Company to stop making drug commonly used in executions

By Rob Stein

Washington Post Staff Writer

Saturday, January 22, 2011; 12:00 AM

The U.S. company that makes a drug most states use in lethal injection announced Friday that it would no longer produce the powerful anesthetic, a decision that throws capital punishment in the United States into disarray.

The decision by Hospira of Lake Forest., Ill., was prompted by demands from Italy, which does not have capital punishment, that no sodium thiopental - which the company had planned to make at its plant outside Milan - be used for executions, officials said.

"We determined we could not prevent the drug from being diverted for use in capital punishment," said Dan Rosenberg, a Hospira spokesman. He noted that the company never condoned the drug's use for lethal injection and had hoped to continue making it for medical use.

Hospira's move will force states and the federal government to look for alternatives to the drug, which could require lengthy approval processes and result in costly, long-running legal challenges.

The company had planned to shift production from a plant in North Carolina to a facility in Liscate, Italy. But after those plans became public, the Italian Parliament demanded the company ensure the drug would be used only for medical purposes.

Capital Punishment is an evil we need to ban in this country.

Why? Do you think the public is better served spending hundreds of thousands, and maybe even millions,of dollars feeding, providing medical care, housing, and providing guards for protection for people like Ted Bundy that if that money were spent buying food or providing medical care or housing for the truly needy?

And no matter how much you socialists pretend otherwise, there IS a limit to the amount of money the government can collect and divert for these purposes.

That's a circular argument. He can just as easily respond with something along the line of "You are for the government killing people, yet think only the government has the right to decide who will die and who will live."

As much as have no problem with executing violent criminals, I have a big problem trusting the government to only execute the guilty. There have been numerous examples of innocent people being put to death, or sitting on death row, due to government malfeasance.

Italy's corporate tax rate is not all that low.

The standard rate of Italy corporate tax (IRES) in 2010 is 27.5%%. In addition, local tax (IRAP) is imposed at a rate of 3.9%, bringing the effective tax rate to 31.4%.

So do I.

There have been numerous examples of innocent people being put to death, or sitting on death row, due to government malfeasance.

No question about it. The only effective way to stop that sort of thing is to make it mandatory to charge any court official or LEO that manufactures evidence against an innocent suspect or hides evidence proving innocence should be brought up on trial for kidnapping and attempted murder themselves.

AND have mandatory sentencing of a minimum of 20 years in a maximum security federal prison with no time off for good behavior and no pardons. Period.

I can guarantee you that this would have to be done only a couple of times in large cities where the press and media picked up on it,and that sort of thing would become as rare as rooster lips overnight.

Pre-existing conditions make me uninsurable, thus first class medical care is unavailable to me in the US.

Fortunately both the Congresswoman and her government employee husband have excellent health insurance provided to them by the American people.

Of course not. Not as long as they get to retain the right to go to the hospital of their choice and see the doctor of their choice.

Not to mention the undisputed right to refuse treatment.

Socialized medicine doesn't work that way, though.

The Veterans Administration hospitals are a perfect example of socialized medicine. Anybody that thinks socialized medicine is a good idea should be required to get ALL their medical treatment at a VA hospital for at least 2 or 3 years.

If that doesn't cure you of your love for socialized medicine, there is no hope for you.

One short example. A couple of years ago the VA wanted to amputate one of my legs due to infection I got from a botched operation at that very same hospital. They sewed me back up without reconnecting a big vein, and it killed the circulation in that leg. I told them I wanted a second opinion, and went to a outside doc that recommended varicose vein replacement surgery for me. By then the leg was so far gone (swollen to the point it burst in 3 places and was black and purple) the civilian doc was afraid to do the surgery because of the fear of spreading the infection,so I had to go to his office twice a week for a couple of months to get a pad impregnated with silver put over the leg and then wrapped with Ace bandages impregnated with a anti-biotic. It ended up costing me about 8 grand by the time it was over, but I still have both legs.

Now,neither the silver impregnated pads nor the varicose vein surgery were approved at the VA hospital,so they didn't even tell me such things were an option. They just wanted to amputate and give me a high-tech plastic leg. Which is insane when you consider the leg alone would cost a hell of a lot more than what I paid for the surgery outside, plus the cost of the amputation, hospital time, therapy, etc, etc, etc.

Socialized medicine is a "one size fits all" approach to medical care.

In England they were refusing heart bypass operations at one time to people who smoked or ate pork because their lifestyles contributed to their medical problems. Or at least that was the excuse used. The real reason is there wasn't enough money in the budget to provide bypass operations to everybody who needed them,so they practiced triage.

I did.

I was declared only 20% disabled and have too much money in the bank ($2,000 limit).

I am neither a lawyer or a doctor, and don't even play either on tv,but if your condition is a chronic one that does require care to preserve your life and health, you have grounds for an appeal.

FWIW,my understanding of the SS disability situation is that they ALWAYS turn you down the first time you apply unless you are hospitalized and dying,or in a wheelchair for life. Once again,it is a money saving thing. It keeps a lot of the people off the rolls that don't really belong there, but just want to get a check every month. THAT is the concern of a lot of people applying for it,not getting treated for medical problems.

Just don't agree to pay any of those shyster lawyers that advertise on tv that they specialize in SS disability cases. They end up getting a percentage of your SS check and you don't need them because if you have documentation from doctors saying your condition is permanent and needing constant medical care, you will get approved on the appeal without them.

If you have genuine medical conditions and you have paid into the system, you deserve to benefit from the insurance program that is SS. File an appeal. You can do this at the local SS office and don't need a lawyer to do it.

Small govt and govt distrusting conservatives seem to throw out their anti govt rhetoric when it comes to trusting the govt on these death penalties.

I am sort of in the middle on this. Mass murders (kills more than one) and seriel killers should get the death penalty because killing seems to be an urge with them and they may kill in jail but life in prison for the rest and they would get the death penalty if they attempt murder in jail.

You have to explain to me using basic right wing American ideology (remember you kooks consider Italy and the EU "socialist" even though most of Europe is ruled by right of center govts like Italy's) why "socialist" Italy (which right wingers tell us has more taxes and more regulations than America) is luring over production from North Carolina. Of course not. Not as long as they get to retain the right to go to the hospital of their choice and see the doctor of their choice.

I have never been on a private insurance plan that allowed that. There were choices, but you have to pick from the insurance provider's stable of doctors and hospitals.

The Veterans Administration hospitals are a perfect example of socialized medicine. Anybody that thinks socialized medicine is a good idea should be required to get ALL their medical treatment at a VA hospital for at least 2 or 3 years.

My ex-husband is in love with the VA and his VA doctor. They were able to get his diabetes under control for the first time - something the for profit, private providers were never able to do.

Now,neither the silver impregnated pads nor the varicose vein surgery were approved at the VA hospital,so they didn't even tell me such things were an option.

I'm sorry you had to go through that and certainly understand how that would sour you on the VA.

Trust me, the same thing happens in the private sector. My mother was told by her doctor that there was nothing that could be done for a condition she had. He said "I'm declaring you 100% disabled, go home". She ended up at Mayo clinic in Minnesota where they managed to clear up her condition in 3 weeks. Her private doctor in California said when he saw her again, "Some people believe in witch doctors, and some believe in institutions like Mayo. Its your ignorance the leads you to believe you got help". It turned out that the treatment she got in Minnesota was developed in a university medical center 5 miles down the road from her California doctor.

Socialized medicine is a "one size fits all" approach to medical care.

Socialized medicine and government health insurance are not the same thing. Swedes can go to any doctor or hospital in the country they wish. I believe the same is true in France. In Denmark one can choose a primary care doctor on a yearly basis and go to specialists that doctor works with at no cost or choose to see any doctor he wishes for any reason with 2/3 the cost paid by the government.

Single-payer national health insurance is a system in which a single public or quasi-public agency organizes health financing, but delivery of care remains largely private.

So what's your problem with "socialist" (per what you types consider "socialist") Europe if they can insure their population and attract businesses from America and produce first rate fire arms like Baretta and Glock?

Europeans actually consider Capitalism to be their economic system.

I have never been on a private insurance plan that allowed that. There were choices, but you have to pick from the insurance provider's stable of doctors and hospitals.

That's called a PPO. Most health plans are not PPOs. Most employers allow you to choose between a PPO and traditional insurance. Tradition insurance usually requires higher deductibles or copays, but that is what I have always chosen because I don't want restrictions on who I can see.

I feel Capital Punishment is unwarranted torture. IT has killed people who later turned out to be innocent, and when you factor in the costs of appeals and other expenses I don't see CP as being a cheaper option. not that cost should ever be a factor in determining who lives or who dies.

"But you approve of abortion, killing thousands of babies in the womb right????? "

Wrong. I have consistently opposed abortion for a very long time.

That's what you get for assuming.

I feel Capital Punishment is unwarranted torture.

I don't,as long as long as it is only applied to cold-blooded murderers and traitors. Please note I am NOT saying accomplices in a robbery that had no idea anybody was going to kill a victim, but to the actual killers themselves.

IT has killed people who later turned out to be innocent,

Follow my plan of charging cops,DA's,and judges who have knowingly created false evidence to convict someone innocent or who held back information that could have proven their innocence with attempted murder and kidnapping to be followed with mandatory MINIMUM sentences in maximum security federal prisons with no time off for good behavior, parole,or pardons, and that problem will disappear overnight.
