Herman's Weekly Commentary: "Mr. President, You’re Fired" Post Date: 2011-08-23 09:27:08 by Happy Quanzaa

Published: Sunday, August 21, 2011 Having served on the Board of Directors of several major corporations over the last twenty years, I have had the responsibility of voting to hire a new CEO, and voting to fire a current CEO many times. In both instances the decision was based on assessed potential and performance. Directors hold CEOs responsible for results, and the prudent use of company resources such as cash, equity and human resources. Specific metrics are established for both annual and multi-year performance, which are evaluated in making the hire or fire decision. If a CEO is underperforming and on the brink of being fired, then we look to see if he or she has identified the ...
It’s A Myth That 47% Of Americans Pay No Taxes, In Truth 86% Pay Taxes Post Date: 2011-08-22 18:05:59 by lucysmom

snip The truth is that the talking point that half of all Americans pay no taxes is a misrepresentation. Here is the full quote from the Tax Policy Center, The fraction of tax units paying no income tax varies widely by filing status and type of unit. About 47 percent of single filers will owe no tax, compared with 38 percent of joint filers and 72 percent of heads of household. More than half of elderly tax units and tax units with children will pay no income tax this year. The 47% statistic is not all Americans pay no taxes, but single filers who will pay no federal income taxes. According to the Center On Budget and Policy Priorities the real reason why 47%-51% of Americans paid no ...

Bachmann: Americans Fear ‘The Rise Of The Soviet Union’ Post Date: 2011-08-18 15:15:53 by Brian S

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said Thursday that Americans are alarmed that President Barack Obama may cut defense spending at a time when the Soviet Union is becoming a power in the world. When you are traveling I know you are in South Carolina now, youre obviously in Iowa, youre up in New Hampshire are you hearing different things in these states? Christian radio host Jay Sekulow asked the candidate. I would say its a unified message, Bachmann explained. It really is about jobs and the economy. That doesnt mean people havent [sic] forgotten about protecting life and marriage and the sanctity of ...
Ohio Governor Pleads With Foes To Save Him Post Date: 2011-08-18 14:03:16 by Brian S

Wow. This is quite a climbdown for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, as reported by the Columbus Dispatch: Gov. John Kasich pleaded with organized labor leaders today to compromise on Senate Bill 5 and cancel a fall referendum on the controversial bill that peels back public employee collective bargaining rights. Kasich said avoiding a fight over state Issue 2 is in best interest of everyone, including public employee unions. He asked the unions to set aside political agendas and past offenses. But We Are Ohio, the coalition that is leading the effort to overturn the collective bargaining law, reacted negatively almost immediately. They can repeal the entire bill or join ...
Palin Reveals Her Opportunistic Streak Post Date: 2011-08-18 12:03:13 by Skip Intro

Former Gov. Sarah Palin is playing hide and seek with the media. Will she run for office? Will she vie for the presidency in 2012? Rather than stating her intentions, she is deliberately flirting with the media, indicating she may jump in at any timeor perhaps not. This strategy is tarnishing her image: Again, she appears to be more interested in bolstering her celebrity status rather than being a serious political figure and doing what is best for the nation. Mrs. Palin has failed to give a very good reason as to what is taking so long for her to make up her mind. Recently, when Fox News host Sean Hannity asked her whether she would seek the Republican nomination, she said she ...

Rick Perrys Texas is Ross Perots Mexico come north. Through a range of enticements we more commonly associate with Third World nations low wages, no benefits, high rates of poverty, scant taxes, few regulations and generous corporate subsidies the state has produced its own giant sucking sound, attracting businesses from other states to a place where workers come cheap. Perrys calling card in the presidential race is his states record of job creation at a time when the national economy floundered. Yes, Texas has created lots of jobs, though thats partly a reflection of the surge in oil prices, which in turn created tens of thousands ...
White House Paints Gop Field With Tea Party Brush Post Date: 2011-08-17 12:19:07 by Brian S

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The rising profiles of Republican presidential candidates Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann are giving the White House a new opening: linking the entire GOP field to the tea party, whose popularity has recently sagged. If the strategy works, it could cause guilt-by-association problems even for non-tea-party Republicans like Mitt Romney. That might be a lot to ask, however. Unflattering comparisons are a well-worn campaign tactic, and many Americans have only a hazy notion of the tea party movement. Still, President Barack Obama's top aides are giving it a go. Republican candidates must decide whether to "swear allegiance to the tea party" or work with ...
Democrats Hold Seats In Wisconsin Recall Elections Post Date: 2011-08-17 11:40:13 by Brian S

RHINELANDER, Wis (Reuters) - Two Wisconsin Democratic state senators beat back Republican challengers on Tuesday in the last of a series of recall elections triggered by a fight over collective bargaining rights for public sector workers. Both Democrats and Republicans were claiming victory on Tuesday in a series of nine summer recall votes in which Democrats unseated two incumbent Republicans but fell short of winning control of the state legislature. Democrats had hoped to win a majority in the state senate following a fierce battle with Governor Scott Walker and his Republican allies earlier this year over public workers' union powers that involved mass protests, legislative ...

I first became a conservative by listening to Rush Limbaugh as a teenager, a habit I picked up from my mother. Those were exciting times, and I remember Limbaugh, the fiery outsider, supporting renegade Republican Pat Buchanan and his presidential challenge to incumbent George H.W. Bush in 1992. Four years later, I supported Buchanans 1996 presidential campaign, which Rush would have no part of, and as the years went by I would continue to support conservatives who challenged the status quo while my one-time radio hero seemed to become more comfortable with it. For the next decade I spent my time looking for the next Buchanan, while Rush would reflexively defend George W. Bush ...
Norquist Won't Oppose Extension of U.S. Gasoline, Diesel Taxes Post Date: 2011-08-16 18:27:26 by lucysmom

Aug. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist said he won't oppose an extension of U.S. gasoline and diesel- fuel taxes set to expire Sept. 30, as he pushes for broader transportation-funding overhaul. Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, said today that an extension with no changes wouldn't violate a pledge signed by many congressional lawmakers not to raise taxes. That may allow Republicans to agree to extend surface transportation funding and authority to collect the gasoline tax. The Federal Aviation Administration last month temporarily lost its authority to collect airline ticket taxes when Congress couldn't agree on an extension bill for that ...
Rick Perry campaign not disavowing implied threat to Bernanke Post Date: 2011-08-16 13:47:38 by Skip Intro

I asked Rick Perrys spokesman if the campaign is offering clarification of his widely discussed suggestion yesterday that Texas would offer some real ugly frontier justice to Fed chairman Ben Bernanke if he were to print money between now and election day. The spokesman, Mark Miner, emailed me this: The Governor was expressing his frustration with the current economic situation and the out of control spending that persists in Washington. Most Americans would agree that spending more money is not the answer to the economic issues facing the country. The important thing here is that this is the Perry camps official considered response and he is not ...

To some conservative Jews, Texas Gov. Rick Perry would make an excellent presidential candidate. Hes been to Israel more than any other candidate in the field and has said he loves it. And Perry creates jobs. But other Jewish conservatives seeking the anti-Obama candidate look at the three-term governor and see something arresting: He believes hes on a mission from God. Perry has nonplussed longtime Jewish supporters by claiming that he has been called to the presidency and by hosting a prayer rally this month that appealed to Jesus to save America. Jennifer Rubin, the Washington Posts Right Turn columnist and a bellwether of Jewish conservatism, took ...

I will go on record and predict he will indeed. Mr. Obama will not win another term unless we have some economic fairy waive her magic wand and change the world in a short 16 months. He is weak and worn out. Behind the scenes, his presidency is in chaos and in a few short months, he has another budget cutting battle that will cause him to lose all around. He will try to act like he knows what he is doing, but the majority of America for the first time is not buying. Think back of ...

President Obama Begins Political Counteroffensive This Week Post Date: 2011-08-14 18:35:46 by Brian S

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama launches a political counteroffensive this week, weighed down by a stunted economy, wilting support among some of his most ardent backers, and a daily bashing from the slew of Republicans campaigning for his job. "We've still got a long way to go to get to where we need to be. We didn't get into this mess overnight, and it's going to take time to get out of it," the president told the country over the weekend, all but pleading for people to stick with him. A deeply unsettled political landscape, with voters in a fiercely anti-incumbent mood, is framing the 2012 presidential race 15 months before Americans decide whether to ...

The latest entrant in the 2012 presidential race, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), will be able to turn to several on K Street as he vies for the White House. A number of former aides to Texan lawmakers and Lone Star State natives who are now prominent lobbyists in Washington plan to back Perry. Several of these GOP lobbyists have stayed on the sidelines of the Republican presidential primary as they waited for the Texas governors highly-anticipated late entry into the race for the White House. Dirk Van Dongen, president of the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors, one of Washingtons most well-known business groups, plans to get behind Perry as he begins his ...
Rick Perry's Ruthless Drive to Win Post Date: 2011-08-14 14:56:40 by Brian S

Rick Perry has called Social Security unconstitutional and presided over the execution of a man who was probably innocent. But as Paul Begala argues, thats just the beginning. Aug 13, 2011 11:51 AM EDT I first met Rick Perry in 1985. He was a Democratic freshman state rep, straight off the ranch in Haskell, Texas. He wore his jeans so tight, and, umm, adjusted himself so often that my fellow young legislative aides and I used to call him Crotch. Even among state representatives, even among Texas Aggies (graduates of this cute remedial school we have in Texas), Perry stood out for his modest intellectual gifts. Hell, he got a C in animal breeding. I have goats who got an A in that ...
Herman Cain Encouraged By 5th Place In Iowa Poll Post Date: 2011-08-14 13:30:21 by Brian S

(08-14) 08:33 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain says he got a lot for his money in Iowa's straw poll. Cain says his campaign for the Republican nomination spent nothing on ads for TV and radio and had just four buses to bring people to the Iowa State Fair to participate in the Saturday vote. The Georgia businessman ended up with 1,456 votes, or 9 percent of the votes. That was good enough for fifth place among 10 contenders. Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann won the poll with 29 percent. Cain tells CNN's "State of the Union" that his showing is encouraging and that his campaign's momentum is growing. He says he still ...
The Message From Iowa Post Date: 2011-08-13 21:45:39 by jwpegler

The short message from Iowa was: Tim who? Michelle Bachmann and Ron Paul were 152 votes apart. Each of them got more than twice as many votes as Tim Pawlenty even though he spent more money in Iowa than Bachmann and Paul combined. The challenge for Pawlenty is that he is too timid to survive the bare knuckle brawlers running the Obama campaign. Fortunately, the GOP primary voters know it. The deeper message was that the right candidates were not on the ballot. Rick Perry wasn't even a candidate and wasn't even listed on the ballot, yet he got more votes than Mitt Romney. Perry had a great announcement speech in South Carolina today. First, he hammered Obama with Obama's own ...

For those harboring hopes of Sarah Palin entering the race for 2012, your wishes may still come true. On Sean Hannitys show last night in Iowa, the former governor of Alaska was asked directly by the Fox commentator on the question some are still curious to know about her future. Palin did not hesitate to provide a straight answer. I am still considering a run for the President of the United States, she said, followed by a loud applause from the Ames crowd. Later on, Palin indicated her desire for Texas governor Rick Perry to enter the race, while getting into more details about her plans. Im still considering it, the impact on family is paramount, she ...

Ron Paul addresses the crowd in Ames. (Charles Dharapak/Associated Press) Texas Gov. Rick Perry got the national attention but Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Texas Rep. Ron Paul got more votes today at the Iowa straw poll. Paul finished a close second at the quadrennial fundraiser in Ames. The Lake Jackson congressman received 4,671 votes. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, an Iowa native, finished first with 4,823. Perry received 718 write-in votes, placing him sixth, just ahead of fellow no-show Mitt Romney. Michele Bachmann turned out her backers in Ames. Rick Perry may want to convince some of them to switch. (Charles Dharapak/Associated Press) The straw poll, which was overshadowed ...
Rick Perry "I Declare My Candidacy For President Of The United States" Post Date: 2011-08-13 17:44:58 by jwpegler

A couple of things: Like him or not, this is the best speech any 2012 GOP candidate as delivered to date. First, he hammers Obama with Obama's own words and deeds. Second, the speech was very focused on the economy and jobs. Third, the speech was very upbeat about America's potential. It was Reaganesque. People will respond to this. A big difference between Perry and Bush is that Perry wasn't born with a silver foot in his mouth. He was the son of a tenant farmer (someone who farms property owned by others). I really dislike privileged people in public office, whether its the Bush's, Kennedy's or anyone else.
The Congress Is In Session, It Turns Out … In Israel Post Date: 2011-08-12 12:26:28 by Brian S

This week's reports that 20 percent of the U.S. Congress will be visiting Israel this month are stunning. Eighty-one members of Congress -- two thirds of them Republicans, 47 of them freshmen -- apparently think it is more important to be visiting Israel than it is to be at home dealing with the worst economic crisis in modern memory. America's economy is in flames and these guys are taking lobbyist-funded trips to what, watch Israelis take to the streets to protest the high-cost of living in that country? This Jewish, Israel-supporting, foreign policy specialist says, "It's time to come home, ladies and gentlemen." While such visits are important and there is ...
