Computers-Hacking Title: PDF Layers in Obama’s Birth Certificate We have received several e-mails today calling into question the validity of the PDF that the White House released, namely that there are embedded layers in the document. There are now several other people on the case. We looked into it and dismissed it. The PDF is composed of multiple images. That’s correct. Using a photo editor or PDF viewer of your choice, you can extract this image data, view it, hide it, etc. But these layers, as they’re being called, aren’t layers in the traditional photo-editing sense of the word. They are, quite literally, pieces of image data that have been positioned in a PDF container. They appear as text but also contain glyphs, dots, lines, boxes, squiggles, and random garbage. They’re not combined or merged in any way. Quite simply, they look like they were created programmatically, not by a human. What’s plausible is that somewhere along the way — from the scanning device to the PDF-creation software, both of which can perform OCR (optical character recognition) — these partial/pseudo-text images were created and saved. What’s not plausible is that the government spent all this time manufacturing Obama’s birth certificate only to commit the laughably rookie mistake of exporting the layers from Photoshop, or whatever photo editing software they are meant to have used. It’s likely that whoever scanned the birth certificate in Hawaii forgot to turn off the OCR setting on the scanner. Let’s leave it at that. UPDATE: I’ve confirmed that scanning an image, converting it to a PDF, optimizing that PDF, and then opening it up in Illustrator, does in fact create layers similar to what is seen in the birth certificate PDF. You can try it yourself at home. Poster Comment: See, as I pointed out numerous times yesterday, layers are a natural part of a PDF document. You read it here first. The layers thing is a pathetic attempt to baffle with bullshit when the invented facts get melted away by the light of day of a long form birth certificate release. No surprise there.

#8. To: Skip Intro (#3) True. It's one thing to get Dan Rather to screw up because he and his people did not analyze the documents that got him in trouble for word wrapping technology what was not widely used what the alleged documents were allegedly made, it's another to think people don't know what a PDF file is and how that format works. They are hoping some more attempts at creative lying with bull shit tactics will word to counter the light of day. But unfortunately for them, people do know and understand explanations about how software works, and the long form still exists and is safely protected from these people who would destroy it to try to make their fairy tales seem like reality where it belongs, in a document vault where real adults can access it as they need it.
Replies to Comment # 8. As I posted somewhere else, Obama has access to the services of the US Mint. If he wanted to invent a perfect BC he certainly could have done it. So, playing devils advocate, let's say it is a fake. No one will ever be able to tell, certainly not from a digital image loaded on their computer. Of course, there's always the simple explanation that this really is a certified copy of the records from Hawaii, but what's the fun in that?
