The Water Cooler Title: Empathy and Our Nation's Future A recent University of Michigan study is a call to action for those seeking the latter. Researchers found that college students today are about 40 percent lower in empathy than their counterparts from the 1980s and 1990s. Present-day students are less interested in the perspectives of friends and are less concerned for the unfortunate. Empathy is the ability to recognize, appreciate and respond to the feelings of other people. It is a fundamental building block of a healthy society. Empathy helps us understand our differences and our common ground. It enables us to go beyond the superficial to identify shared interests and accomplish collective goals. In an increasingly heterogeneous society, empathy is essential for cooperation and social cohesion and the pursuit of our nation's highest ideals, including fairness, justice and equality. The Michigan study joins a growing body of research that has found Americans growing more individualistic and isolated. Other studies have documented intensifying narcissism among college students since the late 1980s. Our society is becoming more disconnected and lonely, Jacqueline Olds and Richard S. Schwartz, Harvard psychiatrists concluded in their book "The Lonely American."

Empathy is more than that. It's the ability to read minds and project ideas. And nothing is more powerful.
#3. To: All (#2) Empathy is more than that. Ex: You can tell the GoM is a continuing epic fail by the reports that are streaming out and the Imperial City's determined ignorance of same. Same with Iraq/Afghanistan.
#4. To: All (#3) As America heads to the polls in November, let’s hope we don’t get fooled again. We’ve had an elegant sufficiency of “Big Lies,” now what we need are real citizen leaders who are willing to tell us the simple truth about all of these unsustainable programs. the above a post from happyquanza. Note the Total misdirection: That gov't is not really aiding and abetting the Kleptocracy of Finance/Military. That you have a choice, and you are not a serf. AgitProp.

The reality is that the US is desperate to counter balance the BRIC, mainly China, by seating India at the UN Security Council.
#6. To: All (#5) And how fittingly that this is the 'lord's day'. "Kurt Wise doesn’t need the challenge; he volunteers that, even if all the evidence in the universe flatly contradicted Scripture, and even if he had reached the point of admitting this to himself, he would still take his stand on Scripture and deny the evidence. This leaves me, as a scientist, speechless. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have a mind capable of such doublethink. It reminds me of Winston Smith in 1984 struggling to believe that two plus two equals five if Big Brother said so. But that was fiction and, anyway, Winston was tortured into submission. Kurt Wise—and presumably others like him who are less candid—has suffered no such physical coercion. But, as I hinted at the end of my previous column, I do wonder whether childhood indoctrination could wreak a sufficiently powerful brainwashing effect to account for this bizarre phenomenon." -R Dawkins And that's why EMPATHY is impossible with creationists/organized religion. There is extreme cognitive dissonance. That Society is paying them to understand a MEME which is not real.

To: All (#6) EMPATHY and BACTERIA: Trust your gut. 8D "Lyte’s team concluded that the vagus nerve, which extends into the colon, was probably transmitting the news of a gut infection to the brain areas involved in emotions. Reporting their results in the August 2007 Brain, Behavior and Immunity, the team also conjectured that the anxiety often exhibited by victims of bowel disorders may operate on the same network, which is not under conscious control." http://www.energybulletin.net/stories/2010-10-24/deep-thought-oct-24
#8. To: lucysmom (#0) A recent University of Michigan study Academic social engineers have made me vomit since I was in college, that's why I'm not full of their shit. Those who can keep it down need an enema, not empathy, imho.
#9. To: mcgowanjm (#3) You can tell the GoM is a continuing epic fail by the reports that are streaming out and the Imperial City's determined ignorance of same. How's the evacuation proceeding, mcclown? Has the death toll from Obama's oil disaster approached your predicted millions yet, dipshit?
#10. To: mcgowanjm (#6) I'm reading your stuff James. Keep on posting them.
#11. To: lucysmom (#0) The same thing has already happened in Europe. America gives more money to charity by every measure than any European country. As the government encroaches on our income, property, and rights, people start thinking more about themselves than their fellow man. "To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves is sinful and tyrannical." -- Thomas Jefferson #12. To: jwpegler (#11) America gives more money to charity by every measure than any European country. I've read differently, but I'm sure you've been there many times and observed first hand the lack of a giving spirit in each and every resident of the European continent.

#14. To: Ibluafartsky (#13) No, why. Do you recommend it?
#15. To: lucysmom (#14) No, why. You're great at creating a straw man.
