WASHINGTON — A Republican senator is threatening to hold up food safety legislation that would give the Food and Drug Administration more power to prevent outbreaks, saying Democrats must find a way to pay for it.

The GOP spent $1trliion on a war that has done nothing but turn the world against us..they were never worried about paying for that.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush would veto any bill drafted by House Democratic leaders that would fund the Iraq war only into summer, his spokesman said Wednesday, even as the Pentagon held out hope that troops could begin withdrawing if the Iraqi government makes progress by fall.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates told a Senate committee that if violence in Iraq declines enough to allow the government to move forward, including steps toward political reconciliation, the U.S. could begin pulling troops out. . . .

Gates also told the panel that proposals for a short-term funding bill would be very disruptive and “have a huge impact” on contracts to repair and replace equipment. The Defense Department, he said, just doesn’t “have the agility to manage a two month appropriation.”

“I essentially have 10,000 faucets all running money,” Gates said. “Turning them on and off with precision and on a day-to-day basis, or even a month-to- month basis, gets very difficult.” And, he said that if Congress votes again in July, but rejects the funding bill, “I would have to shut down significant elements of the Department of Defense in August and September because I wouldn’t have the money to pay salaries.”

He's jumping the gun a bit, isn't he? He's supposed to wait until the Republicans take over to say that.

Sure, this is a food "safety" bill just like the "stimulus" was a "jobs bill".

The charade is over.

It takes Europe and Japan a fraction of the time it takes Americans to approve new drugs. There are helpful drugs on the market in Europe and Japan that have been outlawed in the U.S.

Is there a big difference in the number people who die from drug side effects in the U.S., Europe, and Japan???

NOPE.

We waste time and money for no reason.

I've been to 26 counties. I've been to many of those countries 5, 10, 20 or more times. In some respects, America is still the greatest country in the world. In other respects, America is the most screwed up country in the entire world.

We wouldn't have contaminated food if they didn't have illegal third-world types processing food. Look at where most of the produce is grown anymore; Chile, Mexico, Central America. You import the turd-world here by the thousands, you're going to get the standards they grew up with.

Well, [war's] got to do something for attention, his multiple personalities aren't speaking to him any more, and his imaginary friends keep finding excuses not to come over. (Murron)

Many people didn't. That's why we have an FDA.

I gotta love republican thinking. Fighting a war install social welfare states in countries of people they hate is small government. Regulating food safety is totally unnecessary bureaucracy

Complete horse shit.

Leftist power mongers site small statics, out of context, to create problems where there are none. They do this to gain power for themselves.

The fact is that the FDA does more harm than good because it drives up the costs of bringing life saving medicines to market and it also prohibits life saving medicines from entering the market that are on the market in Europe and Japan. The Europeans and Japanese DO NOT die more frequently from bad drugs than Americans. We waste time and money for no reason.

The U.S. has the most screwed up government in the entire developed world. It's time that change.

A more modern education than 1906 when the Jungle was written, including numerous trips to more than 25 countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Dude, you are living in the past. Put the joint down, clear the smoke, and take a look at reality.

The stimulus bill was exactly that. Designed to stimulate economic activity. A jobs bill is a micro bill. A stimulus is a macro bill.

Maybe you SHOULD have gone to public school. Those tutors taught you dick.

The Jungle explains the reasons the FDA was created. Which is why I asked after someone said there was no reason for the FDA. There absolutely was. The only reason we are living in the past in re: to food safety is because of the FDA.

Furthermore with tainted food from Mexico and China, that need still exists.

Visiting the world isn't an education it's a holiday.

And it was a miserable failure. The only thing it "stimulated" were the salivary glans of power hungry politicians and government bureaucrats.

the FDA

You don't think that the Europeans and Japanese regulate food and drugs too?

Of course they do.

They also have life saving drugs on the market that the United States has outlawed.

There are NOT higher death rates from bad food and drugs in Europe and Japan than there are in the U.S.

The U.S. government is run by blithering idiots at the behest of extremist cranks, all of who are scared to death of trail lawyers.

That's the problem in a nutshell.

Growth has turned positive...we are no longer bleeding jobs...all incipient evidence puts to a) we've at worst troughed or b) turned slightly upward and that c) both the stim and the bailouts worked.

So, why not tell me - with you vast store of internationally attained knowledge - what you believe should ahve been done in Jan and Feb of last year and what the results today would have been.

In other words, buck up. Let's hear YOUR plan as of 1/09.

Not wanting to sound cynical or anything, but maybe if the FDA were privatized the GOP would feel better about spending the money.

we are no longer bleeding jobs

465,000 new jobless claims last week is not bleeding jobs?

As I've been saying, the three month long "recovery" was over in July.

Next year will be much worse unless 3 things happen: A.) the GOP gains control of Congress, B.) the GOP has actually learned their lesson and embarks on a program of spending cuts and tax simplification, and C.) Obama goes along to save his Presidency.

Otherwise, we're screwed.
