The title of this thread states the way mature people respect fair use. If you have editorialization, put it in a post. They who's piece is being used has a right to be respected enough to use the title they want for it.

And tell Stoner to quit editing and deleting posters' remarks - with rare exceptions, such as personal info being disclosed, excessive profanity and that's about it.
And how it is censorship? Explain? I submit that if a reporter works hard on a story, and management prints it with a title that best describes the content; it is patently unfair to see an interlocutor in a forum alter it with a title the owners of the piece would object to. Not only that, what if the news source of that article sees the graffiti put there to replace their words and then sues and damages the Fair Use policy forum owners depend on to repost pieces? Answer me that. Although honestly, I bet you have no concept at all what the Fair Use policy of reposting copyrighted material is anyway.

I don't always agree with how and what Stone delete, or why. But really Fred, I regretfully have to say it is his forum, and it is not my place to do more than give him feedback about it as you are doing here. Ultimately, the only real option is feedback, or by voting with your feet. If he thinks about what he is doing, listens and watches well how what he does affect his forum and why, he will eventually get it right. I give him the grace of tolerating him trying to run his forum right. He is after all human and is allowed too make mistakes like the rest of us are. I have moderated on DU; it is a hard job in ways you have to do it to know the pain of it all.
In the book 1984 by George Orwell, the main character Winston Smith works at a job altering past news pieces to get rid of inconvenient facts the current government disagrees with. This is censorship. What I am saying is, say a paper prints an article and entitles it(and I make this up to use as example), "Vaccine for the flu are good for your heart" to reflect a current result of a scientific study. The person reprinting it in forum XYZ hates vaccines, hates the government, thinks the scientists doing the work are a bunch of stupid faggots. So he re-titles it:"Butt Pirate Government Stooges out to kill you with vaccines." He or she succeeds in getting a spin on the piece before anyone else can post. He or she changes how people feel about clicking on the thread to read or comment on it. And even changes how the thread plays out. How is this fair? If I were the reporter or editor who's product this is, I would be pissed. I would be angry because I used my time and resources to create content for my news conduit, and someone takes it and rewrites it. As a poster seeing the altered piece in a thread, I would be reluctant to post on it, and would take care to note how the forum management reacts to these threads, and would discount the value of the forum if I felt that management can't see fit to respect the copy written product of a source of the articles used in threads. One has to keep an eye on the larger picture of the fair use policy of reposting for comment and the rights of those producing the articles, as well as making sure their views on them are known in forum. I merely state a level playing field and proper reposting policies are important to make a forum like this work. I in no way support censorship.

Stone has taken the leap of faith to be civil toward me even though by now he knows I am very stubborn and not into changing my views unless given clear and compelling reason to. So I make the leap of faith to post here and see if I can share what I have learned in my many years dealing with forums. I don't expect to change his political views of stripes; don't want that at all. I do however hate to see his hit and post count lowered, and posting community culled by problems with managing basic forum policy. I would be very very overjoyed if I left this place running better and flourishing because I was able to share some of my views, learned something myself - as I don't pretend to be perfect or a know it all - even if it was still politically the same as it is now. And this is a very conservative forum. It is not up to me to resent or try to change that. But as someone who cares deeply about fair use and this concept of forum, I feel obligated to help; hope for the best for all involved. It is easy to hate and try to tear something apart. But it is far better - even if harder to do - to put aside feelings of like or dislike and to see what you can do to help someone succeed at something. It is just that simple.

Full agreement. I've mentioned it a few times myself over the past few months. Doesn't add a thing to the site, and some of the worst 'rewrites' are flat out embarrassments to all of us that post here.

No, and unless Stone grasps and accepts the concept, it is one that will go nowhere. You can't enforce proper moderation without he who has the controls going along with it. It's his forum. He's the one that has to decide. All I can do is propose.

The reason I put clarifying verbiage in brackets is to denote that that is my words there. If I get a title - I'll make one up as an example: Eugene's Kesey statue stolen by Gypsies, I will bear in mind not everyone would get that. So I do this: Eugene's [city in Oregon][Ken]Kesey statue stolen by Gypsies I bear in mind that if this is in the local paper, the Register Guard, they would write the title knowing everyone locally getting the paper already knows Eugene is the first name of Eugene Skinner, the city's founder, and that you would have to live under a rock here not to know the late author Ken Kesey, and that there is a statue of him at Willamette and Broadway. In the case of the title of that piece you are in crisis here over, it was unclear what the editor or reporter meant to a national forum. So I clearly expounded on it sticking with exactly what was mentioned that happened in the article. I have been doing this 15 years Sand. I bracket what is mine in the manner that is accepted practice when posting local pieces in a national forum. You have changed. You are now pro religious piousness and even fundamentalism.
