Saudi Diplomat Seeking Asylum: 'My life Is In Danger'

Envoy says he fears persecution if he leaves the U.S. and returns home

A ranking Saudi diplomat told NBC News that he has asked for political asylum in the United States, saying he fears for his life if he is forced to return to his native country.

The diplomat, Ali Ahmad Asseri, the first secretary of the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles, has informed U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials that Saudi officials have refused to renew his diplomatic passport and effectively terminated his job after discovering he was gay and was close friends with a Jewish woman.

In a recent letter that he posted on a Saudi website, Asseri angrily criticized his country’s “backwardness” as well as the role of “militant imams” in Saudi society who have “defaced the tolerance of Islam.” Perhaps most provocatively of all, he has threatened to expose what he describes as politically embarrassing information about members of the Saudi royal family living in luxury in the U.S.

If he is forced to go back to Saudi Arabia — as Saudi officials are demanding — Asseri says he could face political persecution and even death.

“My life is in a great danger here and if I go back to Saudi Arabia, they will kill me openly in broad daylight,” Asseri said Saturday in an email to NBC.

In a recent interview, Asseri and his lawyer said that the Saudi diplomat was questioned by a Department of Homeland Security official in Los Angeles on Aug. 30 after formally applying for asylum on the grounds that he is a member of a “particular social group” — gays — that would subject him to persecution if he returns to his home country.

Officials at DHS in Washington as well as the Saudi Embassy in Washington and the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles did not respond to requests for comment.

It has to be al-Qaida after him, Islamic muzlims wouldn't make threats, or harm him, they are not the enemy... obama said so~

"The overwhelming majority of Muslims around the world are peace-loving people. They include millions of our fellow citizens in this country who are our friends, neighbors and co-workers and attend school with our children. What would it say if we start acting as if their religion is somehow offensive." It's important to be clear on who the enemy is — al-Qaida and extremists, not Islam or the majority of Muslims." ~ Obama; 9/11/2010

If skip had just looked at the date on the bible burning, he'd have seen it was 2009, under Obama...but he's like some infantile idiot, repeating himself.

Skip is correct it happened under Bush. mininggold or lucysmom taught me that. But it was revealed when Obama was president.

Officials Reject Allegations of Proselytizing in Afghanistan

By Jim Garamone American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, May 4, 2009 – A report broadcast by the Arab news network Al Jazeera about U.S. servicemembers proselytizing in Afghanistan is just plain wrong, Pentagon officials said today.

The Al Jazeera story showed an evangelical religious service on Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan and a discussion about distributing Bibles that had been translated into Dari and Pashtu – the two major languages of Afghanistan.

“American servicemembers are allowed to hold religious services,” a Defense Department official speaking on background said. “The clip shows one of those services with an American chaplain leading a religious service for American servicemembers. In it, he spoke generically about the evangelical faith. That’s all there was to it.”

The chaplain did not urge servicemembers to go among the Afghan people and attempt to gain converts to Christianity, the official said.

In the second instance, a young sergeant received a shipment of Bibles translated into Dari and Pashtu from his church in the United States. The film showed a discussion about the Bibles. “What it did not show was the chaplain counseling the young sergeant that distributing the Bibles was against U.S. Central Command’s General Order No. 1,” the official said. The chaplain confiscated the Bibles. “As far as we know, none ever got off base.”

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Navy Adm. Mike Mullen was asked about the incident – which happened in May 2008 – during a Pentagon news conference today. “It certainly is – from the United States military’s perspective – not our position to ever push any specific kind of religion, period,” Mullen said.

There is no indication disciplinary action was taken against the young servicemember. “The counseling sufficed,” the official said.

General Order No. 1 specifically forbids “proselytizing of any faith, religion or practice.”

Stone, the Military can make their own rules if command determines it has to to maintain order, discipline and accomplish the various missions at hand.

The link above is on the prohibition of abortion in the military. The military is no democracy.

They have prohibited religious salesmanship over there, much as they have ordered women serving in Saudi Arabia to wear Muslim grade clothing there and won't let them drive.

IF they determine a right you have here gets in the way of accomplishing the mission, you lose it. It has always been that way.

In the Military, one falls under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, (UCMJ).

I was tried in a Special Court Martial a Fort Bragg in 1977 and won. I spent a buttload of time studying this issue.

IF you pass out Bibles and witness in a war theater against expressed orders from command, you are in deep trouble.

Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ)

ART. 92. FAILURE TO OBEY ORDER OR REGULATION

Any person subject to this chapter who--

(1) violates or fails to obey any lawful general order or regulation;

(2) having knowledge of any other lawful order issued by any member of the armed forces, which it is his duty to obey, fails to obey the order; or

(3) is derelict in the performance of his duties;

shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

"When he has time off is he prohibited from talking about his religion or sharing it with others? For about the fifth time is the military bound by the constitution when deployed overseas? Do soldiers lose their rights when deployed overseas? Why are you so afraid to answer that question?"

Very much prohibited there. Command can give orders that troops can not talk about their religion to civilians if they determine it endangers lives, public order, or the mission at hand.

They cannot prevent troops from praying or worshiping privately. But if you are ordered never to mention the topic to a civilian there and do, you are violating a direct order from a superior commissioned officer.

You would be punished, and the person in trouble has no remedy to appeal this under the auspices of the U.S. Constitution.

That has always been how our military works. The UCMJ is the latest version of military law, and was put in place in the 1950s.

Spreading Bibles with the cover story of giving gifts is against the directives of the Command structure. In recent years, the most fervent Christians have chafed against the orders not to "hunt bodies for Jesus".

I have run into these people in the military and found them to be arrogant and highly disrespectful. They seem to feel that they have a higher calling to spread the Gospel then the doctrine and directives of the command structure which seeks to maintain good relationship between civilian populations and provide a safe environment that does not have unnecessary complications toward the end of achieving the mission.

If these people feel so strongly about this, they can get out of the military and go over there themselves and do what they want.

I have seen one NCO who was cadre at the Special Forces Qualification Course removed from his slot for insulting Muslim officers who were guests of the United States and allowed to take the course.

This will no doubt continue to be a controversy. But historically, the command structure of the military gets it's way, and this is a good thing. They are the ones most concerned about health and welfare in a theater of operations.

And it was the Pentagon and Sec, of Defense Gates who are most responsible for these policies and doctrine. President Obama has eventually followed their lead on this. He is not the instigator of thee policies.

Like Marvin Bush's maid:

The Fairfax police public statement on the death made no reference to Marvin Bush, his address, or the videotape of the deceased employee with President Bush:

"A 62-year-old Alexandria area woman died after being pinned between a rolling car and a building. The crash happened on Monday, around 9 pm, near the intersection of Fort Hunt Road and Edgehill Drive. Bertha Champagne had gone outside to get something from a car in a driveway. The car, which was left in gear, began to roll forward. Champagne was pinned between the car and a small building next to the driveway. The car continued to roll down the driveway, crossed Fort Hunt Road, and came to rest in a wooded area. Champagne was taken to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital where she was pronounced dead."

In fact, an attempt by this editor to obtain the police report in 2003 was unsuccessful, the Fairfax police public affairs officer claiming that it was only releasable to the "Accident Reconstruction Team."

Meeting 3 U.S. officers who are angered by the special relationship

by Philip Weiss on September 10, 2010 · 167 comments Like 39 5 Retweet

I often look around the political rabbithole I went down a few years ago and wonder what I’m doing here and whether I’ll ever get out. I think of all the associations and even interests I had earlier in life that I’ve cut myself off from. I wonder if I'm not bonkers or if I’ve had a temperamental breakdown in midlife that unsuited me for the world. Though generally I end up saying, What the hell, my wife’s ok with it, I’ve got a good life, you gotta do what you gotta do.

In the last couple days I’ve had conversations with three American military officers in Jordan that left me feeling good about my choice. In each case it was the officers who brought up the tremendous strategic liability that Israel represents for the U.S., and two of them used the words “Jewish lobby” without prompting.

I’m not going to give away details because these were two chance meetings; the individuals had no idea what use I’d make of their comments. All three work in the Arab world. One is retired, the other two were passing through. Now let me tell you what they said.

And historically the Marines were formed because Britain had a Navy that would force Americans to join by seizing them from American merchant vessels. And the Army was in charge of the focus of destruction and conquest of the people who's land we stole and call our own.

Obama is no more illegal then the entire setup of the USA is, Stone. The policies you don't like here are not anything more then a tactical move to enhance military operations.

Many of the generals and admirals making policies like this are very religious, but take a 'there is a time and a place for this' attitude on Bible thumping.

And as they are very good military planners, and this policy is very well thought out and defensible, you would never get any traction trying to change it.
