Medicare Premiums Would Rise for 59% With Ryan Plan
Post Date: 2012-10-15 12:47:38 by Brian S

Elderly people in Florida would have paid more than $200 extra for traditional Medicare if a system similar to Paul Ryan’s proposed overhaul of the program was in place in 2010, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Ryan, the Republican vice presidential nominee, wants to transform Medicare into a “premium support” system in which beneficiaries get a fixed payment from the government for their insurance, rather than guaranteed benefits. Such a plan would lead to wide variations in Medicare costs across the country, according to the study today by the nonprofit Kaiser group. Fifty-nine percent of beneficiaries would have paid more in 2010, unless they switched from ...

Obama Showcases Auto Industry Bailout

US President Barack Obama on Saturday praised the decision early in his administration to bail out the failing US automobile industry, arguing it has now become a leading job creator. “Today, auto sales are the highest they’ve been in more than four years,” Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address. “GM is back”, he continued. “Ford and Chrysler are growing again. Together, our auto industry has created nearly a quarter of a million new jobs right here in America.” The financial bailout of the industry dates back to January 2009, when all three major US auto companies — GM, Chrysler and Ford — stood on the verge of bankruptcy, ...

Biden Had The Edge (42 percent to 35 percent) In VP Debate: Reuters/Ipsos Poll

By Gabriel Debenedetti Fri Oct 12, 2012 6:26pm EDT (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden came out on top of Thursday night's vice presidential debate with Republican challenger Paul Ryan, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. The energetic Biden claimed a seven-point victory - 42 percent to 35 percent - among registered voters, with a similar margin among independents. Nearly a quarter of registered voters and about a third of independents were unsure who did a better job during the debate at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Democrats will be hoping Biden's performance helps President Barack Obama recover from a week-long slide in the polls after his poor showing against Mitt ...

Ohio Loses Appeal, Can’t Reject Voters in Wrong Precincts
Post Date: 2012-10-12 10:40:38 by Brian S

Ohio was barred from disqualifying provisional ballots cast in the wrong precinct, an appeals court said, upholding an earlier ruling. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Cincinnati issued the ruling yesterday, the second loss in two weeks for the state in election-related lawsuits. A lower-court federal judge in August ruled that provisional ballots, used to record votes when eligibility is an issue, can’t be thrown out if they’re filed in the wrong precinct as a result of poll-worker error. Opponents of a 2006 law saying they must be discarded argued that the law would unfairly cause the rejection of thousands of votes in the November election. The lawsuit is one of at least 15 ...

NBC/Marist/WSJ Poll: Even After Listless Debate, Obama Leads By 6 In Ohio

It’s still unclear what the long-term fallout from President Barack Obama’s lackluster debate performance will be, but a poll released Thursday shows he continues to hold the upper-hand in the coveted bellwether of Ohio. That’s the upshot of the latest survey from NBC News, Marist College and the Wall Street Journal, which shows Obama leading Romney among likely Buckeye State voters, 51 percent to 45 percent. While that’s a 2-point uptick for Romney since the previous NBC/Marist/WSJ poll Ohio released a week ago, which showed Obama up 51 percent to 43 percent, voters’ impressions of the two candidates have remained largely the same. Fifty-one percent of Ohio ...

Social Conservatives Remind Romney Of Pledge Against Abortion, For 'Culture Of Life' In US

A day after Mitt Romney downplayed his plans to fight abortion, social conservatives on Wednesday offered the Republican presidential nominee a not-so-subtle reminder of his pledge to do "everything in my power to cultivate, promote, and support a culture of life in America." The head of the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List distributed an article Romney penned last summer vowing to prohibit federal funding for Planned Parenthood, while backing legislation that would "protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from abortion." In the June 2011 article, Romney also expressed support for the reversal of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling ...

McCaskill Hits Akin With Ads Featuring Raped Women

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill took aim Wednesday at Republican challenger Todd Akin with a new series of TV ads featuring rape survivors outraged by Akin's remark about "legitimate rape" and his opposition to emergency contraception. The three separate ads feature individual testimonials from three women who said they were raped, including one who describes herself as a "pro-life" Republican and another self-described "pro-life mother" who calls herself a "woman of faith." The ads are among the most powerful yet by McCaskill, who is intent on reminding voters of Akin's remark about women's bodies ...

9 Things That Show Mitt Romney Is Morally Bankrupt

In the psychic make-up of any politician, the phenomenon of compartmentalization is common, but rare is the politician who proudly makes an art of it, as has Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Even as he publicly celebrates his squeaky-clean personal life, Romney lauds his own brutal record as a leveraged buyout specialist and lies with impunity on the stump, often in terms laden with race-baiting code.  To Romney, it seems, personal morality amounts to a roster of good personal habits (no smoking or drinking, a faithful marriage, generosity and compassion for ailing members of his faith community) that add up to a kind of personal exceptionalism that trumps whatever ...

Mother Of Slain SEAL Tells Romney To Stop Talking About Her Son ("I don't trust Romney"...)

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — At a town hall here Wednesday, Mitt Romney re-told a story he first revealed earlier this week about meeting one of the Navy SEALs who would later be killed in the attacks on the Benghazi consulate. Romney has used the account in recent days on the stump to demonstrate the courage of Americans, in particular the troops: Upon hearing that the consulate was under attack, Glenn Doherty, 42, headed toward the action to try to defend it. It's a compelling story, offering a surprisingly personal link between the candidate and the tragedy in Libya — but it's one the SEAL's mother wants him to stop telling. Wednesday morning, NBC's Boston affiliate ...

Vice Presidential Debate Could Be A Tale Of Two Ryans

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida | Wed Oct 10, 2012 8:59am EDT (Reuters) - Republican Congressman Paul Ryan is a changed man. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney's running mate made a name for himself as a bold fiscal crusader, willing to make big, unpopular cuts to entitlements to get U.S. finances in order. But since Romney tapped him in August to join his campaign, the vice presidential candidate has become more prudent, avoiding detailed discussion of his budget plan and earning the nickname "mini-Mitt" for displaying a cautious streak like his boss. For Vice President Joe Biden, a major question heading into his debate with Ryan in Kentucky on Thursday is "a choice of which ...

Poll: More Funding for Public Television, Not Less

A new poll shows Mitt Romney's vow to cut federal funding for PBS isn't helping him. According to the Washington Times/Zogby survey released Tuesday, 55 percent of likely voters support federal money for public television and consider it a "worthwhile" use of such funds. Even a quarter of voters who plan to vote for Romney said they would like to see the money keep flowing. Thirty-five percent of the 800 likely voters surveyed in the poll opposed federal funding for PBS. The GOP presidential candidate ruffled some feathers last week when he vowed to cut federal money for PBS during the first presidential debate in Denver. Within minutes, #BigBird was one of the fastest ...

PAC released an new TV ad criticizing the West Virginia Democrat for voting to send U.S. aid to Libya, Egypt, and Pakistan. Paul has made an effort to block aid to those countries, but Manchin has opposed his effort. Graham told reporters Manchin made the right vote. Paul’s PAC is also running a spot against Sen. Romney: Abortion Not Part Of My Agenda

Mitt Romney on Tuesday said he had no plans to push for limited access to abortions in the U.S. if elected president. “There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,” the Republican presidential nominee told The Des Moines Register. Romney said he would, however, reinstate the Mexico City Policy to prevent the United States from funding nongovernmental organizations that provide abortion related services overseas. Romney spokeswoman, Andrea Saul, later clarified to the National Review Online that the GOP candidate “would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for ...

Pew: Romney leads by 4 points

In the first national poll to be conducted entirely after the opening presidential debate, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney now leads President Barack Obama by 4 points. The poll, conducted by Pew Research Center from Thursday through Sunday and released on Monday, shows Romney leading Obama among likely voters nationwide, 49 percent to 45 percent. That's a stark contrast from Pew's mid-September poll after both parties' conventions, which showed Obama up 8 points among likely voters. The dramatic 12-point swing in Pew's poll from Obama to Romney is perhaps the strongest piece of evidence to date that the president has paid a political price for his listless ...

Arkansas Republican Endorses Death Penalty For Children

A man running as a Republican for State Representative in Arkansas published a book in which he endorses the death penalty for rebellious children and much, much more. In his book “God’s Law: The Only Political Solution,” published in April, former Arkansas Department of Human Services attorney Charlie Fuqua explains that he supports killing wayward kids because that’s what a Bronze Age tribe did in his favorite religious text. “The maintenance of civil order in society rests on the foundation of family discipline,” he wrote, according to an excerpt published by The Arkansas Times. “Therefore, a child who disrespects his parents must be permanently removed ...

GOP Arkansas State Representative: Slavery Was A ‘Blessing In Disguise’ For ‘The Blacks’

In his 2010 book Letters to the Editor: Confessions of a Frustrated Conservative, Arkansas State Rep. Jon Hubbard (R-Jonesboro) revealed that he believes slavery was a blessing in disguise and that African Americans do not value education. The Arkansas Times reports that Hubbard writes in his book: Slavery was good for black people: “… the institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise. The blacks who could endure those conditions and circumstances would someday be rewarded with citizenship in the greatest nation ever established upon the face of the Earth.” (Pages 183-89) If you ...

Indiana Senate Race May Hinge On Disenchanted Lugar Backers

By Nick Carey JEFFERSONVILLE, Indiana | Sun Oct 7, 2012 12:24pm EDT (Reuters) - Indiana Republicans last spring spurned long-time Senator Richard Lugar for a more conservative candidate, but now supporters of the soft-spoken moderate may tip the balance in the race that could determine which party controls the U.S. Senate. Republican Richard Mourdock, the state treasurer, and his Democratic opponent, Congressman Joe Donnelly, are wooing not just independent voters but disaffected and angry "Lugar Republicans." "Dick Lugar is a statesman," said Karl Stein, 63, a Republican, as he was walking the dog near Indianapolis. "I don't like the way he was thrown ...

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus: Gary Johnson Is A ‘Non-Factor’

Although former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson is gaining in the polls and is expected to be on the ballot in all 50 states as third-party presidential candidate, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus insisted on Sunday that the libertarian was a “non-factor.” During an interview with Priebus on CNN, host Candy Crowley noted that 4 percent of Colorado voters recently said they planned to vote for a third-party candidate. “The conventional wisdom is that he’s going to draw from Mitt Romney,” Crowley explained. “And it makes a difference in Colorado, it makes a difference in Virginia, it will make a difference in North Carolina.” ...

Ron Paul Suggests He'll Vote For Gary Johnson

In a Fox Business interview Wednesday, Rep. Ron Paul refused to say who he was planning on voting for — but ruled out voting for Mitt Romney or President Obama, leaving only one plausible option. "I obviously haven't announced in support for Romney, so that means that's very unlikely," Paul said. "And I don't think anybody think's I'm going to vote for Obama. So it's back to that frustration level in not seeing a dramatic choice in how the system works." "Tonight there's a debate going on," Paul said. "And if you come to the conclusion that the candidates aren't all that different, why do we have to just listen to two ...

Court Orders Ohio To Restore Early Voting For All Residents

A federal appeals court has ruled that the state of Ohio extend early voting hours to all residents, overturning a measure that limited the practice to military members and voters living overseas. Talking Points Memo reported that the ruling by the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals allows for voting to take place on the weekend before the Nov. 6 general election. “The State’s asserted goal of accommodating the unique situation of members of the military, who may be called away at a moment’s notice in service to the nation, is certainly a worthy and commendable goal,” the court said in its ruling (PDF). “However, while there is a compelling reason to provide more ...

A big-name Hollywood fundraiser for Barack Obama is releasing the first feature film about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden two days before the US presidential election. “SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden” is distributed by Harvey Weinstein, the respected movie mogul who hosted the president at a celebrity-studded fundraising event in New England last month. In a press release, the National Geographic Channel said it would premiere “SEAL Team Six” on November 4 after its president Howard Owens and Weinstein discussed “the insight the film is sure to evoke in all Americans.” The film — directed by John Stockwell and produced for theatrical ...

Representative Nan Hayworth of New York, first elected with support from the anti-government spending Tea Party movement in 2010, is aiming for the political center in this year’s campaign against a Democrat trying to dredge up her past. Hayworth, 52, vowed two years ago to “slash federal spending” and attacked “King Barack and his out-of-control Congress,” referring to President Barack Obama and the Democrats who then controlled the Senate and House. Now she boasts of bringing federal money to her district, tells a local television interviewer that she has been “eager to work with Democratic colleagues and with the president all along,” and touts ...

Fox News' Brian Kilmeade is not the person one would expect to knock down a disingenuous attack on President Obama. Indeed, Kilmeade is as enthusiastic a GOP shill as anyone else on his network and isn't exactly known for his piercing insight. And yet this morning he provided a concise and effective rebuttal to the Daily Caller's Drudge-hyped video of President Obama using "racially charged rhetoric" in a 2007 speech: whatever Obama said, noted Kilmeade, he hasn't "governed in a racist way." It's an important point that gets right to the heart of why the Daily Caller's video was, to borrow from Ta-Nehisi Coates, a nothing-burger slathered in weak ...
