DiPietro says he regrets calling Obama a Muslim

Doesn’t recall sending e-mails to Paladino

An e-mail apparently forwarded by State Senate candidate David J. DiPietro to Carl P. Paladino states that President Obama is a Muslim— an opinion DiPietro staunchly defended in one phone interview Friday before later repudiating it.

“Barack Obama is a Muslim,” said DiPietro, former East Aurora mayor. “I don’t like the president. I think he’s a Muslim. I think he’s a foreigner to our nation. I oppose every principle he stands for.”

He later said he spoke in the heat of the moment and apologized if he sounded offensive.

“He says he’s a Christian,” DiPietro said, referring to Obama. “Until that’s proven otherwise, I’ll take him at his word. I’m not going to question anyone’s religion. Your faith is your faith. I don’t question anyone’s faith. I just would like honesty with all his policies.”

DiPietro, one of three candidates vying for the State Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Dale M. Volker, R-Depew, was asked Friday about two e-mails forwarded to Paladino last December under his e-mail address.

The two e-mails were among a larger set that Paladino ultimately forwarded to others, landing the gubernatorial candidate in hot water because of their racial and sexual content.

DiPietro said he didn’t recall sending out the two e-mails, brought to light Friday by area blogger Alan Bedenko. One was described as a “stupid and juvenile” PowerPoint slide show comparing French and American women.

The other e-mail, with the words “Heeza Muzzlim . . . that’s why,” in

the subject line, talks about additional clues that U. S. citizens are “being led by a Muslim who follows the Islamic creed.”

DiPietro said he doesn’t waste time with e-mail and said his entire family has access to his home computer. When a reporter subsequently described the e-mails that were apparently forwarded, DiPietro spoke at length about how he agrees Obama is Muslim and not a true U. S. citizen.

He said the people who support him are conservative and Christian and agree with him.

“I think he is a Muslim. That’s my opinion. I’m not going to backtrack from it,” he said.

Two conversations later, however, he said that while he detests Obama’s policies and decisions, the president’s faith is not an issue.

“I think I was talking a little heated about that,” he said. “I’m not questioning him about his faith. I’m questioning him about his truthfulness with the people of the United States.”

If he has any hesitation about Obama’s legitimacy as a U. S. citizen, he noted that court cases have surfaced questioning Obama’s place of birth.

More than a dozen lawsuits have been filed since 2008 contesting Obama legitimacy as president, demanding the release of his original birth certificate even though he has provided a certified copy. Many of these lawsuits have subsequently been dismissed, but some are still on appeal in various states.

Obama, whose father was Muslim and mother was Christian, joined Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago two decades ago. He has attended church as president and continues to publicly profess Christian beliefs.

Assertions that he is secretly Muslim continue to persist, though major U. S. news organizations have tossed that perception as unfounded.

DiPietro castigated The Buffalo News for focusing on e-mails from December rather than on his critical allegations about his opponent, former Erie County Sheriff Patrick M. Gallivan.

DiPietro faces Gallivan, the Republican candidate, and Cynthia Appleton, a nurse and a Democratic Warsaw village trustee, in the general election. DiPietro, who has been endorsed by numerous Tea Party groups in Western New York, will be listed on the Tea Party line. Subscribe to *Tea Party On Parade*
