NEW YORK -- Chief Financial Officer Anthony Noto is leaving the NFL after two years to return to Goldman Sachs.

The league said Monday that Eric Grubman will oversee the finance group at least until the end of collective bargaining negotiations with the NFL Players Association. Grubman is executive vice president of business operations and led the league's finance operations when he joined the NFL in 2004.

Noto will leave Oct. 4 to serve as a partner in Goldman Sachs' investment banking division and co-head of the firm's Global Media Group. He also held the title of executive vice president of finance with the NFL.

Grubman is also a Goldman Sachs alum. In his 14 years there, he led the firm's sports business and played a major role in negotiating the sales of several NFL teams.

What does Goldman Sachs have to do with the NFL?

I know someone who knows Noto and this is a puzzle to me.

NFL Franchises are bought and sold out of deals put together by the corporate syndicate desks of Wall Street firms. NFL is a multi-billion dollar enterprise. Go to any major sprts venue in NYC and you'll see that these firms own most of the luxury boxes and prime seat licenses.

But when a CFO abruptly leaves, you start looking for the smoke.

Jerry Jones implies that there won't be a season next year.

No surprise.

Notes on the NFLPA decertification proposal. The NFLPA Dir. DeMaurice Smith has asked the players to give him the authority to decertify the union. According to The Sports Business Journal, one team has already voted in favor of the proposal. The theory is that if the union decertifies and becomes a "trade association" the NFL could not lock the players out when the CBA expires. The move would also allow the association to sue the NFL for an illegal boycott if the players were locked out. Look for the Union to decertify before the expiration of the CBA. That prevents a mandatory 6 month waiting period before they could sue. Analysis: If the union does decertify the 2011 season will be on life support. The chances of a court in normal times not seeing the decertification as a union legal trick would be slim. But the courts are filled with liberals that will favor the union if at all possible. This would not be the first time that a player union decertified. After the players lost the strike in 1987, the union decertified and sued the NFL to gain free agency. The association formerly known as the NFLPA won the case and recertified as a union to negotiate a new CBA. The question is will that trick work a second time?
