Poor taste? Well that’s the understatement of the year. Bob Jones University, known for its strict adherence to Christian doctrine, has seriously missed the mark on this one. In an attempt to easily identify freshman on campus, Bob Jones University has passed out “1st BJ” buttons in hopes that professors and upperclassmen alike will extend grace to those scrambling to get to class, or wandering around completely lost during their first week. It hardly takes the imagination of a pervert to determine what kind of controversy this has stirred up. The University of course, insists the “BJ” stands for “Bob Jones.” Bob Jones University is well-known in conservative Christian circles as a school with quite possibly the most legalistic interpretation of Scripture, and that has affected the public perception of the school. The University has enacted controversial policies for students such as the banning of interracial dating (until 2000 when that ban was lifted) and the refusal to admit any non-married African American students until 1975. The school has come under fire for meddling in student affairs down to determining skirt length for women, and dictating the appropriateness of “hand-holding” for students. If that’s the case… how the heck did the “1st BJ” button campaign get enacted? Is the BJU administration that blinded to modern cultural, oral sex references?
