The Real G.O.P. Dark Horse: None of the Above

Two of my favorite analysts, Rhodes Cook and Josh Putnam, have a good debate going about just how plausible it is that a Republican who is not currently running for president could enter the race later and potentially win it (probably necessitating a brokered convention). Those of you who follow my Twitter feed will know that I think Mr. Cook has the stronger side of the argument; I think there is a small but nontrivial chance that the Republican nominee could be someone like Jeb Bush, Paul Ryan, Mitch Daniels, Tim Pawlenty or Chris Christie. (In fact, I was speculating about these scenarios as long as a month ago.) I’m not going to describe the means by which this would occur; Mr. ...

Very telling... Every single one of these billionaires that donated to Romney or Obama is getting some kind of handout from the taxpayers that they want to keep, protect, and expand. Look who has gotten ZERO contributions from billionaires -- the only person in the race who actually believes in capitalism.

Forbes Op-ed Gives Glowing Endorsement of Ron Paul

Remarkably, Forbes has allowed an editorial on its website that strongly endorses Ron Paul. Naturally, there are the standard op-ed caveats right up front – the opinions expressed are those of the author and are not necessarily shared by Forbes – but despite this it is sincerely amazing the consummate anti-establishment presidential candidate would end up on the corporatized business-minded Forbes website. The Benzinga editorial notes that Ron Paul is absolutely spot-on about the economy and has been for years. QE3 and beyond, the devaluation of the dollar, massive unemployment, tumbling home prices, rising inflation, bankster bailouts, federal deficit spending, and toxic debt ...

Ron Paul's army rises up as Palin gives Santorium? thumbs up

Take it or leave it, Sarah Palin's got a following, platform and a voice in America and she chose to use it with positive comments about former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum's campaign for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination through Sean Hannity -- but will Palin's words slow down Ron Paul's momentum? Maybe she and some others don't realize that, take it or leave it, Ron Paul has an army of supporters who continue to rise up tweeting, YouTubing and shouting "Ron Paul 2012," at events and on street corners as they wave signs for the man who is ready to "Restore America." I'd be willing to bet just like the media black-out caused Ron Paul's ...

Ron Paul Sets New Records as Herman Cain Continues Slide in CHQ Straw Poll
Post Date: 2011-11-29 06:18:06 by We The People

After setting a new personal best in the CHQ Presidential Straw Poll last week, Newt Gingrich fell 11 percent, barely edging out Herman Cain, who also continued his slide for the third week in a row. Yet, at the top, Ron Paul jumped by 15 percent over last week, proving again that the grassroots are demanding a call for genuine fiscal discipline, and not just empty rhetoric. Here is the full breakdown of last week's CHQ Presidential Straw Poll: 1. Ron Paul (56 percent; up 15 percent) 2. Newt Gingrich (14 percent; down 11 percent) 3. Herman Cain (13 percent; down 5 percent) 4. Michele Bachmann (6 percent; no change) 5. Rick Perry (4 percent; no change) 6. Mitt Romney (3 percent; ...

Sheriff Joe Arpaio to endorse Rick Perry next week

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., who calls himself “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” will endorse Texas Gov. Rick Perry next week, a source with knowledge of the endorsement told ABC News. Arpaio espouses a hard-line stance on illegal immigration, leading raids to round up and jail illegal immigrants, and was a major proponent of the controversial Arizona immigration law. Perry has spoken with Arpaio several times over the phone since entering the presidential race. Arpaio, a much sought after endorsement in the GOP field, plans to campaign with Perry in New Hampshire next week, the source said. The Texas governor will be in the Granite State Tuesday ...

New Ron Paul mailer tells Iowans he’s ‘despised by the Washington establishment’

A new mailer from Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul landed in GOP mailboxes in Iowa today, highlighting the post-Thanksgiving rush to the caucuses. (The Register) In a new campaign mailer that arrived at Iowa homes today, Ron Paul shreds three rival GOP candidates’ past policy stances and tells voters that his “record of being right while others were wrong” sets him apart. “Ask anyone in Congress or even anyone in this race. Whether or not they agree with everything I say, they will admit I stick to my principles and that I am despised by the Washington establishment for taking on both parties,” Paul says in the seven-page letter. Paul, a congressman ...

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Presidential candidate Ron Paul said he was sticking to his contention that U.S. military troops should be withdrawn from their longtime bases in Asia. The Libertarian-leaning Republican told CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday that even though polls have him among the early leaders in the race for the GOP nomination, he was not backing off his contention that U.S. forces should not be stationed overseas. "We can't afford it," Paul said when asked if that meant leaving Japan and South Korea. "It would save us a lot of money. All those troops would spend their money here at home." Paul said overseas bases tend to aggravate other ...

Ron Paul: Flawed policies helped lead to 9/11

(CBS News) Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul said Sunday he thinks flawed U.S. foreign policy "contributed to" the causes that led to the September 11 terrorist attacks, though he stopped short of saying the attacks were America's "fault." Paul, appearing on CBS' "Face the Nation," said there was a "connection" between U.S. policies and the 9/11 attacks, and that "policies have an effect." But, he emphasized, "that's a far cry from blaming America." "I think there's an influence," Paul, a staunch Libertarian, told CBS' Bob Schieffer. "That's exactly what, you know, the 9/11 ...

Cain asked for the security and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and congressional leaders approved his request Thursday, Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan confirmed. Elite agents were expected to begin protecting the former pizza company executive sometime Thursday. Cain talks pizza and politics, takes shots at GOP foes Pizza and politics are two things near and dear to Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain -- affirming that manly men love lots of meat toppings on their pies. "The more toppings a man has on his pizza, I believe the more manly he is because the more manly man is not afraid of abundance," Cain told the December issue of GQ Magazine. Cain also took a shot at those who love veggies on their pizza, saying, "A manly man don't want it piled high with vegetables! He would call that a sissy pizza." The former boss of Godfather Pizza-turned-GOP presidential hopeful sat down in October with three GQ writers to ...

Reggie Love, Obama ‘body man,’ to leave WhiteHouse by year’s end Reggie Love, a key member of the Obama entourage, is planning to leave the White House by the end of the year, people close to the administration said. Love, 30, is a popular, gregarious figure in the White House. A onetime forward for the Duke Blue Devils basketball team, Love started out as a staff assistant in Obama’s Senate office after college, rising to become his personal assistant, known as the “body man.” Love’s exit comes at a time of transition for the administration: several longtime advisers have left over the last year, in keeping with the time-honored tradition that close ...

Ron Paul And Libertarians Can't Be Discounted

If the Republican Presidential race were decided on intensity of support, Ron Paul would be the frontrunner. Of course it’s not, so Paul’s constant showing of about 10% in nearly every poll allows the political class to treat him as a fringe candidate. Whether or not you agree with his libertarian doctrines, he deserves more regard because of the loyalty he draws from his supporters and the importance of their votes. Handicappers will speculate on who will win Paul’s voters when he is forced to drop out. I don’t expect Paul to drop out, or for very many of his supporters to abandon him when the process comes down to the two-person race many anticipate between Mitt ...

Herman Cain’s worst enemy

Herman Cain’s worst enemy It’s not any of the women coming forward. It’s his top aide and chief of staff Mark Block. This is now the second time he’s popped off with bogus assertions and insinuations. Not ready for prime time — or 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Just gobsmackingly amateur-hour: Herman Cain’s chief-of-staff Mark Block on Tuesday wrongly claimed that the son of a woman who accused Cain of sexual harassment worked at POLITICO, a news outlet that first broke the story. “At the press conference it was brought up that Karen Kraushaar had come out as one of the women, and we’ve come to find out that her son works at Politico,” Block ...

Ron Paul Second Only To Romney In Obama Match Up

Congressman Ron Paul has once again been proven a top tier presidential candidate in a new aggregate survey combining poll results from over twelve different mainstream sources. The comprehensive survey, compiled by Real Clear Politics, reveals that Paul is second only to Mitt Romney when directly pitted against Obama. The RCP survey draws results from polls carried out by Quinnipiac, Rasmussen Reports, Democracy Corps (D), Associated Press, Time, PPP, NBC News, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Washington Post, Reuters and Gallup. Paul scores an average of 41.6% to Obama’s 47.6%, with only Romney bettering that 6% difference. The results of the survey were as follows: 1. Obama vs. Romney: ...

Why Cain isn't sunk with GOP

The Herman Cain spectacle demonstrates one thing: What this country needs is a good smoke-filled room. Maybe his party could find out how serious the sexual harassment charges against Cain were. “People need to know what the facts are,” former Republican Party Chairman Haley Barbour said on Sunday. In what seems like the distant past, according to legend, candidates were vetted by party leaders who took them aside and asked, “Is there anything about your moral or medical or legal or financial history we ought to know about?” Warren Harding is said to have replied, “I’m as pure as the driven snow.” In those days, presidential nominations were ...

Herman Cain Not Entirely Sure What This Medicare Thing Is

Serial scumball Newt Gingrich and banal grifter idiot Herman Cain held some kind of “modified Lincoln Douglas style debate” Saturday night, which attracted exactly as much media attention as Newt Gingrich desperately blathering reasons why he deserves Herman Cain’s veep pick on a Saturday night as you’d expect. There was exactly one fun part, when Herman Cain was asked the world’s most incredibly basic question on whether he will keep Medicare (the current “defined benefits plan”) or destroy Medicare (Paul Ryan’s “premium support plan”). Herman Cain has no idea what any of that is, so he tries his usual tack of repeating a few of the words ...

“The Kochs are on a whole different level. There’s no one else who has spent this much money. The sheer dimension of it is what sets them apart. They are the Standard Oil of our times.” – Charles Lewis, founder of the non-partisan Center for Public Integrity, quoted in a New Yorker expose of the Koch Brothers Over the years, the Koch Brothers have spent over $50 million on campaigns in their fight to stop any action on climate change. Cain mulls lawsuit against Politico: aide (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain, facing sexual harassment accusations, is weighing a lawsuit against the news outlet that first reported the claims, a spokesman said on Friday. Washington-based Politico broke the story on Sunday night that two former female employees of the National Restaurant Association accused Cain of sexual harassment while he headed that trade group during the 1990s. Cain maintains his innocence and has blasted the media, giving conflicting accounts of the case and accusing rival Rick Perry of instigating the controversy to derail his surging campaign for the 2012 Republican presidential ...

Rep. Walsh lauded by group for being pro-family, though accused of owing child support

Republican Rep. Joe Walsh was the only Illinois congressman to be named a “True Blue” member of Congress for “unwavering support of the family” by the Family Research Council Action committee Thursday. Walsh’s ex-wife says Walsh owes more than $100,000 in back child support for their three children. Walsh counters that he and his wife had a “verbal agreement” that he didn’t have to pay child support during years when he wasn’t earning as much. “We thank Cong. Walsh who has voted consistently to defend faith, family and freedom,” said FRCA President Tony Perkins. “Cong. Walsh and other ‘True Blue Members’ have voted to ...

A new report claims that Republican presidential contender Herman Cain voted for Democrat Bill Clinton for president in his first run, as well as for two Nebraska Democratic candidates in the past. In a story on the Nebraska Watchdog website, Joe Jordan writes that Mr. Cain supported Mr.Clinton during his 1992 presidential bid, 17 months before he squared off with Mr. Clinton over his push to overhaul the national health care system. "According to J. D. Gordon, Cain's vice-president of communications, Clinton was the last Democratic candidate for President that Cain supported," the report says. "Gordon tells Nebraska Watchdog that by 1996 Cain — who had joined up ...

Businessman Herman Cain and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney are running nearly even atop the field of 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows, with most Republicans dismissing the harassment allegations that over the past week have roiled Cain’s campaign. Seven in 10 Republicans say reports that Cain made unwanted advances toward two employees when he was head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s — allegations which have been stiffly rebutted by Cain’s campaign — do not matter when it comes to picking a candidate. But the potential threat to his burgeoning campaign is evident as well, with Cain slipping to ...

Jeff Merkley, Senate Democrats say U.S. Constitution must be changed to control campaign spending

WASHINGTON - Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley and six other Democrats charged Tuesday that modern political campaigns - and democracy itself - are threatened by a pair of "awful" Supreme Court decisions that can only be fixed by changing the U.S. Constitution itself. The senators said during a news conference that adding a new provision to the Constitution is necessary if Congress wants to nullify a 1976 ruling that said campaign spending was the same as free speech and a 2010 ruling that removed all limits on campaign spending for special interests, corporations and labor unions. "In the mid-70s the activist Supreme Court opened the flood gates to allow special interest money to ...

Cain Difficulties Are Romney Gain as Former Governor Hoards Cash

Mitt Romney, a leader in the Republican presidential race a year out from the 2012 elections, is biding his time and saving his campaign cash as he benefits from the missteps of his rivals. At this point four years ago, the former Massachusetts governor, who was mounting his first White House run, had spent $11 million on television advertising, according to an analysis by KantarMedia/CMAG, a New York-based firm that tracks political advertising. Today, with the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses and Jan. 10 New Hampshire primary approaching, Romney has yet to spend a dime on commercials. “We’ve all been waiting for when Romney is going to start airing, and you would have expected to start ...
