New MoveOn.org ad hits GOP for waging 'war on women' By Adele Hampton - 03/13/12 02:31 PM ET Liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org released a new attack ad accusing the Republican party of pushing a "war on women. The ad features an all-female cast of MoveOn.org members reading selected statements from Republicans, including recent remarks from presidential candidate Rick Santorum opposing abortion in rape cases and Rush Limbaugh's criticisms of the administration's contraception mandate."A woman impregnated through rape, should accept that horribly created gift, the gift of human life. Accept what God has given you and make the best of a bad situation, ...

WASHINGTON | Tue Mar 13, 2012 6:31pm EDT (Reuters) - For the first time since early July, more Americans approve of the job President Barack Obama is doing than disapprove, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll that shows his approval rating now at 50 percent. The poll, taken March 8-11 on the heels of reports that 227,000 jobs were added to the U.S. economy in February, indicates that Obama's rating has risen by 2 percentage points during the past month. The percentage of Americans who disapprove of the Democratic president was 48 percent, down from 49 percent in February. Some other polls have shown a recent dip in Obama's approval rating, and linked that to rising gasoline ...

Because you certainly will not get it from slick Rick In a remarkable video posted to Youtube yesterday, Rick Santorum tells a man attending one of his events that if he supports limited government and debt reduction he should go vote for Ron Paul. In the brief clip, the man who describes himself as an independent voter, questions Santorums record and support for big government programs like Medicare Part D, No Child Left Behind, and five debt ceiling increases, while he was a Senator from Pennsylvania. What is limited government about that sir? the man asks Santorum. A visibly annoyed Santorum fires back Vote for Ron Paul, thats what you should ...

The U.S. publics economic outlook is turning from fear to hope with the presidential election campaign under way. More than twice as many Americans view the economys prospects as brightening as see them darkening, a reversal from nine months ago, when more people expected deterioration ahead, according to a Bloomberg National Poll conducted March 8-11. Its starting to get better, says survey respondent Kelsey Simeon, 21, a mechanical-engineering student at California State University, Sacramento, in a follow-up interview. Strip malls that were empty are starting to fill up. Everyones going out to eat more. People are spending more money on ...
Democrats Leading GOP By 25 Points Among Women Post Date: 2012-03-12 13:08:32 by Brian S

The Republican fight against health care rights for women may end up hurting the party on election day, according to a new poll. A Washington Post survey released Monday found that Democrats are perceived as caring more about issues that are important to women by 25 points, 55 percent to 30 percent. The poll also showed that a large majority of all voters support the idea that businesses should be required to cover the full cost of contraception for female employees. Among all voters, 61 percent supported a mandate for birth control coverage, while 35 percent did not. Of those who said contraception should be included in insurance coverage at no cost, 79 percent agreed that ...
Republican Turnout Lags Behind 2008 and 2000 White House Races Post Date: 2012-03-12 12:49:59 by Brian S

Dissatisfaction with the Republican presidential candidates contributed to lower voter turnout in this years early primary contests, compared with participation in 2008 and 2000, a new study suggests. Of the 13 states that have held Republican primaries so far, 8 had lower turnouts than four years ago, the Bipartisan Policy Center and American Universitys Center for the Study of the American Electorate in Washington reported yesterday. The problem for Republicans lies not with the process but rather with their candidates, Curtis Gans, the director of the Center for the Study of the American Electorate, wrote in a commentary accompanying the findings. Just 20 ...
Republican Georgia Lawmaker Compares Women To Cows And Pigs Post Date: 2012-03-10 12:42:00 by Brian S

Republican Georgia state Rep. Terry England says that his experience with cows, pigs and chickens has proven to him that women should be forced to have their babies after 20 weeks of pregnancy. In a debate over Georgia House Bill 954, which would ban abortions after 20 weeks even if the baby is not expected to live, England recalled the time he had spent with livestock. Life gives us many experiences, he explained. Ive had the experience of delivering calves, dead and alive delivering pigs, dead and alive.

Obama’s Re-Election Case Bolstered by February Jobs Report Post Date: 2012-03-09 14:08:10 by Brian S

A surge in new jobs last month that held the U.S. unemployment rate to 8.3 percent highlights a strengthening economy that bolsters President Barack Obama as he approaches re-election. If this continues, hell have the edge -- not necessarily a huge edge but an edge, said Christopher Wlezien, a political science professor at Temple University in Philadelphia and co- author with Robert Erikson of the forthcoming book The Timeline of Presidential Elections. Employers added 227,000 jobs in February, more than forecast, the Labor Department reported today in Washington. The median projection of economists in a Bloomberg News survey called for a 210,000 increase. ...

Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday night made the dubious claim that Harvard law professor Charles J. Ogletree, Jr., a former mentor of President Barack Obama, purposefully hid footage from the media in 2008. But Ogletree could not have suppressed the footage even if he wanted to. Local news station WGBH confirmed to Raw Story that it owns the footage and controls its distribution. On his show, Hannity said he revealed a video that by their very own admission, friends of Barack Obama have been keeping under lock and key. Hannity later claimed that the footage was intentionally covered up according to a close confidant of the president, and thats Harvard ...
Pro-Ron Paul Super PAC Rethinks Spending Post Date: 2012-03-07 19:18:43 by Brian S

The main super PAC supporting Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is reassessing its heavy financial support of the Texas congressman following his disappointing Super Tuesday performance, an official confirmed to POLITICO. Yes, we are reassessing our efforts, but we have always felt that we are a part of a larger movement rather than just a single election, Endorse Liberty super PAC leader Abe Niederhauser said. We will continue to support Dr. Paul, but ultimately, we support an idea. We will support candidates who uphold the principles of liberty. We may also get involved in some of the Senate and House races. Continue Reading If Endorse Liberty scales ...

But when she discovered that she carries the BCRA1 gene, which carries a 90 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, she had some serious medical decisions to make especially as her graduate programs health insurance coverage would run out once she finished her degree. Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich paused while competing for votes in the high-stakes Super Tuesday primaries to join the speakers lineup at a conference of Americas leading pro-Israel lobby. Romney and Gingrich appeared by satellite, while Santorum spoke to the group in person. Mitt Romney is reaching for breakout victories today to propel him to a commanding lead in the Republican presidential race, as Rick Santorum presses for enough Super Tuesday support to keep his bid alive and stoke doubts about the front-runner. Polls showed Romney ahead of his competitors among Republican voters nationally, gaining momentum in the swing state of Ohio -- one of todays most coveted prizes -- and running competitively in Tennessee, a Super Tuesday state the Santorum camp has focused on. If he wins most of the states, hell be the presumptive nominee; hes close to that right now, Bob Bennett, a former Ohio Republican chairman who represents the ...

President Obama will hold his first press conference of the year at the White House on Tuesday, according to a tweet from press secretary Jay Carney. President Obama will hold a news conference with the White House press corps tomorrow afternoon, the tweet said. No other details were immediately available. It will be the first solo, long-form press conference of its kind since October 2011, and coincides with a huge day in the Republican nomination process. Ten states head to the polls on March 6, or Super Tuesday, which many view as a potential turning point in the race to see who the presidents challenger will be in the general election this fall. The Republican Party Declares War On Women Post Date: 2012-03-05 16:45:03 by Brian S

Republicans and their Tea Party shock troops say they want to "take America back". Progressives think they mean back to the 1950s, back to when men were men, women were ladies, and black folks only got into the White House by the back door. But Republicans are thinking big: they actually want to take us back to the Middle Ages, back to the "good old days" of sexual repression, regulation and punishment. Forget the economy: this election is becoming a referendum on women's bodies, since it's women (according to the Republicans' Book of Holy Misogyny) who like to have sex without wanting to get pregnant, and, if they do get pregnant, might want to have an ...
Poll: Primary Makes GOP Look Bad Post Date: 2012-03-05 16:42:35 by Brian S

As the primary election process drags on, Republican candidates look less and less appealing. A new study finds that the contest has left only one in 10 adults with a more favorable view of the Republican party, and 70 percent of those questioned could only come up with negative words to describe the primary race. "Unenthusiastic," "painful," "lesser of two evils," and "depressed" were among the words or phrases participants used. The poll specifically suggested that negative campaigning is responsible for creating a poor image of the candidates. Read it at MSNBC/New York Times Survey March 5, 2012 12:33 PM

While Republican presidential candidates battle each other ahead of Tuesday's primary in Ohio, a new polls shows President Obama ahead of all them in the Buckeye State. Obama leads Mitt Romney 50-38% in Ohio, with the other 12% undecided, according to a new NBC News/Marist Poll. The president enjoys a 50-36% lead over Rick Santorum, and a 51-36% advantage over Newt Gingrich, the poll adds. Ron Paul comes closest to Obama, trailing the president by a margin of 48-38%. It's hard to see any Republican dislodging Obama from the White House without winning Ohio. It's not as if Obama is revered in Ohio. Only 45% of registered voters in Ohio approve of Obama's job performance, ...
Cantor Endorses Romney For President Post Date: 2012-03-04 12:57:01 by Brian S

WASHINGTON Top Republican Eric Cantor endorsed Mitt Romney on Sunday for president of the United States, giving the frontrunner a boost as the primary nomination contest reaches a critical stage. Cantors endorsement, the first from a top member of the Republican congressional leadership, was seen as the strongest sign yet that the party establishment wants the increasingly bitter primary battle wrapped up soon. Romney is the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination to take on President Barack Obama in November but has faced stubborn challenges from two main rivals, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich. I cast my vote already in Virginia for Mitt Romney and Im ...
Santorum: Contraception ‘A Grievous Moral Wrong’ Post Date: 2012-03-04 12:55:07 by Brian S

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum says an amendment put forward by Senate Republicans that would have allowed any business to exclude contraceptives from health care plans was not really about birth control. The Blunt amendment was broader than that, Santorum told Fox News host Chris Wallace on Sunday. It was a conscience clause exception that existed prior to when President Obama decided that he could impose his values on people of faith, when people of faith believe that this is a grievous moral wrong. But the Blunt Amendment wasnt just talking about Catholic institutions Catholic colleges, charities it was saying any ...

Further Proof Romney Supported a National Individual Mandate In 2009 Posted by Erick Erickson As I mentioned yesterday, back in 2009 Mitt Romney took to the pages of USA Today to tell President Obama that as he came up with a healthcare plan he should consider using tax penalties as Massachusetts did or tax credits, as others have proposed to help cover the costs of health care. The tax penalties is Mitt Romneys individual mandate, a key portion the Obama Administration has credited all along as having been embraced in Obamacare. Since pointing out yesterday that, in his own words, Mitt Romney supported a national individual mandate, his ...

Big Pharmas Role in the Contraception DebateThe Senate defeat of a contraception bill is just the latest sign that the politics of birth control are back in vogue. Peter Schweizer on the hidden hand: Big Pharma. The Obama administrations mandate that all health insurance companies must provide coverage for contraceptives has set off an explosive debate about religious freedom and womens health issues. The attention has been focused on the administrations insistence that religious institutions, such as Catholic hospitals and schools, would be required to offer the benefit for their employees, even though it contradicts church teaching. But completely ignored is ...

There was an overwhelming Romney crowd there. Two people wanted Ron Paul. Two wanted Rick Santorum. The rest (about a dozen) wanted Romney. No one was for Gingrich. My guess is that this is a pretty good predictor of how the Seattle suburbs will go. We elected two delegates to the county convention (both Romney supporters) and two alternative delegates (the two Ron Paul supporters, included myself.) There were only four people that wanted to go. I become the first alternate delegate.

(03-03) 10:50 PST WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is casting the contraception controversy as an issue of women's rights, not religious freedom, seizing on what backers see as a political gift from Rush Limbaugh to firm up support from women and young voters, groups essential to his re-election hopes. He dove deep into the culture wars of American politics by rushing to defend a female law student verbally attacked by the conservative commentator, making a telephone call of support to Georgetown University's Sandra Fluke. It was nothing short of an election-year appeal to a crucial voting bloc. It also had the political benefit of forcing Republicans to choose between ...
