state.

I know for a fact that any capitol in any state could stand money spent on it for deficiencies, because that's just how it is with a heavily used facility.

If this is all Walker has as a talking point, he's in serious trouble.

Walker and his ilk would rather public buildings were museums than used by the people for their intended purpose.
