Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker wants a 26% pay raise for his chief of staff, former Ald. Tom Nardelli, while bypassing traditional County Board approval in quietly issuing large pay raises over the summer to several other top aides. Nardelli would get the biggest pay increase of top-tier county officials, a nearly $20,000 raise to $95,000 a year. Seven county administrators also scored increases of up to 12.5%. Some supervisors are upset about being left out of the decision-making process for many of the raises and say Walker's timing couldn't be worse. Heavily rewarding a few top managers while Walker puts final touches on a 2009 budget that's expected to call for scores of layoffs of union workers sends a message of callous disregard, critics of the raises say. Among the other big winners among Walker's top aides was Mitchell International Airport Director Barry Bateman. His pay rises $13,595, or 11%, to $136,299 a year. Facilities Management Director Jack Takerian got an $11,771 (12.5%) raise, to nearly $106,000.

For example, Patrick Curley, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's chief of staff, gets more than $107,000 a year, Walker noted. It wasn't that Nardelli was demanding more money, but the higher pay might be needed to attract a good candidate to that post in the future, Walker said. I wouldn't know why each individual liberal would lie, and deliberately pass out disinformation, if they are in politics, it could be for votes, bills, monetary gain, etc., but it tells volumes about the character of that person, or anyone who practices this kind of childish deception. It shows their lack of integrity, their complete disrespect for the truth when it is given to them. It shows how ugly and dishonest this person is and not to be trusted, because anyone who spends their lives deceiving people and malipulating the truth, don't give a damn about your life, or anyone elses. Liars and disinformationists are everywhere, they are here on LF, and many websites, to spread their lies, disrupt, provocate, to do anything they can to divert attention from the Truth~ JMHO
OK, lets take a step back for a minute here. Lets put this in perspective. Not even going to bring up teachers and education, because I think it's clouding the deeper ramifications of the issue. Walker's $130million budget repair bill has to pass for his main budget bill to work. Why? Because without eliminating the negotiating power of the county and municipal workers everywhere and giving the local governments the big axe, his $3.6million budget coming up won't work. Walker's planning is to cut all state-provided support, the shared revenue, going to local agencies. Money that pays for maintaining roads, pays for the nursing homes, the public libraries, parks, law enforcement, all those portions of the economy that make everything work. Somebody living in Langlade or Ashland or Burnett counties pays the same income taxes that everyone else in the rest of the state pays. They pay the same state gasoline tax. The same state sales tax. All this money goes down to Madison. The part that comes back, the shared revenue, goes to the local governments and spent locally. When it gets axed, none of it comes back from Madison. But the roads still need to be plowed, the courthouse still needs to process deeds and hear cases, the county prosecuter and public defenders still need to try and meter justice, the old folks still need their care. The payments on the new fire station, the new courthouse, the new libary, the new bridges all still need to get payed. Where are you going to make up the difference? You can slash wages at the local level, but you can only cut so far. At that point, property taxes *will* go up. Maybe with a higher local sales tax, or increased fees for using the landfill or getting a building permit or who knows what. Again. Just like with Doyle. Just like with Tommy. Maybe the prosperous counties down south can spread it out and ease the pain enough, but I'm not so sure that folks Up North have got the revenue base to take more service cuts and still pay more taxes. My brother can't, my mom can't (I know I should help more), can you think of anyone who can? I don't care if you hate unions, dislike teachers or think that the people the county hires to plow snow or to wipe asses at the nursing home over on Langlade road are "freeloaders," like the radio guy thinks. I don't care if you are happy to see Badgercare gutted like a crappie and the working familes that are on it now are booted. In the end, it ain't gonna make any difference. I'm sorry this was long and wordy, but you can't explain some things in a little 8 second sound bite. If I was to try, though, it would sound like this: If you live in outside the rich counties down south, you're gonna get screwed by this plan. Badly. Very Badly. I would like to see the pompous and self righteous Yukon explain the Koch connection in this situation. the Koch brothers own a coal company subsidiary with facilities in Green Bay, Manitowoc, Ashland and Sheboygan; six timber plants throughout the state; and a large network of pipelines in Wisconsin. While Koch controls much of the infrastructure in the state, they have laid off workers to boost profits and at the same time Koch Industries owners David and Charles Koch awarded themselves an extra 11 billion dollars of income from the company. 43,000 dollars was also given to the Walker campaign by Koch Industries, and the Kochs helped Walker using a familiar and much-used politicial ploy that allows donors to skirt campaign finance limits by giving one million dollars to the Republican Governors Association (RGA). The RGA then spent 65,000 dollars on independent expenditures to support Walker. The RGA also spent 3.4 million dollars on TV ads and mailers attacking Walker's opponent. This well explains why this governor is so hell bent to leather to union bust away collective barganing rights I would say.
This coming week should be interesting in Wisconsin, indeed.

The County Board Personnel Committee held up Nardelli's raise last week, when it first came up for consideration. A dozen other top county officials had their pay frozen by Walker, including Parks Director Sue Black, who now gets $116,804. Walker said he'll give her a raise later. Supervisor Lynne De Bruin said the raises for Walker's top aides took supervisors by surprise. "In this economy and Milwaukee County's financial status, I'm very concerned about jumping salaries," she said. "Some of these folks got some pretty hefty raises." At the time Walker wasn't governor he was Milwaukee County Executive and Nardelli was his chief of staff. Compare Nardelli's total compensation to teacher's then you really should include what he is already collecting in government retirement checks with his current pay plus retirement he'll collect when he leaves his current job, plus the value of his government provide health insurance, life insurance and what ever else. Nardelli collects a $30,000-a-year pension from the city and another undisclosed sum from the Army, where he served more than 25 years and retired as a lieutenant colonel. Add in food stamps, free heat, and free healthcare and you get a more accurate picture.
Also factor in that the money you mentioned is not taxed.

The government would pay X amount for a job to be done. If they didn't like that wage they can get elected and change it. Or do a ballot initiative. They could also protest in the streets to get their elected officials to act. Do you not understand the problem with unions negotiating with politicians? You know the same ones they bribe with union dollars.
More and more people are. They collect their welfare or other government benefit. Then work under the table. I'm surprised you didn't know people do that. Now that you are informed of it maybe you will adjust your thinking.
