A strange thing happened in Wisconsin. Stranger than the 14 Democratic senators — fleebaggers, somebody called them — who left the state for weeks. Stranger than the sight of cops dragging protesters — none of them, unfortunately, wearing cheeseheads — from the state Capitol.

Yes, this time the reviled teachers unions won. And the lazy/parasitic — your choice — state employees unions also won.

OK, they didn't technically win. In fact, if you want to be technical about it, the bill that passed in Wisconsin means the unions lost in every conceivable way. They lost on bargaining rights. They lost on automatic collection of dues. They lost so badly they now have to recertify yearly.

A few years ago Governor Daniels of Indiana eliminated bureaucrat collective bargaining. People were outraged and his poll numbers dropped into the 30s. A couple of years later, he was overwhelmingly reelected.

If Walker's actions help Wisconsin and city governments close their budget gaps and create jobs, he'll be a hero. If not, he'll be a crap head. It's just that simple. I'm betting on the former.

We'll see.
