In 2001 the newly elected Bush administration sought to nullify California's CAFE standards (so much for Republican support for state's rights) which were nothing more than on target for complying with Bush the elder's legislation. While Detroit was whining "its too hard, we can't" Japan was doing it. We all know what happened after that - Japan ate our lunch, again, and Detroit ended up on life support. That doesn't make sense... because......the CAFE standards are "HIGHER" in California (you live there.. right) than in any other part of the country. So if Detroit was whining "Its too hard, we can't" then Detroit slit its own throat.. (or should I say the unions slit their own throat)...... not Bush.... When you're paying somebody close to 6 figures a year to put screws in a dashboard then you are slitting your own throat!!!!!

That's exactly right, they slit their own throats; I don't think unions held the knife though. California sued.

If you can't compete with you opponents then you go down.... right.... They held the knives themselves and had the nerve to whine about it.... I've seen up close the end result of the auto unions, Detroit is a slum and all of the auto plants in Dayton are gone.... That's a lot of people who are "NO LONGER EMPLOYEED" and some of them "NO LONGER HAVE PENSIONS" (some are my friends). Auto Unions aren't about the "WORKER" anymore, its all about the Union bosses and their leash holders the Dumbassocrats....... I've seen it I know....

I guess you were already aware of this. Emission systems have a lot to do with gas mileage, just ask any automotive engineer.

So what has that got to do with gas mileage standards?? We're free to increase MPG, since we don't worry about harmless emissions like CO2. Plants love it, and we have more horsepower than most of California too. Business is booming at speed shops, where smog equipment is changed out for stuff that works. No smog inspection required in this California county, CARB region. In our own small way, we're saving the planet, from eco-nuts.

Yes I blame "some" of the unions for "some" of the stupid decisions "their" management made. Like I said before paying some nimrod almost 6 figures to put screws in a dash isn't smart, you just priced yourself out of the game.... consequently, "American Brand" vehicle production dropped way down in this country....... There used to be "Auto" plants here in Ohio, where are they now???? not here (consequently population is way down)..... Detroits population used to be over 2 million now its less than 750,000.... why????? the auto plants are gone.... If the union management isn't stupid then WTF are they exactly??? It sure isn't smart!!!! So is it smart to give the Dumbassocrats all of their employees union dues and some of their pensions to help get them elected...... Sure doesn't look that way where are all of the "workers".... laid off.... retired with no pension..... or working for a non-union company...... Oh by the way you forget I work for a "private union" so yes I do have some perspective.......

Not without a way to store the energy. The sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow. They will never be anything more than niche technologies unless there is a way to turn solar and wind energy into energy that can be stored until it's needed. Yes, using solar and wind to split hydrogen from water, which can be stored and transported is a way to do it. Most of the major auto companies are investing in fuel cell technology. I've been saying for a few years that fuel cells, not plug-in electrics are probably the future. But there is a monumental task of creating a hydrogen infrastructure, including refueling stations. It will start happening in Hawaii and Germany shortly. So, we'll see.
Now here is a true environmental visionary

You tell me, since you're the one who posted they are two completely unrelated items I just wondered what you meant cause different fuels have different emissions levels. Fuel economy is determined by a dynamometer test that measures carbon in the fuel. If you know how much carbon is contained in a gallon of whatever fuel it might be, then you can calculate its "mileage". But, because that fuel has a specific amount of carbon (no matter what) in it per gallon its going to have the "same amount of emissions" (no matter what)no matter how far you drive on a gallon of fuel.... So in effect saying a car has such and such emissions is actually kinda irrelevant. You can't control "emissions" until you find a way to reduce the carbon content in any fuel...... Now different fuels "emit" different levels of CO, CO2, NOx, and particulate matter. For instance diesel actually has less CO2 emissions than gasoline. But since it emits more of the other 3 it is much worse for the atmosphere than gasoline. What does this all mean???? Manmade Global Warming is a Hoax.... he he he he he......
