INHUMAN: NYT Props Up Mass Elderly Suicide Idea to Solve Japan’s Aging Population Post Date: 2023-02-14 21:23:31 by Charles_Byrd

The New York Times showcased an apparent disregard for human life when it chose to legitimize the idea of mass suicide as one drastic method to deal with Japans aging population. The Times pushed the extremism of Yale University Assistant Professor of Economics Yusuke Narita, who apparently doesnt mince words. I feel like the only solution is pretty clear, Narita reportedly stated during a 2021 online news program. In the end, isnt it mass suicide and mass seppuku of the elderly? Seppuku is an act of ritual disembowelment that was a code among dishonored samurai in the 19th century. The Times ...

After intense public criticism, the Canadian government is seeking to delay for one year its extension of assisted suicide to the mentally ill. It is clear more time is needed to get this right, Justice Minister David Lametti said February 2. The proposed one-year expansion is necessary to ensure that we move forward on this sensitive and complex issue in a prudent and measured way. Click for Full Text!
Capitalism Has Improved Life in India, but the Spirit of Collectivism Still Dominates Post Date: 2023-02-14 19:19:00 by Charles_Byrd

India is currently the seventh-largest country in the world with the largest youth population. There are many elements that make this country unique, the foremost being diversitydiversity of culture, race, ethnicity, and linguistics. India faced an era of colonialism under the British, who would take raw material from India at cheaper rates and import the finished products. India and Nigeria are both countries that gained independence from Britain in the same period, but India is now rising much more effectively than Nigeria. Indians saved their culture and their religion but adopted the technologies of the West, whereas Nigeria adopted Western culture and religion but failed to ...
The earthquake ought to loosen US policy on Syria Post Date: 2023-02-13 17:04:22 by Charles_Byrd

Lifeless bodies pulled from ruins, roads and bridges ripped apart, entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble these are the classic earthquake images. The latest come from Turkey and Syria, which were devastated by a fierce quake on Monday. Turkey, with a thriving economy, a well-organized state, and rich Western friends, is well equipped to rush relief to victims. In Syria the situation is quite the opposite. Syria has been under crushing economic sanctions for more than a decade. War has destroyed its cities and forced millions from their homes. Foreign forces occupy its most productive land. The economy has collapsed. Cholera is spreading. Hunger looms. Yet any person or group that ...

The global super-rich love to warn us about climate change. They love to preach about all the things well need to give up and all the sacrifices we should make. But they also love to travel in private jets and live in lavish mansions by the sea. They emit orders of magnitude more CO2 than the average person. So what explains this mismatch? Is there more to it than just hypocrisy? Click for Full Text!

The Iraqi dinars rate of exchange with the US dollar bounced off a near- term low on Friday, raising hope that months of currency free-fall may finally be coming to an end. Concerns around regional smuggling of US dollars have frustrated US economic ties with Iraq. Tightening the dollar supply in Iraq has weakened the potential for smuggling, but badly damaged Iraqs economy. Click for Full Text!
China Enforces New Cybersecurity Rules in Tibet Post Date: 2023-02-05 00:07:07 by Charles_Byrd

A new Chinese cyber law in Tibet materialized on Wednesday (Feb. 1), with the government declaring harsher punishments for anyone found to be stirring public disorder by engaging in separatist acts. The law, initially passed in 2016, was formulated to boost digital state surveillance and censorship in the region. These new measures enable the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to single out Tibetans for online activity regarded by authorities as critical of Chinese rule in the region. Click for Full Text!

National Conservatives Can't Find a Good Excuse for Viktor Orbán's Inflation Disaster Post Date: 2023-02-02 22:56:00 by Charles_Byrd

Viktor Orbán is a hero to American national conservatives. So when in January 2022 the Hungarian Prime Minister announced he would supplement price caps on fuel and mortgage rates by mandating that sugar, flour, sunflower oil, chicken breasts, pork legs, and certain milk products be sold to consumers at lower October 2021 prices, some of this antifree market cohort celebrated his decisive action to "protect families" from inflation. "But, but, but, what would Milton Friedman say!" tweeted Compact magazine editor Sohrab Ahmari, mocking advocates of market economics. This was "the party of the state for the win." Well, we know what Friedman would ...
Is the Japanese Low Inflation–Low Interest Rate Model at an End? Post Date: 2023-02-01 16:43:38 by Charles_Byrd

The macroeconomic situation in Japan seems to be coming to a head. When the Bank of Japan, under its President Haruhiko Kuroda, announced on December 20, 2022, that it would raise its interest rate ceiling on ten- year Japanese government bonds from 0.25 percent to 0.50 percent, share prices in Tokyo plummeted and the Japanese yen appreciated sharply. The Kuroda shock, which in the eyes of some observers heralded a turning point in Japans thirty-year low, zero, and negative interest rate policy, sent shock waves through the international financial markets. Meanwhile, the markets are betting against the Bank of Japan being able to keep its self-imposed interest rate ...

Japans Prime Minister has warned that his country will fall over an economic and social cliff unless it reverses its population decline. Our country is on the brink of being unable to maintain the functions of society, said Fumio Kishida at the beginning of this years Diet session. Mr Kishidas apocalyptic statement is by no means news. Japans population has been shrinking for years. Rural towns are being abandoned. The number of people in nursing homes is constantly rising. Schools are closing because there are no children to fill the classrooms. Click for Full Text!

Authoritarian Chinese leader Xi Jinping participated in the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit last week, encouraging the Western Hemisphere to adopt the Belt and Road Chinese debt-trap scheme and stating that China views the region as a key partner in enhancing solidarity. CELAC is a left-leaning platform that can be likened to the Organization of American States (OAS). It is presently conducting a head-of-state conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, hosted by socialist President Alberto Fernandez. Argentina is a Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner, as are various other members of the coalition. Click for Full Text!

Even as the National Health Service struggles with a shortage of doctors, the British government has ordered medical schools to hold to a previously announced cap and admit no more than 7,500 medical students this year. The cap was put in place to limit the cost of educating medical students. It costs the government £160,000 (about $200,000) to educate each new physician. Click for Full Text!

Health authorities in Chinas southwestern province of Sichuan will permit unmarried individuals to have children, raise a family, and qualify for benefits previously allocated only to married couples in the most recent attempt to boost the countrys plummeting birth rate. Although the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mandates that only married women are lawfully permitted to give birth, record low marriage and birth rates in recent years have prompted the provincial authorities to revise a 2019 rule to include singles who want to have children. Taliban terrorists detained three Afghans and two Chinese citizens suspected of trying to smuggle lithium across the Chinese border, the Afghan news outlet Khaama Press reported. Various Afghan and foreign reports about the incident failed to name the men in question, and did not detail any more information about the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)s possible culpability in either the smuggling or the arrests. One report, quoting local Taliban authorities, said that the men were caught with 1,000 metric tons of rocks with lithium. The incident took place in Jalalabad, on Afghanistans eastern border with China. Click for Full Text!

For years, big tech companies like Apple and Tesla have assured the customers of their glossy stores and showrooms that all their goods are ethically sourced and sold. But a new series of images taken from inside mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where 90 percent of the world's cobalt is mined and used to make the batteries that power our tech-led lives, raise uncomfortable questions. Russia’s Intentions Are Clarifying Post Date: 2023-01-29 20:21:38 by Charles_Byrd

We forget, perhaps, that from 1 March 1950 the Soviet rouble was on a gold standard at 4 roubles 45 kopecks for 1 gram of pure gold until 1961, when Khrushchev devalued it and refixed it to the dollar. Stalin had been a signatory to the Bretton Woods agreement but refused to join it and make the rouble subservient to the dollar as its intermediary for a gold standard. The Soviets rouble was eventually driven off its gold standard by disastrous economic policies. Faced with reforming the command economy system and accepting the economic failures of communism, in 1961 the currency had to give way. This is worth mentioning to remind us that the Russians are no strangers to a gold ...
