I first met historian Ralph Raico at a Cato Institute Summer Seminar in 1990. Like George Walsh, Raico was an old-school scholar who published modestly but knew extravagantly. I hung out with Raico at two or three seminars, and he amazed me. I finally got around to seeing the Oppenheimer biopic this weekend, fully expecting to be met with debunked talking points about how dropping nuclear bombs on Japanese cities was absolutely necessary. Shanghai-based media company Haixun Press is placing articles on over 30 American news websites to promote China, according to a Monday report by cybersecurity firm Mandiant. The firm’s full name is Shanghai Yihuan Cultural Communication Co., Ltd. and it distributes news articles worldwide to reach specific audiences, including the U.S., according to its website. On Thursday morning CNN published a story citing a large increase in the infant-mortality rate in Texas. Data obtained from the Texas Department of State Health Services via a public-records request showed that in 2022 the number of infant deaths in Texas purportedly increased by 11.5 percent. Donald Trump spoke out Monday and over the weekend about what he sees as election interference as he faces a growing number of criminal charges with the potential for additional charges against the former president over his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot and his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
