The Tea Party: Same Old Authoritarian Conservatives With a New Label [Full Thread]

The debt-ceiling debate, better described as an extortion ploy by the Tea Party-controlled Republicans of the U.S House of Representatives, has raised a question: Who, exactly, are these largely anonymous troublemakers? When I did a little digging, I realized that I know these people all too well. Indeed, I had actually written about them before they morphed into their current form. They are, in fact, both old and new authoritarian conservatives. These authoritarians are a notoriously nasty crew. If you have not noticed, they are delighted with what is happening in Washington, the chaos they have created. Actually, they are thrilled that they have been able to turn the Nation’s ...

Gallup: Perry would start in second

Gallup is out with a national poll testing a number of possible late entries into the GOP primary. The survey is encouraging for Rick Perry, who would begin with 18 percent of the vote and trail Mitt Romney by 5 percentage points. Michele Bachmann would be in third place with 13 percent, followed by Ron Paul with 10 percent. The survey finds that if either Sarah Palin or Rudy Giuliani entered the race, they'd fare a bit worse than Perry, taking 15 and 14 percent, respectively. If all three got into the race, it would be a free-for-all, with Romney at 17 percent, Perry at 15 percent, Palin at 12 percent and Giuliani and Bachmann tied at 11 percent. It's extremely unlikely that ...

Palin to Keynote Tea Party Rally in Iowa (Maverick II, an unconventional approach)

In the latest indication that her sights are still set on a presidential run, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has accepted an invitation to keynote a Tea Party rally in Waukee, Iowa, on Sept. 3, RealClearPolitics has learned. The Labor Day weekend visit to the nation's first voting state comes after Palin indicated during an appearance on Fox News earlier this month that she would make her decision about whether to launch a campaign in August or September. All signs now point to September as the month when Palin would throw her hat into the ring, as logistical concerns ranging from fundraising to getting her name on the ballot in various states would likely preclude further delay. Many ...

Treasury to lay out post Aug 2 plan soon if no debt deal

The U.S. Treasury will lay out a plan in the next few days about how the government will run if it appears Congress might not meet an August 2 deadline to raise the debt ceiling, U.S. officials said on Wednesday. Republican and Democratic lawmakers are rushing to rework competing plans to lift the $14.3 trillion debt limit and cut the deficit as time runs out ahead of August 2. "Treasury will provide more information as we get closer to August 2 regarding how the government would operate without new borrowing authority if the debt limit is not increased," said a Treasury official, speaking on the condition of anonymity. White House press secretary Jay Carney separately told ...

'Hedge Fund Cantor' And Ron Paul Should Not Both Be Republicans

'Hedge Fund Cantor' And Ron Paul Should Not Both Be Republicans Gary Anderson Gary Anderson can be found at http://strategicdefaultbooks.com Katya Wachtel has a great article on BI today about the real Eric Cantor. He is a shill for the hedge funds which of course, make up the backbone of the easy money revolution. Shadow banks are backed by hedge funds and they offer you too much house with the absence of underwriting. They offered so many easy money loans that they were able to drive the price of houses up by the force of the loans themselves. Cantor and Ryan are Tea Party candidates. Make a mental note of that. Cantor and Ryan want the rich, and therefore the hedge funds, to ...

FAA shutdown puts Bay Area airport work in holding pattern

About 60 employees of Devcon Construction were set to show up at Oakland International Airport on Monday to continue working on the airport's brand-new air traffic control tower. That is, until they were told not to, until further notice. "We were informed Friday to stop all construction activity," said Dan Anello, a project manager at the Milpitas-based company. That was when, the House, in its infinite wisdom, refused to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration's operating authority, resulting in the partial shutdown of the agency, the halting of funds for dozens of similar projects nationwide, and further additions to the nation's unemployment rolls. ...

Obama the Bore

President Obama is going to lose his bid for re-election. Not just because of the anemic recovery, stubborn unemployment, runaway spending, staggering deficits, lack of public faith in his ability as commander-in-chief, his hostility towards Israel's government, the rise of the Tea Party, or the Republican-favoring implications of redistricting on the electoral map. Those are all factors, and the coming months will provide endless columns discussing each. (Of this I am sure, for I intend to write some of them.) But there is a more fundamental reason he'll lose: Barack Obama, once perceived as extraordinary, now just seems extra-ordinary. He has gotten politically boring. And ...

Obama Fights Full-Tilt Tea Party Crazy

I intended to write about President Obama's prime-time address on the debt ceiling, but House Speaker John Boehner's performance turned out to be the big news. Last seen Friday evening complaining that the president added new last-minute conditions in their debt-ceiling negotiations, Boehner now seems to have no memory of those negotiations, which by both parties' account left them about $400 billion apart. That's not chump change, but against the backdrop of an attempted $4 trillion deal, it didn't have to be a deal-breaker either. But if you listened to Boehner Monday night, you'd think he and Obama never discussed a deal. In fact you'd believe the president ...

Paul Gets Big Endorsement Ahead Of Crucial Iowa Contest

Ames, Iowa (CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has fresh bragging rights after picking up what is surely a coveted endorsement on Monday. Cory Adams - the Republican chairman of Story County in Iowa – endorsed the Texas congressman's presidential bid at a campaign event in Ames, Iowa. That's significant for a few reasons. Ames is the largest city in Story County, home to over 50,000 residents. And it is in this city that a widely-watched showdown between the GOP presidential candidates will play out on August 13. The Ames Straw Poll will test the candidates' popularity and could be a sign of their electability. Having the endorsement of such an ...

GOP Sen: Rewrite Constitution Or We'll Force The U.S. To Default

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews Monday that he is giving Congress ten days to pass a constitutional amendment that would make raising taxes nearly impossible. And if he doesn’t get what he wants, he will do everything in his power to force the U.S. to default on its debts. “Okay, in ten days you want to change the United States Constitution by two-thirds vote in both houses?” Matthews asked. “That’s what you’re demanding.” “Yes,” Lee admitted. “If possible we can’t change the Constitution just in Congress but we can submit it to the states. Let the states fight it out.” “You want the Democratic Senate, by ...

Republican Leaders Voted for Drivers of U.S. Debt They Now Blame on Obama

House Speaker John Boehner often attacks the spendthrift ways of Washington. “In Washington, more spending and more debt is business as usual,” the Republican leader from Ohio said in a televised address yesterday amid debate over the U.S. debt. “I’ve got news for Washington - those days are over.” Yet the speaker, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell all voted for major drivers of the nation’s debt during the past decade: Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts and Medicare prescription drug benefits. They also voted for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, ...

New polls confirm Obama's Democratic base crumbles

With all of the spotlights on the high-stakes debt maneuverings by President Obama and Speaker John Boehner the last few days, few people noticed what Vermont's Sen. Bernie Sanders said: "I think it would be a good idea if President Obama faced some primary opposition." This is political treason 469 days before a presidential election. Yes, yes, this is just a crusty old New England independent for now, albeit one who caucuses loyally with Harry Reid's Democratic posse. But while most of the media focuses on Republican Boehner and the tea party pressures on him to raise the debt limit not one Liberty dime, Sanders' mumblings are a useful reminder that hidden in the ...

Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) hasn't officially started a campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, but he's already making an impact in national polls of primary voters. Now he's leading in the latest survey of likely Republican primary voters in the critical swing state of Florida. Perry took the pole position in Florida with 16% of the vote in the latest American Research Group (ARG) poll, followed closely by the candidate who held the lead the last time ARG polled the state: former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney. Romney held a commanding lead in the same poll in May, garnering 26% of the vote, almost twice as much as the second place finisher, former Ark. Gov. Mike Huckabee. ...

Trump To GOP: Force U.S. Default To Make Sure Obama Isn’t Re-Elected

Conservative real estate titan Donald Trump told Fox News Monday that Republicans should make sure President Barack Obama isn’t re-elected by refusing any comprehensive deal to raise the debt ceiling, even going so far as to suggest that the country should be allowed to default on its debts. “Obama doesn’t want the six-month extension because that almost ensures he doesn’t get re-elected,” Trump told Fox & Friends hosts Steve Doocy, Gretchen Carlson and Brian Kilmeade. “I think, frankly, the Republicans would be crazy, unless they get 100 percent of the deal that they want right now, to make any deal.” “The fact is that unless Republicans get 100 ...

‘Crazy’ Freshman Finds His Tea Party Stance on Debt Makes Backers Nervous

Illinois Representative Joe Walsh rode a wave of economic anxiety to an upset win last November. Now, he’s trying not to get pulled under as voters concerned about a debt default turn a skeptical eye toward his service. At a July 22 town hall meeting in a community center gym just north of Chicago in Lindenhurst, the freshman Republican paced the room as he told the crowd of about 80 constituents that President Barack Obama has mishandled the economy and overstated the repercussions of a default on the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt. Not everyone was buying it. “I disagree with you,” said Tom Weber, a Walsh supporter who watched his construction business decline during ...

The NYT is Wrong: Officials Do Not Say That Medicare Is Not Sustainable In Its Current Form [Full Thread]

That is what Republicans say. Officials, like the Medicare Trustees, say that the program faces a modest shortfall over its 75-year planning horizon. The projected shortfall is around 0.3 percent of GDP or less than one-fifth of the amount that we increased annual military spending since September 11th. The projected Medicare shortfall is down by more than 75 percent from when President Obama took office due to the cost controls put in place in the health care reform bill. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) calculates that the Medicare system in its current form is far more efficient than the privatized system advocated by Republicans. CBO's projections imply that switching ...

Durbin To GOP: 'You Break It, You Own It’

By Alicia M. Cohn - 07/24/11 12:18 PM ET The second most powerful Democrat in the Senate warned Republicans Sunday that they are toying with a fragile economy and would take the blame for any fallout from a debt default. On Sunday, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said he had six words of warning for House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio): “If you break it, you own it.” Republicans and the White House have argued the case that the president “owns” the economy, along with its recovery. Durbin slammed Boehner for calling off debt-ceiling negotiations with the White House on Friday. “The president negotiated with you in good faith,” Durbin said he would ...

Tea Party Congressman: Raising Debt Ceiling IS Compromise

Freshman Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) explained to the "Meet the Press" roundtable that Congress agreeing to a raise in the debt ceiling is a compromise in and of itself and that the Administration's side of the compromise needs to be a reduction of spending. "Like I said, truly, there is a feeling in my caucus, and in me specifically, I can say, that I feel we are willing to compromise by coming to the table and saying we understand we'll have to raise the debt limit specifically, but we have to get ourselves on a fiscal trajectory, because look, we've spent too much money. We have the same tax rates, the same two wars, the same prescription drug ...

GOP Makes Big Gains among White Voters (Especially among the Young and Poor)

As the country enters into the 2012 presidential election cycle, the electorate's partisan affiliations have shifted significantly since Obama won office nearly three years ago. In particular, the Democrats hold a much narrower edge than they did in 2008, particularly when the partisan leanings of independents are taken into account. Notably, the GOP gains have occurred only among white voters; a two-point Republican edge among whites in 2008 (46% to 44%) has widened to a 13-point lead today (52% to 39%). In sharp contrast, the partisan attachments of black and Hispanic voters have remained consistently Democratic. While Republican gains in leaned party identification span nearly all ...

Jeb Bush, who has made clear he isn't running for president this cycle, raised some eyebrows on Sean Hannity's Fox News show Friday night with this comment about a potential campaign: "I don’t anticipate that. You never say never. This is a standard answer that I’ve kind of learned how to give which is — you never say never, but I never rule out being on Dancing with the Stars either … there are a lot of ways you can make a difference." He went on, with respect to whether any of the current field can win, "If you recall, my dad in 1992 had an approval rating that was double what President Obama has right now and he was running against the seven ...

Congressman Ron Paul may be a long shot to win the Republican presidential nomination, but he runs competitively with President Obama right now. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows Paul picking up 37% of the vote, while the president earns 41%. The Texas congressman joins Mitt Romney, Michelle Bachmann, and Rick Perry as candidates within hailing distance of the president at this time. Rudy Giuliani is another potential candidate who is considered a long shot for the nomination but is competitive with the president. The former mayor of New York City trails Obama by five, 44% to 39%. But the real story in the numbers is that the president ...

Senate Votes To Kill House GOP's 'Cut, Cap And Balance' Measure

The Senate voted 51-46, along strict party-lines, on Friday to kill the House Republicans' "cut, cap and balance" legislation. The measure would have cut spending by $111 billion in 2012, capped spending over the next decade and prohibited more borrowing until Congress had passed a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution. President Obama had threatened to veto the bill, which was dead on arrival in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) called the legislation "very, very bad" and said it was a waste of the upper chamber's time. Moving the measure through the House and holding a vote in the Senate, however, was seen as a way of making ...

Reagan’s Tax Increases Have Democrats Recalling Republican Hero

Democrats are claiming an unlikely ally in this year’s fight over the debt limit: Ronald Reagan. Reagan, renowned by Republicans as a tax-cutter, also increased revenue about a dozen times when confronted with surging deficits. The Treasury Department has estimated those measures would be the equivalent of $300 billion annually today -- more than what many Democrats are now seeking as part of a deal to raise the U.S. debt ceiling. That often-forgotten history has some lawmakers trading places, with Democrats hailing the former Republican president as an example for today’s budget negotiators. “He’s a guy who was willing to compromise,” said Representative Chris ...
