Steve Jobs 'Had Secret Cancer Treatment in Switzerland'

Apple CEO Steve Jobs secretly visited Switzerland to treat his cancer in 2009, it was revealed on Tuesday amid speculation surrounding Jobs' health after he took a third medical leave.

Fortune magazine on Tuesday cited former Apple director Jerry York, who died in March last year, as saying Jobs received radiotherapy to treat neuroendocrine cancer at the University Hospital of Basel during his second medical leave in 2009. At the time, a special form of hormone-delivered radiotherapy developed by the hospital was not available in the U.S., Fortune said. Jobs also had a liver transplant at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee the same year. His original cancer treatment was in 2004.

There is speculation that the reason for the liver transplant was also cancer, and the deteriorating condition of Jobs' liver or recurrence of cancer may have forced him to take leave again. However, doctors emphasize that the neuroendocrine cancer Jobs is battling is a very rare form with a slow pace of development and is treatable.

Because the FDA wouldn't allow the treatment here. Americans go all over the world for experimental cancer treatments because the FDA drags it's heals on approving new and innovative treatments in America.

It's another example of how the American government continually fails us.

So let me get this correct - Socialist European health care is less restrictive and bureaucratic. Got it.

So let's adopt Europe's health care model.......or will you now spin it to try and say America's ridiculous system is still better?

Not true in the case of Jobs is it? You have been suckered by right wing lies. The entire GOP philosophy is based on lies - of a narrative that is fiction.

You have to explain to me why "socialist" Europe can do what America's private health care system can not? You blame the FDA and thus bureaucracy and thus America's problem with govt but in Socialist Europe they would have more govt intervention per the theory. But it ain't so.

The Socialist British Are Much Healthier Than The Americans

A large study, which looked at the health of middle class, middle-aged, white residents in both the USA and Britain found that the British enjoy much better health than their American counterparts. Even though the USA has a much higher income per capita than the UK, about 25% higher, the British are far ahead when it comes to the health of its residents.

http://doctorwascher.com/Archives/2-22-09.htm

Health Differences Between Americans & Europeans

I have commented before about the striking discordance between the amount of money that we spend on health care in the United States and the health outcomes that we achieve with all of those dollars. At more than $2 trillion dollars per year, or more than $7,000 per citizen per year, the U.S. spends more on health care than virtually every other country in the world. One would, therefore, assume that all of those trillions of health care dollars would translate into a globally unsurpassed level of health and wellbeing in America. However, one would actually be mistaken in this assumption, as the United States lags behind many other countries of the world, including a few relatively underdeveloped countries, in several very important public health benchmarks. As if this were not bad enough, the world’s richest nation has an estimated 47 million uninsured citizens, with millions more possessing utterly inadequate health insurance coverage (millions of us in this country are just one serious illness away from financial ruin).

A new research study, just published in the American Journal of Public Health, provides a rather stark comparison between the health status of rich and poor adults in the United States and Europe. In this study, more than 17,000 adults between the ages of 50 and 74 years were interviewed from among 10 European countries. Nearly 7,000 Americans of similar age were also interviewed for this study. The researchers assessed these 24,000 middle-aged and elderly adults for 6 chronic illnesses that are commonly accepted as indicators of the overall health of a society. In general, the American adults reported poorer overall health than their European counterparts. While the differences in health between the two groups of adults were, not surprisingly, more pronounced among poorer patients, even the wealthier Americans reported more problems with their health when compared to wealthy Europeans. At the same time, the gap in health status between rich and poor was much smaller among Europeans than was observed among the American patients who participated in this study. (As a striking example of the health disparities between Americans and Europeans, heart disease, the number one cause of death in most developed countries, was present in 18 percent of Americans, but in only 11 percent of Europeans, in this study.)

Of course you don't like facts because it gets in the way of the fantasy that the the American "system works better than any other in the history of the world."

This in spite of the right wing talking points demolished by facts.

A) "Socialized" medicine in Europe costs less

B) Produces better results and is

C) Of such better quality that rich Americans go to Europe for cutting edge treatment (rather than the talking piont memo lie that they come to America for a cure).

Being a right winger in America is a mental disorder because even if told the truth with facts you stick to the fantasy narrative of the American right wing.

There was no problem with health care in this country until Hillary Clinton and her husband the co-president decided to politicize it in order to control it. Wanting to control the means of an industry is fascism. This country was not built on fascism. We had the best health care until you fascists decided to destroy it in order to rebuild it to your own specifications. This makes you a fascist, not a patriot. I just realized with this statement you guys made that up. The FDA does not ban testing of new drugs or procedures on people. Yes, it restricts mass use but trails on humans can continue with only reporting to the FDA on results.

This claim of the FDA denying treatment is an example of "Truthiness" which is a "truth" that a person claims to know intuitively "from the gut" without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts.

Why don't you bring up the fact that private insurance companies deny coverage of experimental treatments routinely in America (which makes it a lie to claim the FDA denies experimental treatments).

Of course Jobs is rich enough to not need insurance to cover any experimental treatment its just that the best of the best is in so called "socialist" Europe not in America.

The FDA does not ban testing of new drugs or procedures on people

Of course they do.

Dr. Alan Chow invented a retinal implant that helps some blind people see. Demonstrating that took seven years and cost $50 million dollars of FDA-approved tests. But now the FDA wants still more tests. That third stage will take another three years and cost $100 million.

But Chow doesn't have $100 million. He can't raise the money from investors because the implant only helps some blind people. Potential investors fear there are too few customers to justify their $100 million risk.

So Stephen Lonegan, who has a degenerative eye disease that might be helped by the implant, can't have it. Instead, he will go blind.

The bureaucrats say their restrictions are for his own safety. "There's nothing safe about going blind," he says. "I don't want to be made safe by the FDA. I want it to be up to me to go to Dr. Chow to make the decision myself."

FDA to Americans -- GO AHEAD AND DIE, GO BLIND, WHATEVER, WE DON'T GIVE A DAMN

Maybe he should move to Germany where the socialist govt would have no problem raising the money.

If capitalism worked he would be able to raise this money on the free market since a payoff would be expected, no?

Your own argument shows the failure of capitalism to fund medical science.

Here is evidence that money trumps the health of people in America not the FDA:

Gislin Dagnelie, who works with a team of doctors and engineers on developing retinal chips, said the company may be keeping a tight reign on results because, as a privately held company, Optobionics needs to attract investors.

"They picture things as going forward, and I don't doubt they are telling the truth about their patients doing well," Dagnelie said. "But I think they are somewhat overemphasizing how close they are to having a working device." Chow was not available for further comment...

Government idiots like you are blocking this poor guy's treatment. WHY? Because you are mindless bureaucrats who can do nothing but follow stupid rules.

My grandmother died well before her time in Germany because the dumb government doctors couldn't recognize a simple kidney disorder.

The human race is at a turning point. If we want to survive as a species, we need to eradicate from public life the 20% of the population who comprise the leftist parasites that are sucking the lifeblood out of society. Otherwise, we are all doomed.

I've already explained this you TWICE. This is the third time. I won't do it again.

Americans go all over the world from Asia, Latin America and Europe seeking cancer treatments.

Why???

The FDA requires companies to spend hundreds of millions of dollars over decades to bring new drugs to market. Europe and the rest of the world don't have these same type of regulations. So it's much easier to bring a new treatment to market in Europe, Japan, China, Chile, etc than it is in the U.S.

Are patients dying more frequently in those countries from bad drugs than they are in the U.S.????? NO THEY ARE NOT.

The U.S. has the worst government in the developed world. The very worst. People die in America because of the idiotic government regulations.
