War over the border: White House says Kyl is lying about security; AZ senator stands his ground By: Byron York Chief Political Correspondent 06/21/10 1:25 PM EDT A few days ago, Arizona Republican Sen. Jon Kyl told a town meeting in North Phoenix that President Obama personally told him that the administration will not secure the U.S.-Mexico border because doing so would make it politically difficult to pass comprehensive immigration reform. “I met with the president in the Oval Office, just the two of us,” Kyl said. “Here’s what the president said. The problem is, he said, if we secure the border, then you all won’t have any reason to support comprehensive ...

Where are the promised border troops? By E. J. Montini, Columnist - Jun. 20, 2010 08:25 PM The Arizona Republic . So where are the troops? Last month, President Barack Obama promised to deploy 1,200 National Guard troops to the Southwest border. Sen. John McCain said that 1,200 was "not good enough" and got the Senate Armed Services Committee to approve 6,000 troops. At least that is what we are being told, again and again, in a McCain campaign commercial. So when do the soldiers get here? Back when the president made his announcement, Gov. Jan Brewer said, "My signing of Senate Bill 1070 has clearly ignited the talk of action in Washington for the people of Arizona ...

Further details are expected from the meeting on plans for deploying 1,200 National Guard troops to border states to help with border security and Obama's request to Congress for $500 million for border security. Obama is not planning to attend.

Fired-up Republican activists in no mood for compromises threw out their party chairwoman Saturday, then bucked Texas Gov. Rick Perry by pushing for a crackdown on illegal immigration similar to Arizona's new law. Some delegates at the Republican state convention also called for a nonbinding resolution calling on House Republicans to oust their own speaker, Rep. Joe Straus of San Antonio, considered too moderate for many of the bedrock conservatives meeting in Dallas this weekend. Convention organizers ruled the Straus resolution out of order. While the convention began Friday with scripted unity and Democrat-bashing speeches, its final hours were marked by division and heated debates ...

A new report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) finds that as a result of immigration, California now has the least-educated labor force of any state. Historically, California was not a state with a disproportionately large unskilled population, like Appalachia or parts of the South. However, immigration has transformed the state. The ordinance does not regulate the content of a day laborer's speech, only the location, Judge Sandra Ikuta said in the majority opinion.
