What Now For Ron Paul After Finishing Last In South Carolina? Post Date: 2012-01-22 18:42:57 by Brian S

Ron Paul came in fourth in the South Carolina primary election. That would have been a respectable finish for the libertarian Republican, if there had been the seven candidates in the race a couple of weeks ago. But with just four men left standing, that was dead last just 13 percent of Palmetto State Republicans backed him. After finishing third in Iowa and second in New Hampshire, that was his worse showing yet. So where does that leave Paul, the Texas congressman and physician? Right where hes always been going his own way on issues, sometimes in directions anathema to most Republicans, certainly to the evangelical Christians and other hard-right conservatives who ...
Christie: Gingrich 'Embarrassed' The GOP Post Date: 2012-01-22 17:41:45 by Brian S

1/22/12 11:16 AM EST New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Sunday dubbed Mitt Romneys showing in South Carolina clearly disappointing, but quickly turned his focus to Newt Gingrich, saying he has been an embarrassment to the party. Christie, a key Romney surrogate in his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, blasted Gingrich on NBC's "Meet the Press" for his ethics violation fine and losing the speakership in the House, saying that sometimes past is prologue. Newt Gingrich has embarrassed the party over time. Whether he'll do it again in the future I don't know, but Gov. Romney never has, Christie said ...

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Looks like weve got a new top tier. New Jerseys own Jon Stewart had great fun with that term after the Iowa straw poll last summer. He compiled a clip of all the talking heads announcing authoritatively that the crowded 2012 presidential primary field had a top tier consisting of Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry. The point to the joke was that Texas Congressman Ron Paul had finished in what would have been called a dead heat in any other poll. Yet he was being treated like the political equivalent of the 13th floor in a hotel. Even back in August, it should have been obvious to any political observer that Paul ...

Unlike Mitt Romney, who occasionally beats President Obama in general election poll match ups, Newt Gingrich trails far behind President Obama in every survey. But just how bad are Gingrich's unfavorable among the general public compared to Obama and Romney? Not every poll releases their full results, so here are the most recent favorability results I could find for Obama, Romney, and Newt. Fox News, 1/12-1/14: Obama, fav/unfav, 51%/46%, +5 Romney, fav/unfav, 45%/38%, +7 Gingrich, fav/unfav, 27%/56%, -29 CBS/NYT, 1/12-1/17: Obama, fav/unfav, 38%/45%, -7 Romney, fav/unfav, 21%/35%, -14 Gingrich, fav/unfav, 17%/49%, -32 PPP, 1/13-1/17: Obama, app/dis, 47%/50%, -3 Romney, fav/unfav, ...

Multistate Personhood Push Kindles Abortion Debate Post Date: 2012-01-20 17:43:06 by Brian S

(01-20) 13:32 PST New York (AP) -- In poll after poll, Americans say the economy is the paramount issue facing the nation, with hot-button social issues trailing far behind. Nonetheless, abortion will likely be in the election-year spotlight in a slew of states facing possible votes on sweeping abortion bans. In at least 12 states including crucial national battlegrounds such as Ohio and Virginia anti-abortion activists are seeking to place "personhood" measures on the ballot this year. The measures vary in some details, but in general they define human life as beginning with fertilization and are intended to ban virtually all abortions, even in cases of rape and ...

Yesterday we had LP endorsing Newt, today we got FR endorsing Newt. Looks like Neocon central and Neocon lite are all in for Newt. Republicans f**k it up again, just like with Harry Reid, they could have knocked him off but then they ran a candidate that my dog could beat. I guess I'll just have to resign myself to four more years of obama.
House Republicans Head to Retreat Amid Frustration, Low Ratings Post Date: 2012-01-20 12:51:21 by Brian S

House Republican leaders have a complicated task as their members gather for an annual retreat: to pull together a caucus that shares in Congresss low approval ratings and develop a legislative agenda that unifies the party. The retreat being held at a harbor-front hotel in Baltimore comes one month after U.S. House Speaker John Boehner had to capitulate in a standoff with the Democratic-controlled Senate and accept a two-month extension of a payroll tax cut deal. He is also facing frustration from House freshmen, many backed by the Tea Party movement, who say their party fell short of its goals of slashing federal spending and the governments debt. We have a very long ...

Romney Parks Millions in Cayman Islands Post Date: 2012-01-18 19:03:17 by Brian S

Although it is not apparent on his financial disclosure form, Mitt Romney has millions of dollars of his personal wealth in investment funds set up in the Cayman Islands, a notorious Caribbean tax haven. A spokesperson for the Romney campaign says Romney follows all tax laws and he would pay the same in taxes regardless of where the funds are based. As the race for the Republican nomination heats up, Mitt Romney is finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a shroud of secrecy around the details about his vast personal wealth, including, as ABC News has discovered, his investment in funds located offshore and his ability to pay a lower tax rate. "His personal finances are a ...
Romney Campaign Unloads On 'Outrageous And Destructive' Newt Gingrich Post Date: 2012-01-18 12:31:25 by Brian S

There is now polling indicating a possible Newt Gingrich surge after Monday night's debate - A Rasmussen tracking survey has him just three points behind Mitt Romney. Notably, Rick Santorum may need to start wearing a lifebelt rather than a sweater vest - he appears to be sinking fast. But the surest sign that the Romney campaign considers Gingrich the main threat here in South Carolina was a conference call just now in which top surrogates for the GOP frontrunner unloaded on the former House Speaker. It was quickly followed by web ad featuring Talent slamming Gingrich as an "Unreliable Leader" (also the title of the conference ...
Once Hot, Tea Party Goes Cold Post Date: 2012-01-17 19:13:05 by Brian S

The Tea Party is falling to pieces. In presidential, House and Senate races, the Tea Party is struggling to float viable and effective candidates, unify its base and dictate the terms of national discourse on the economy. It is a harsh comedown for a movement that two years ago sent dozens of its members to Congress, revolutionized conservative grassroots organizing and forced both parties to make the national debt and federal spending their top policy concerns. I think the Tea Partys dying out as the economys slowly getting better, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Sunday on NBCs Meet the Press. But the movements leaders are ...
Global Internet Voting Firm Buys U.S. Election Results Reporting Firm Post Date: 2012-01-17 18:37:07 by Brian S

In a major step towards global centralization of election processes, the world's dominant Internet voting company has purchased the USA's dominant election results reporting company. When you view your local or state election results on the Internet, on portals which often appear to be owned by the county elections division, in over 525 US jurisdictions you are actually redirected to a private corporate site controlled by SOE software, which operates under the name ClarityElections.com. The good news is that this firm promptly reports precinct-level detail in downloadable spreadsheet format. As reported by BlackBoxVoting.org in 2008, the bad news is that this centralizes one ...

Is South Carolina the Last Gasp for Tea Party in GOP Nomination? Post Date: 2012-01-16 15:46:49 by Brian S

With the South Carolina primary five days away, the tea party movement has accelerated its efforts to leverage what is likely its last opportunity to influence the Republican nomination process. The movement has thus far struggled to coalesce behind one candidate. Despite Mitt Romneys victories in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire and endorsements from the likes of conservative South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, he has yet to win the support of the elusive tea party. Many in the grassroots movement vehemently oppose the former Massachusetts governor, who they deem to be no different than President Obama, politically and ideologically. In a poll conducted by Judson Phillips, founder ...
