Tancredo Returning To GOP After Failed Gov Bid
Post Date: 2011-01-18 15:26:57 by Brian S

DENVER (AP) -- Former Republican congressman Tom Tancredo, who quit the party last year to run as a third-party candidate for Colorado governor, is headed back to the GOP. Tancredo told The Associated Press Tuesday he is coming back to the GOP "because they're the only game in town." Tancredo said his decision to join the American Constitution Party was opportunistic, but he and the party had an understanding that he would not stay. GOP state chairman Dick Wadhams, who clashed publicly with Tancredo over criticism of the Republican Party, said everyone is welcome to join the Colorado GOP. He refused to say whether he thought Tancredo would be welcomed back.

John Bolton: I Could Win The GOP Nomination In 2012

Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, rumored to be considering a presidential run in 2012, thinks he could win the Republican nomination if he ran: "Well, I think I could win the Republican nomination if I chose to run, because I do think I'm in the mainstream of the Republican Party." Talking to RT America, Bolton added that "I think Barack Obama is beatable in 2012." Then he backtracked a little: But on the other hand, I've never run for public office before. I have no idea whether this is the best course for me, and that's why -- right now -- I'm thinking through whether, in fact, to become a candidate, talking to people who have been in campaigns ...

Rand Paul announces Senate Tea Party Caucus (DeMint, Lee - inaugural members)

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul on Friday announced the formation of a new Senate Tea Party Caucus, taking a formal step toward uniting members of the movement in the 112th Congress. Paul and Sens. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) will be the group's inaugural members, according to a joint statement released by Paul's office. "Republicans in the Senate have already made a pledge to end earmarks and fight for a balanced-budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution," Paul said in the statement. "By joining with my fellow Senators, Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Mike Lee of Utah, as well as grassroots groups who see the need for government reform, the caucus ...

Opinion: Don’t Write Sarah Palin Off Yet...

Sarah Palin’s ‘blood libel’ speech may have confirmed that she has a tendency to say the wrong thing in the wrong way, but it would be foolish not to recognise that it also shows why she is a force to be reckoned with. “…Especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible." When I heard those words for the first time and read the press coverage of them my immediate reaction was "Uh oh, here she goes again." But I was wrong. The Arizona shooting has been followed by much debate on two issues. ...

Rethinking B. Hussein Obama's political performance @ Tucson Democratic Death Rally

Rethinking Obama's political performance in Tucson Pundits and politicians alike praised President Obama's speech at the Tucson memorial service last Wednesday. "A wonderful speech," wrote the New York Times' David Brooks. "A magnificent performance," wrote National Review's Rich Lowry. "A terrific speech," wrote Sen. John McCain. And those were just the voices on the right. Obama's tribute to the victims of the shooting and the heroism of bystanders was appreciated by everyone. But many conservatives particularly admired the speech because the president took care to say, in clear terms, that political rhetoric did not cause the violence ...

President Obama’s Cuts To Defense Budget Are Good First Step, GOP Representative Says

The Obama administration's $78 billion cut to the defense budget is a good start to protect nation, according to a Republican congressman from California. “This is just the beginning,” Rep. John Campbell (R-CA) said on Fox Business Network’s Bulls & Bears Monday. He continued, “We need to look at some more, and look at what is our role, what is our role going to be going forward with the military to keep ourselves safe but know we don’t have unlimited resources.” Campbell's urge is the latest among an informal alliance among libertarians and progressives pushing for deeper cuts to the US military. "Republicans also should resist pressure ...

Short-Lived Celebration For New RNC Chairman?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The new Republican Party chairman's celebration may be short-lived. From the get-go, Reince Priebus faces a ton of tough tasks in the wake of Michael Steele's troubled tenure. Priebus must dig the party out of a $22 million hole. He must prepare the GOP to take on President Barack Obama. He must unite a GOP in the midst of an identity crisis fueled by the tea party. He must restore credibility to a national party whose power has diminished over time, and particularly in the past two years under Steele. Steele watched from the sidelines as several GOP-leaning outside groups formed to assume campaign functions that the party historically has managed, including ...

Retreads Still Drive GOP Agenda

BALTIMORE — Plenty of comparisons have been drawn between the Republican romp of 1995 and the GOP shellacking of 2010. But how little the GOP has actually changed is on stark display here, where the House Republican “Congress of Tomorrow” retreat seems more like a curtain call from yesteryear. Here’s the scene: Former Speaker Newt Gingrich, is holding forth with big ideas and “30,000-foot” world view on health care and politics. Frank Luntz, the old-school Republican word guru, was called in to coach the neophyte politicians on how to message their impending vote to increase the amount of money the nation can borrow. Former Sen. Phil Gramm (R-Texas) is ...

Tea Party Must Take A Stand Against The PATRIOT Act

While browsing online, reading one news site after another, I stumbled on this. AntiWar.com, a very popular antiwar, pro liberty website dropped a bombshell. It reported that Republican Representative Mike Rogers introduced H.R. 67,on January 5, 2011, which will extend expiring provisions of the USA PATRIOT Improvement and Reauthorization Act of 2005 and Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 until February 29, 2012. According to the article, there is very little opposition from either party.      Patriot Act is highly unconstitutional (see here, here, here and here) and it is used to terrorize the American people (see here, here, here and here). The bill ...

He's Back? Obama's Approval Rating Surges In Recent Polls

Just two months removed from a midterm shellacking that saw the GOP win a whopping 63 seats in the House, President Obama's approval rating has suddenly spiked in recent polls, a change so significant that for the first time in eight months the President has a net positive approval rating in the TPM Poll Average. In the current TPM Poll Average, Obama posts an approval rating of 47.9% compared to a disapproval rating of 47.3%. It marks the first time Obama has notched a net positive in the TPM average since May 18, when that split was 47.7% to 47.6%. Virtually every pollster has tracked at least a nominal improvement in the President's approval rating over the last month or so, ...

(01-14) 08:46 PST OXON HILL, Md. (AP) -- Will he be fired or not? And if not Michael Steele as GOP chief, then who? It was anyone's guess as the election of the next Republican National Committee chairman got under way Friday. Steele, the embattled party leader who surprised even his closest aides by seeking re-election, is seeking to hold off four challengers accusing him of financial mismanagement and poor stewardship during his rocky two-year tenure. "I want to thank you so much for the chance to serve at a time when our party was changing, struggling to grow, regain its footing, find its voice, reconnect with people and to stand proud again," Steele told the 168 ...

Obama Approval Rises As Economy Improves: Poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama is getting a bump in his approval ratings from an improving U.S. economy but Americans want him to focus on reducing U.S. debt and spending, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Wednesday. The poll found reasons for optimism for Obama as he searches for areas of compromise with newly emboldened Republicans this year and lays the groundwork for his 2012 re-election bid. Obama's job approval rating went up to 50 percent from 45 percent in December, the first time Obama has achieved 50 percent approval in this poll since last June. Still, many Americans still do not approve of his job performance -- 47 percent disapproved of him in this poll, ...

Bachmann says she's found $450 billion in budget cuts By Vicki Needham - 01/07/11 03:02 PM ET As House Republicans seek upwards of $100 billion in spending cuts, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said Friday that her staff has found about $450 billion to slash from the federal budget — about half of all discretionary spending. "My staff and I sat down, we've looked at the federal budget, and just our first swipe across the budget, so to speak, we've come up with about $450 billion worth of cuts,” she said on ABC’s "Top Line." She didn't outline specific cuts but said each federal agency would see its budget trimmed. "They aren't ...

Republican bid to scrap healthcare hits snag

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican efforts to scrap President Barack Obama's healthcare reform took a hit on Thursday when budget analysts said repeal would add billions of dollars to the federal budget deficit. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated overturning the reform signed by Obama last year would add about $230 billion to the deficit by 2021 and result in 32 million fewer people having health insurance. That was a blow to Republican campaign promises to slash the federal budget deficit. The White House Office of Management and Budget said the administration "strongly opposes" passage of the repeal legislation, known as H.R. 2, saying it would ...

Republicans acknowledge debt limit should rise WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans acknowledged on Thursday they will have to sign off on more deficit spending to avoid a debt default that would roil financial markets and bring the government to a grinding halt. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner pressed lawmakers to raise the nation's $14.3 trillion debt limit to allow the United States to borrow more and avert a crisis in the coming months. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, a Republican, said he recognized the need to allow the government to go deeper in debt. "Will the debt ceiling ... have to be raised? Yes," said Ryan, who leads Republican efforts to slash ...

I mean, look at the exhibitors! Not only are there going to be Sodomites, it’s also been infiltrated by the creeping stealth global jihad: Right-Wingers Claim Muslim Brotherhood Has Infiltrated CPAC. The right-wing site World Net Daily and conservative columnist Frank Gaffney came up with a new reason this week to hate the Conservative Political Action Conference, arguing that it has been infiltrated by the Muslim Brotherhood thanks to Grover Norquist, the Republican group ...

Republican Intentions in Congress May Exceed Ability to Cut Obama Programs

Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- As Republican lawmakers move to challenge President Barack Obama on topics as varied as health care and federal spending, they will have to overcome divisions within their own party as well as Democratic opposition. Republicans take control of the House today for the first time in four years, with plans to vote on a repeal of the health-care overhaul and to approve $100 billion in spending cuts -- both among measures intended to fulfill campaign pledges they made before their November victory. Those moves will likely be blocked by the Democratic- controlled Senate. On top of that, public opinion may stand in the way, with polls showing that voters trust Obama more ...

Gibbs Leaving Post as Obama's Press Secretary to Help With Re-Election Bid

Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said he’s stepping down to become an outside political adviser to President Barack Obama and help with his re-election campaign. Gibbs, 39, who has worked with Obama since 2004, said today he intends to leave sometime next month. The choice of a successor hasn’t been made, he said. The announcement marks the latest in a series of staff changes at the White House that began last July and has accelerated as Obama enters the second half of his term. While the president achieved major policy goals during his first two years --including an overhaul of the health-care system and new rules for Wall Street -- his agenda ...

Democrats Push to Curtail Filibuster, Fix ‘Broken’ U.S. Senate

Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Senate Democrats will push as one of their first acts in the new Congress a bid to undercut one of the chamber’s most ingrained rules: the filibuster. The effort that begins today is fueled by Republicans’ growing use of the filibuster -- the refusal to end debate -- to block legislation since Democrats took control of the Senate in 2007. “The Senate is broken,” said Senator Jeff Merkley, an Oregon Democrat who proposes that lawmakers be on the floor debating throughout the time they are relying on filibusters to derail measures. “You shouldn’t filibuster casually” by being able, as currently allowed, to invoke the tactic ...

House freshman throws a party – and GOP cringes With Republican leaders anxious to set an austere tone for their ascendance into the House majority this week, the lavish fundraiser scheduled for Tuesday night at a trendy Washington hotel to benefit a dozen GOP freshmen is not exactly the populist image leaders are anxious to project. House Speaker-elect John Boehner, whose name was featured on the invitation, is nonetheless skipping the event at the W Hotel, where lobbyists, political action committee managers and others paying the $2,500 ticket price will be treated to a performance by country music star LeAnn Rimes (a $50,000 package includes a block of eight tickets and a ...

While the president is sneaking around making appointments behind Congress’s back, the 111th Congress will not go down in history as one of the worst in the history of this country, but as the worst Congress that ever darkened the halls of government, with their drive to push our already staggering economy over the edge, to complete the destruction started with their manipulation of the sub-prime mortgage market that precipitated the entire mess to start with. True to their Marxist ideology, this lame duck Congress is continuing to write and pass harmful and highly questionable legislation right to the bitter end, when most of them will be able to ride off into the sunset without ...

We don’t like what they’ve done. We don’t like what they’d like to do if they get the chance. We cannot depend on the Republicans anymore, if we ever could. The establishment party seems to have turned back the clock and are determined to relive the ‘good old days’ of the Repubics (thanks, Mark). In point of fact, we’ve all but squandered the greatest gift the Almighty ever granted any people. What remains to be seen is whether we have the sand to do the job. We’ve made a bare start with the Republican sweep of the Congress. So far, it’s been a mixed bag, with Republicans deal-making to get a two year extension on the reduction of the Clinton tax increases… How easily we forget. Wherever you live on the planet, the jolly red-faced gentleman, hitching up his pants around his portly frame, will have visited you by now. Er… no, I’m not referring to Barney Frank! There’s certainly a lot to forgive this year. The year started with the news that the number of long-term unemployed was the highest since official records began, back in 1948. While the country suffered the effects of high unemployment, low consumer confidence and failing businesses, the Obama administration ...
