In new poll, Ron Paul rates with front-runners Romney and Perry
Post Date: 2011-09-09 16:22:35 by We The People

In yet another sign that perhaps the news media ought to think about treating his presidential campaign more seriously, Ron Paul was viewed about as favorably as Rick Perry and Mitt Romney by Americans in a new poll. In an Associated Press-GfK telephone survey of the general population, 37 percent of the respondents said they have a positive view of the libertarian-leaning representative from Texas, while 36 percent said they did not. Perry, the Texas governor, and Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, invoked similar favorable/unfavorable ratings that also fell within the poll's 4.1 percent margin of error. Romney was viewed favorably by 39 percent of Americans, and Perry was ...

“A watched kettle never boils.” A sage piece of advice for cooks or anyone waiting for something to come to fruition. Unfortunately for us, we seem to have applied that advice to ourselves and ceased watching the governmental cauldron that is Washington, D.C. Bad move – a very bad move. Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and Wendell Phillips have all reminded us, at one time or another, that “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” Would that we had listened better. Perhaps we would not presently be hurtling into the Keynesian abyss on a FED powered train from hell. This of course after having been groped (for our own safety) prior to forced boarding. However, we ...

The real debate: Watch the swing states, not the national polls (5 PDT, 8 EDT - Reagan Library)

Michele Bachmann: the liberals would love to see her compete in the swing states. Forget all the nonsense about who's leading in the various national polls. Start thinking about who could win the swing states. That's pollster Larry Sabato's analysis in the Wall Street Journal. Here's the key paragraph: "Republicans therefore are a lock or lead in 24 states for 206 electoral votes, and Democrats have or lead in 19 states for 247 electoral votes. That's why seven super-swing states with 85 electors will determine which party gets to the magic number of 270 electoral votes: Colorado (9), Florida (29), Iowa (6), Nevada (6), New Hampshire (4), Ohio (18) and Virginia ...

Perry Will Appear In Wednesday's GOP Presidential Debate

Texas Gov. Rick Perry will participate after all in Wednesday's presidential debate — the candidate's first. "He plans to be there," said Perry spokesman Mark Miner. Perry has been slotted to join the debate, held at the Reagan Presidential Library, but a series of severe Texas wildfires had forced him to skip campaign stops in New Hampshire and South Carolina over the weekend. When asked Tuesday morning by CBS whether he would still debate, Perry said, "I don't know." "That's a fluid situation at the moment, so again I go back to we're going to be taking care of the folks here," Perry said. The debate will be an important early ...

Obama Mulls Tax Cuts Beyond Republican Plans
Post Date: 2011-09-06 11:15:42 by Brian S

President Barack Obama may press Congress for tax cuts that would exceed his past proposals as well as some of the offerings from House Republicans to strengthen his hand in talks on measures to boost the U.S. economy, according to a person familiar with the discussions. With Obama set to lay out his plans in a Sept. 8 address to Congress, the administration is focusing on cuts targeted at middle-income Americans to spur consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of the economy, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. In a speech to a union crowd in Detroit yesterday, Obama said he would challenge Republicans on taxes. “You say ...

Gop Candidates In SC Vow To Carry Tea-Party Banner

(09-05) 16:21 PDT Columbia, S.C. (AP) -- Pledging fidelity to the Constitution and vowing to carry the tea party's priorities to the White House, the Republicans chasing the GOP's presidential nomination pitched themselves Monday to their party's libertarian activists as the strongest candidates to roll back four years of President Barack Obama's tenure. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said the Obama administration flouted the Constitution to push a political agenda. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota stridently called Obama's policies "unconstitutional" at the same tea party-backed forum on Labor Day. And Texas Gov. Rick Perry, the third member of his ...

Obama says GOP must back US first, create jobs
Post Date: 2011-09-05 15:56:18 by Sebastian

President Barack Obama said Monday that congressional Republicans must put their country ahead of their party and vote to create new jobs as he used a boisterous Labor Day rally to aim a partisan barb at the GOP. In a preview of the jobs speech he will deliver on Thursday to Congress, Obama said there are numerous roads and bridges that need rebuilding in the U.S., and over 1 million unemployed construction workers who are available to build them. Citing massive federal budget deficits, Republicans have expressed opposition to spending vast new sums on jobs programs. But Obama said that with widespread suffering, "the time for Washington games is over" and lawmakers must move ...

Tax Reform Simplify The Personal Income Tax Code And Lower Rates. Rather than nibble around the edges of the existing tax code, Gov. Huntsman will introduce a revenue- neutral tax plan that eliminates all deductions and credits in favor of three drastically lower rates of 8%, 14% and 23%. Eliminating deductions and credits in favor of lower marginal rates will yield a simpler and more efficient tax code, decreasing the burden on taxpayers. Eliminate The Alternative Minimum Tax. Under the new simplified plan, Gov. Huntsman will eliminate the Alternative Minimum Tax, which is not indexed for inflation and is penalizing an increasing number of families and small businesses. INDIANOLA, Iowa — Gov. Rick Perry is privately being coached to come across as more presidential — cautious in his comments, deliberate in defending his Texas record — while building on his fast start by trying to consolidate support across the Republican spectrum, from the Tea Party and evangelicals to the party establishment. Former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts is steeling for a long and combative fight for the Republican nomination, dropping his front-runner’s strategy and preparing to confront Mr. Perry on immigration, his quarter-century in government and his claims of creating jobs in Texas. Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota is working to shatter ...

U.S. Right-Wing and GOP Presidential Candidates Spreading Paranoid Anti-Muslim Hysteria as Part of Take-Over Strategy

The sudden rise of Islamophobia in the United States is alarming while the movement that advances anti-Muslim resentment seems bizarre and filled with eccentric, even dangerous characters. But when viewed in the context of a new, groundbreaking research document by the Center for American Progress and an obscure, decades-old political memorandum by a long-forgotten former Supreme Court Justice, the Islamophobic crusade raging across the country appears perfectly in line with longstanding goals and methods of conservative organizing, and is aimed at much more than demonizing Muslims. In 1971, former US Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell submitted a confidential memorandum to his friend, ...

Tea For ‘12: Mitt Romney Suddenly Finds Time For The Tea Party
Post Date: 2011-08-31 14:12:53 by Brian S

For some undefined but Texas governor-sized-and-shaped reason, Mitt Romney is suddenly very interested in attending tea party events. It's a strategy that's easy to mock, considering the tea party-friendly Rick Perry's poll numbers -- and Romney's penchant to say the right (read: well-received) thing -- but it shows that Team Romney is actively stepping up to the Perry challenge, which could have a dramatic effect on Perry's march to the top of the field. But for now, the sheer political expediency of Romney's upcoming tea party tour has political observers snickering and Democrats pointing and laughing. But Team Romney says there's nothing to see here. This ...

Perry Less Likely Than Romney to Beat Obama

Texas Governor Rick Perry, who leads his rivals for the Republican nomination for president, is less likely than his closest primary competitor to beat President Barack Obama in the general election, a poll released today found. Just two weeks after he announced his candidacy for the White House, 24 percent of Republican voters and those who lean Republican say they prefer Perry while 18 percent favor former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, according to a Quinnipiac University poll. “Being the new kid on the block has benefited Perry,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac’s Polling Institute. “With prominence comes scrutiny, and both his ...

snip On June 4, 2004, while other members of Congress honored the 40th anniversary of the historic act, Paul stood on the floor of the House of Representatives and delivered a diatribe against integration, claiming it violated the Constitution “while diminishing individual freedoms.” “The Civil Rights Act of 1964 not only violated the Constitution and reduced individual liberty; it also failed to achieve its stated goals of promoting racial harmony and a color-blind society,” Paul declared. Not a surprising statement from a man who is touted on white supremacist web sites as their candidate for President. Click for Full Text!

Never-Fail Prediction System Shows 2012 Win For Obama
Post Date: 2011-08-30 11:25:29 by Brian S

American University professor Allan Lichtman is on a winning streak spanning nearly three decades — one that President Barack Obama might have an interest in seeing Lichtman extend. Lichtman created a formula that has correctly predicted the winner of each election since 1984, beginning with the reelection of President Ronald Reagan, U.S. News and World Report reported. The formula that predicted Obama's 2008 win is again showing that the incumbent president will win the election, despite the term-low approval rating Obama has been maintaining for past weeks. “Even if I am being conservative, I don’t see how Obama can lose,” Lichtman said. His model, described in ...

Left Ready to Bash Rich Perry on Immigration

In 2001, Rick Perry spoke at the Border Summit. In the speech he advocated closer ties with our neighbor to the south. While the left is busily trying to provide amnesty to Mexicans who have entered America illegally, they are also preparing to discredit Perry with his Tea Party supporters over his 10 year old views on our relationship with Mexico. Quite frankly, I've changed my position on relations with Mexico quite dramatically since 2001, based upon real world evidence. The basic argument of letting Mexican workers into the country is simple. Without an economic relief valve, the corrupt Mexican system would deteriorate into chaos. We don't need chaos on our border. But the ...

Studies Shed Light On The People Behind The Tea Party [Full Thread]

Just who are the people of the tea party, the big “new thing” in American politics — or at least in the Republican Party? Lots of claims are made for them. They’re newcomers to electoral politics, some say. Conservatives to be sure, but independents, too, spread pretty evenly throughout the country, largely devoid of racial animus, and broadly representative of a large portion of the whole population. That’s the stereotype. But a vastly different description emerges in a pair of studies, one by two academic political scientists and a second by a CBS/New York Times poll, both based on extensive interviews with tea partiers. “Early on, tea partiers were often ...

Herman Cain Barely Edges Out Ron Paul In Georgia Straw Pol

Georgia businessman and Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain won the statewide straw poll held by the Georgia Republican Party on Saturday with 26 percent of the vote, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He beat Texas Congressman Ron Paul by only three votes. Cain was unable to appear at the poll at the Georgia National Fairgrounds because he was still returning from a trip to Israel to attend Glenn Beck’s "Restoring Courage" rally. Texas Gov. Rick Perry came in third with 20 percent of the vote and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who represented Georgia's 6th congressional district from 1979 to 1999, finished fourth with 18 percent. In his weekly memo for the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA, former White House spokesman Bill Burton signals that the first wave of Democratic attacks against Rick Perry won't be about character, land deals, the HPV vaccine or any of the other early oppo hits on the Texas governor. The early Priorities USA attack line against Perry is simpler: He's too extreme to be trusted with the White House. WASHINGTON -- Two weeks before Thanksgiving in 2003, top officials from Texas Governor Rick Perry's office pitched an unusual offer to the state's retired teachers: Let's get into the death business. Perry's budget director, Mike Morrissey, laid out a pitch that was both ambitious and risky, according to notes summarizing the meeting provided to The Huffington Post. According to the notes, which were authenticated by a meeting participant, the Perry administration wanted to help Wall Street investors gamble on how long retired Texas teachers would live. Perry was promising the state big money in exchange for helping Swiss banking giant UBS set up a business of teacher ...
