Title: Government job cuts ravage California

Weighed down by a struggling economy, government agencies in California shed 37,300 workers last month — more jobs than were lost in the private sector — as cities and counties made their biggest payroll cutbacks since at least 1990.

What's more, analysts see more job cuts ahead as California faces an estimated $10-billion shortfall in the state budget that the next governor must address. Cities and counties, meanwhile, are still struggling with tepid sales and property tax revenue.

"Local governments are adopting austerity measures," said Jerry Nickelsburg, an economist with the UCLA Anderson Forecast. "They don't have confidence that they're going to get money to do otherwise."

Oakland laid off 80 police officers and delayed pothole repairs. Fullerton laid off 14 police officers and three firefighters, cut library hours and closed restrooms at several parks. Oceanside laid off 28 police officers and three firefighters, closed a swimming pool and a recreation center and eliminated the city Bookmobile.

"Decreasing sales tax revenues and decreasing property tax revenues mean that a lot of cities have had to do some belt tightening," Spiegel said.

Overall, the state's unemployment rate remained stuck at 12.4%, one of the highest in the nation. The state lost a net 63,600 jobs in September. Local governments shed 32,400 jobs, according to the monthly report from the state Employment Development Department released Friday.

A neighboring city has decided to eliminate its police and fire department and contract out for those services.

Thanks for the ping.

Here is the way I see it Lucy. The cuts are good. It is better that unproductive govt workers get laid off then people who actually have to do real work get taxed more destroying their lives and taking more jobs out of the private sector. They should shed more govt jobs. In every state and at the federal level too.

The cuts are good.

And the cuts contribute to California's unemployment stats.

It is better that unproductive govt workers get laid off then people who actually have to do real work get taxed more destroying their lives and taking more jobs out of the private sector.

Government employees are unproductive in that the work they do doesn't directly produce a profit, but they do preform real work none the less - police and firefighters for instance.

Police..not usually.

In 2009 there were 128 officers who died in the line of duty, and 133 so far this year.

I don't care for pigs. My daughters boyfriend came into our house through a window one night. I had to kick the punks ass. The police didn't do shit to him but charged me with assault. Screw the pigs.

I was at a concert downtown one day. Years ago. Some guy wanted to get to the portapotties out of turn. Me and my girlfrined (now wife) waited in line. The asshole popped me one in the mouth. I thought I was being smart going to the police and telling them about it. The Pig Dayton Police Officer Tenore (the prick) was flirting with some girls. He said he was busy. I walked away to find another officer. I eventually came back to that prick and told him the guy was going to get away and he loosened my tooth. He promptly said I was drunk (I wasn't anyhere close to drunk) and arrested me and let the guy get away.

I have other encounters. They have never helped me in my life. Screw those assholes. I would say 1 percent of cops are good. That is being generous.

After 39yrs of observation in this area, cops are the most USELESSS employees, about the best I could say for anyone of them is, they're good at hounding citizens and writing tickets, other than that, most people here can take better care of their own security and look out for their families.

I don't fall for that old BS line that cops are hero's, that they're brave for putting their lives on the line for their jobs, BS again, every man, or woman here who step outside their doors to go to work put their lives on the line, with one big difference....

Cops are ARMED to the teeth with revolvers and rifles, bp vests, tasers, clubs...and backup if they think that chihuahau just might chew on their pants leg....

Right now, the worst cop I ever wrote about is under a grand jury investigation, and if there is any justice, he'll get a first hand look at how it is to live without an arsenal to protect his sorry ass.

They could get rid of all the cops in this area, in three surrounding counties, and the people would still be able to take care of themselves, but without the threat, or fear of being bullied by an armed coward struttin his stuff, and thinks his own shit doesn't stink. jmho!

They have never helped me in my life.

My experience has been positive, except when I've gotten a ticket of course.

If you talk in real life the way you do here, that might have something to do with it.
