The Impossibility of Equality Post Date: 2023-03-03 02:20:27 by Charles_Byrd

Probably the most common ethical criticism of the market economy is that it fails to achieve the goal of equality. Equality has been championed on various economic grounds, such as minimum social sacrifice or the diminishing marginal utility of money (see the chapter on taxation above). But in recent years economists have recognized that they cannot justify egalitarianism by economics, that they ultimately need an ethical basis for equality. Click for Full Text!

The Problems With Disney and Florida Post Date: 2023-03-03 02:16:05 by Charles_Byrd

The core of the problems with Disney and Florida is the American addiction to corporatism. This is the use of government power for the benefit of the governments patrons. Stated differently, it is a symbiotic relationship between the government and a private business that gives government officials corporate largesse and the private business a near monopoly. It is capturing the power of the state to increase private wealth at the expense of others. Corporatism is immoral because it bribes the state to give government power to a patron. It is economically counterproductive because it stifles competition. It is unconstitutional because it violates equal protection and, in the Florida ...
Ohio Woman Says Cops Broke Her Wrist for Recording During Traffic Stop Post Date: 2023-03-03 02:11:53 by Charles_Byrd

A new lawsuit alleges that an Ohio woman suffered a broken wrist and other injuries after being violently arrested during a traffic stop, in part due to filming the police who pulled her over. In February 2020, Amanda Mills was pulled over for speeding in Walton Hills, a small town outside Cleveland, Ohio. According to the suit, a police officer, identified in the lawsuit only as "Officer Schmidt" exited his cruiser "irate" and "screaming." Nervous, Mills began recording the encounter. Schmidt ordered Mills to get out of her vehicle. According to the suit, "Amanda asked 'why?' without making any other statement or any sudden movement. At this ...
SCOTUS Questions the Government's Absurdly Broad Definition of 'Aggravated Identity Theft' Post Date: 2023-03-03 02:10:21 by Charles_Byrd

Back in 2004, Congress decided to tackle the problem of "identity theft." It was responding to much-publicized cases in which criminals obtained credit cards in other people's names, sticking them with the resulting bills and hurting their credit ratings. But instead of focusing on that paradigmatic situation and crimes of a similar nature, Congress passed the Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act, which prescribed a two-year mandatory minimum sentence for "aggravated identity theft." The law's definition of that crime is so broad that it can be read to cover myriad minor offenses that are nothing like identity theft as it is generally understood. Naturally, ...
Decades of Subsidies Have Made the Essentials of Middle-Class Life Increasingly Difficult To Afford Post Date: 2023-03-03 02:08:35 by Charles_Byrd

Perhaps the simplest way to diagnose the problem with American politics right now is that it is out of touch. Democrats and Republicans have spent the better part of the last decade arguing about partisan peccadillos and culture war obsessions, while middle-class concerns have languished. And thus a new movement has risen mostly but not exclusively on the technocratic center-left, intent on refocusing liberal politics in general and Democratic politicians in particular on workaday economic concerns. This movement has many strains and individual obsessions, but it is united by a shared thesis: The basics of middle-class lifeespecially but not only housing, education, and health ...
The Case for Prohibition—and Its Violence—as UN Rights Breach Post Date: 2023-03-03 02:04:18 by Charles_Byrd

Its well documented that banning drugs leads to violence. But a new paper, published in the International Journal of Drug Policy, argues that the predictable proliferation of this violenceand its effect on people around the globecould be considered a violation of the fundamental right to life and safety, as defined by the United Nations. The United States alcohol Prohibition in the 1920s is often cited as an example of what happens when you remove regulation from a lucrative market. Groups operating outside the law are heavily incentivized to participate in the trade and to protect their market sharesby whatever means they can, in the absence of a rules-based ...

Washington and NATO have rapidly escalated their war with Russia. The White House appears to have blown up the Nord Stream pipelines in a blatant act of war against Russia, not to mention Germany and other European allies. The CIA is reportedly conducting sabotage attacks on Russian infrastructure and the Pentagon has tacitly endorsed Kievs drone strikes hundreds of miles deep inside the Russian mainland. Over one hundred years ago, Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises discovered what causes the boom-bust business cycle. As Mises explained, the boom is caused by central and commercial banks creating money out of thin air. This lowers interest rates, which encourages businesses to borrow this newly created money to fund capital- intensive investment projects. Click for Full Text!
Market Morons Finally Forced to Face Reality Post Date: 2023-03-03 01:56:44 by Charles_Byrd

Investors have been slower than a tank of turtles swimming in molasses when it comes to grasping reality, but they may be getting the message on inflation and the Feds fight ahead at last. That said, one should never underestimate the resolve of people to enshrine their wishes as unholy doctrines in order to continue chasing the phantasms of their greed like drunken gamblers in a smoke-clouded casino. This bear market now well over a year long has produced many rallies that were exemplary in demonstrating that unattractive quality of the human condition. News stories across multiple categories of The Daily Doom last Friday screamed the message of inflation how ...

According to the Boston Herald, Committee members on Sunday voted unanimously, 27-0, to endorse a statement repudiating chairman Michael Hugos comments, but the committee opposed a motion to add an agenda item to a future meeting to discuss whether Hugo should be removed. Muslim Politician With Possible Extremist Links Poised to Become Scotland’s Next Leader Post Date: 2023-03-03 01:50:34 by Charles_Byrd

Following Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeons February 15 announcement of her resignation, the race for both the leadership of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and Scotland as a country began. Although political pundits have singled out Cabinet Secretary Kate Forbes as a potential successor, Forbes Presbyterian beliefs and opposition to LGBTQ+ and other liberal ideologies have provoked leftist assaults on her character and ability to lead the nation. Thus, another very likely candidate to succeed Sturgeon has been Scottish Health Minister Humza Yousaf, who likely has links both to the Muslim Brotherhood and other extremist groups. For eight years, Nicola Sturgeons ...
Biden Admin Using CHIPS Act to Force Taxpayers to Fund Daycare for Tech Workers Post Date: 2023-03-03 01:48:41 by Charles_Byrd

The Biden administration is using the recently enacted CHIPS Act to force Americans to subsidize childcare for people employed in the manufacturing of semiconductors. Rather than seeking for some sort of spending bill to work its way through Congress as is required by the U.S. Constitution the Biden Commerce Department is using the money being offered to the semiconductor industry to surreptitiously spend taxpayer funds to set up childcare facilities at all the factories receiving money from this latest act of the executive. Over the course of many evenings in 1952 and 1953, when I was a kindergartner, my family gathered around a hand-me-down TV in the Chicago housing project where we lived to watch Victory at Sea. With stirring music and solemn narration, this 26-part documentary produced by NBC offered an inspiring account of World War II as a righteous conflict in which freedom had triumphed over evil, in large part thanks to the exertions of the United States. The country had waged a peoples war, fought by millions of ordinary citizens who had answered the call of duty. The wars outcome testified to the strength of American democracy. Here was history in all its seductive and terrible ...
Occupational Licensing: Giving Government Power Over Prosperity Post Date: 2023-03-01 18:05:31 by Charles_Byrd

The state Legislature of Virginia is poised to approve a bill that would grant comity to occupational licenses issued by other states. This event might not sound particularly newsworthy, but anything that takes prosperity out of the hands of the government and places it back in the hands of the people is good news for liberty and those who cherish it. Less than two weeks after a driver rammed into one of the bedrooms of his Austin, Texas, home, Chris Newby got a letter from the city telling him his house was now in violation of city code and that he had 30 days to get it repaired or he faced $2,000 a day in fines. The letter was dated on the day the driver smashed into Newby's home. City officials said the building inspector was notified about the accident by the fire department and that it is city policy to send such letters after a house is damaged. Click for Full Text!
The US/NATO War Against Russia Post Date: 2023-03-01 18:00:41 by Charles_Byrd

The US/NATO war against Russia via proxy Ukraine is one of the most ridiculous, unnecessary, contrived wars ever devised. It was initiated and engineered by the United States with two main objectives: 1) to weaken and destroy Russia, and 2) to make Americas European allies (vassal states) more dependent economically on the USA. This situation is extremely dangerous as certain elements in the Washington political establishment would like to escalate the conflict to a nuclear war. Click for Full Text!

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered officials to tighten security on the border with Ukraine, after several drones targeted areas deep inside the Russian territory. Putin made the remarks during a speech at a meeting of the Federal Security Service (FSB) board in the capital Moscow on Tuesday, without referring to any specific attacks. However, his comments came hours after drones, which the Kremlin said were launched by Ukraine, hit several regions in southern and western Russia. Click for Full Text!

To those who don't remember the events of September 11, 2001, it can be difficult to convey the sense of dread and uncertainty that followed. As horrible as the attacks were, many of us wondered: What's next? It was in this context that Congress quickly passed, and President George W. Bush signed, such legislation as the USA PATRIOT Act, less than two months after 9/11. While that law was drafted with the best of intentions strengthening the nation's defenses against potential future attacksin practice, authorities overwhelmingly use it to circumvent Americans' basic freedoms like privacy and due process. Peter Schiff: History Shows It’s Impossible to Put the Inflation Genie Back in the Bottle Post Date: 2023-03-01 17:51:05 by Charles_Byrd

The markets basically shrugged off the hotter-than-expected inflation data for January. Most people remain convinced that the Fed can easily get price inflation back to 2% without wrecking the economy. But in his podcast, Peter explains that stuffing that inflation genie back into the bottle is a lot harder than most people seem to think. Both the CPI and the PPI came in hotter than expected in January. Click for Full Text!
Why Austrian Economists Are Not Employed as Policy Advisers Post Date: 2023-03-01 17:49:38 by Charles_Byrd

In the (1955) edition of his top-selling Economics text, Paul Samuelson claimed economists had finally determined how economies worked. As he put it: In recent years 90 percent of American economists have stopped being Keynesian economists or anti-Keynesian economists. Instead they have worked towards a synthesis of whatever is valuable in older economics and in modern theories of income determination. The result might be called neo-classical synthesis and is accepted in its broad outlines by all but about 5 percent of extreme left wing and right wing writers. Click for Full Text!
