The CEO of TikTok declined to comment Thursday when asked if China was persecuting Uyghur Muslims during a Congressional hearing, instead saying he was there to talk about the controversial app. “Do you agree that the Chinese government has persecuted the Uyghur population?” Republican Rep. Debbie Lesko of Arizona asked Shou Zi Chew during the hearing held by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Click for Full Text!

Debates in Knesset on Judicial Review Invoke Federalists and Antifederalists

In their effort to define the limits of the constitutional authority of the country’s judiciary, lawmakers in Israel are referring to how that subject was addressed by the Federalists and Antifederalists during the ratification debates in the United States. As the Knesset, Israel’s unicameral legislative body, seeks to refine, and perhaps restore, the original constitutional structure of their country, the names of Publius and Brutus are being invoked by partisans on both sides of the debate on judicial authority to review the acts of the Knesset. French politicians are being threatened with the guillotine if they attempt to protect President Emmanuel Macron’s government from a pair of no-confidence votes in Parliament, according to a handful of MPs who claimed to have received death threats over the weekend. Police told French media that hundreds of such messages had been sent to lawmakers ahead of Monday’s vote. MP Agnes Evren, vice president of the Republican Party, posted an image of a death threat that she said was sent to her on Sunday, which vowed “your heads will fall,” calling for “the guillotine for your face” for supporting Macron. The collapse of the American Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) poses no “significant risk” of contagion to the European Union (EU), the Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni declared in an interview prior to a Eurogroup meeting of the bloc’s finance ministers on March 13. “The overall situation is less negative than expected,” Commissioner Gentiloni told reporters, alluding to a comparatively quick recovery from Covid-19, among other issues. Another European country just dealt a devastating blow to the transgender movement

The Norwegian Healthcare Investigation Board (NHIB) is the latest European body to announce that the so-called “affirmative model of care” for gender dysphoric minors is not supported by evidence and is advising against the use of cross-sex hormones, puberty blockers, and “sex change” surgeries for minors. The NHIB recommended that these “treatments” be classified as experimental and noted that the spike in children identifying as transgender is concerning. “The knowledge base, especially research-based knowledge, for gender confirmation treatment (hormonal and surgical) is insufficient,” the report notes. “Little is known about the long-term ...

Towards Tri-Multipolarity: The Golden Billion, The Sino-Russo Entente, & The Global South
Post Date: 2023-03-14 23:30:14 by Charles_Byrd

The global systemic transition’s impending evolution towards tri- multipolarity could see the US-led West’s Golden Billion, the Sino-Russo Entente, and the de facto Indian-led Global South becoming the most prominent poles in International Relations, below which would be rising powers and regional groups. All actors would balance one another by multi- aligning within and between their respective levels, which might result in stabilizing global affairs much more than the prior unipolar and bi- multipolar orders did. International Relations are hurtling towards tripolarity at an astounding pace as a result of the dramatic events that unfolded over the past year and especially the ...

Tractors Head to The Hague for Farmers' Protest

Thousands of farmers and anti-establishment demonstrators protested Saturday in a park in The Hague against Dutch government plans to reduce nitrate emissions, while climate activists angry at what they call state support for the fossil fuel industry broke through police lines and blocked a major road elsewhere in the city for hours. The simultaneous demonstrations a few kilometers (miles) from each other took place days before Dutch voters go to the polls in provincial elections. The elections on Wednesday indirectly also indirectly select members of the national parliament’s upper house and could have an effect on proposals for reducing nitrate pollution. France faced a seventh day of demonstrations on Saturday against President Emmanuel Macron's unpopular pension reform plans amid ongoing rolling strikes which have affected refineries, public transport and garbage collections. A coalition of French unions, maintaining a rare show of unity since the protest movement was launched at the end of January, hopes to keep up to pressure on the government to withdraw the reform, whose key measure is a two-year extension of the retirement age to 64. BBC Crisis Mounts Over Free Speech

The BBC was forced to scrap much of its weekend sports programming as the network scrambled to stem an escalating crisis over its suspension of soccer host Gary Lineker for comments criticizing the British government's new asylum policy. As a growing number of English Premier League players and BBC presenters rallied to Lineker’s support and refused to appear on the airwaves on Saturday, Britain’s national broadcaster faced allegations of political bias and suppressing free speech, as well as praise from some Conservative politicians. China’s trade contracted again in January and February as U.S. and European demand weakened in the face of interest rate hikes, adding to pressure on official efforts to revive economic growth following the end of anti-virus controls. Exports sank 6.8% from a year earlier to $506.3 billion, an improvement over December’s 10.1% decline, customs data showed Tuesday. Imports fell 10.2% to $389.4 billion, deepening December’s 7.3% contraction. Click for Full Text!

Belgian women euthanised for extreme psychological suffering

Wherever euthanasia is debated, the clincher argument is that it will spare a patient agonising pain in a terminal illness. But as these cases from Belgium suggest, euthanasia deaths are being used as an escape route from the aftermath of crime by both victims and criminals. And women may be particularly susceptible. Sixteen years to the day when five of her children died, on February 28, 56-year-old Genevieve Lhermitte, was euthanised. Euthanasia for unbearable psychological suffering has become normalised in Belgium, but this case was different. Click for Full Text!

The Case for Prohibition—and Its Violence—as UN Rights Breach
Post Date: 2023-03-03 02:04:18 by Charles_Byrd

It’s well documented that banning drugs leads to violence. But a new paper, published in the International Journal of Drug Policy, argues that the predictable proliferation of this violence—and its effect on people around the globe—could be considered a violation of the fundamental right to life and safety, as defined by the United Nations. The United States’ alcohol Prohibition in the 1920s is often cited as an example of what happens when you remove regulation from a lucrative market. Groups operating outside the law are heavily incentivized to participate in the trade and to protect their market shares—by whatever means they can, in the absence of a rules-based ...

Muslim Politician With Possible Extremist Links Poised to Become Scotland’s Next Leader

Following Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s February 15 announcement of her resignation, the race for both the leadership of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and Scotland as a country began. Although political pundits have singled out Cabinet Secretary Kate Forbes as a potential successor, Forbes’ Presbyterian beliefs and opposition to LGBTQ+ and other liberal ideologies have provoked leftist assaults on her character and ability to lead the nation. Thus, another very likely candidate to succeed Sturgeon has been Scottish Health Minister Humza Yousaf, who likely has links both to the Muslim Brotherhood and other extremist groups. For eight years, Nicola Sturgeon’s ...

Following the killing of seven Hindus back in January amid two attacks in Dhangri village in India’s Kashmir region, the country’s authorities have brought back a government-funded militia — providing thousands of villagers, including some teenagers, arms and training. Officially known as the “Village Defense Group,” the militia was first founded in the 1990s to provide a first line of defense against anti- Indian fighters in isolated Himalayan villages where the government had difficulty sending aid rapidly. As the euthanasia program in Canada comes under increasing international scrutiny, Canadians living with disabilities are speaking out to show how they have been pressured into assisted suicide or euthanasia. And the hashtag they’re using is starting to go viral. A woman identifying herself as Dr. T kicked off the “I Am The Face Of MAID” campaign with a tweet arguing that the government would rather kill her than treat her illness. “I am the face of #MAID (assisted-death) in Canada. As a single, 50 yr old female with a genetic condition and a disability pension I will only cost the ‘system,’” she wrote. “I would be approved for untreatable pain if I ...

Pope nationalizes Vatican assets, property in new reform

Pope Francis has essentially nationalized all assets and property owned by Vatican departments and affiliated institutions, declaring them to be sovereign patrimony owned by the Holy See and not any individual or office. The action outlined in a new law published Thursday marks Francis' latest initiative to centralize Vatican assets so they can be managed properly, following years of mismanagement that led to huge losses and, prosecutors allege, criminal wrongdoing. On February 13, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó vehemently slammed the European Parliament, claiming, among other things, that the institution lacks any credibility amid its recent corruption scandals. In an interview with Hungary’s Kossuth Rádió, Szijjártó said that “The credibility of the European Parliament is practically zero,” elaborating that “the latest corruption issues have clearly shown that we are speaking about one of the world’s most corrupt organizations,” the news portal Vadhajtsok reported. Nicola Sturgeon’s woke authoritarianism

Gradually, then suddenly. That is how the political career of Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon – a regrettably towering figure of modern British politics – seems to have crumbled. She announced her resignation earlier today, saying at Bute House that she will step down as soon as her successor is chosen. Her humiliating climbdown over her gender reforms, sparked by the sickening ‘Isla Bryson’ revelations, was undoubtedly the immediate cause for her downfall. But in truth her political project has been on a collision course with political reality and common sense for some time. Click for Full Text!

Poor People in Developing Countries Find Alternatives to Commercial Banking
Post Date: 2023-02-21 02:31:52 by Charles_Byrd

Banking is a complicated process for working-class people who fail to comply with anti–money laundering regulations. Know your customer (KYC) requirements mandate prospective clients to provide their source of funding and possible employment history. Such policies make it difficult for working-class entrepreneurs to formalize and access funding. By restricting poorer people to informality, KYC requirements sap the growth potential of small businesses. However, the ingenuity of working-class entrepreneurs has allowed them to compete by creating an alternative to the financial system. Due to the success of rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCA), informal entrepreneurs have ...
