NATO Chief Says Russia Relations Can’t Be Repaired Even After Fighting

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that trust between the West and Russia has been “destroyed” and that relations couldn’t return to normal even after the fighting ended in Ukraine, CNBC reported on Monday. “Even if the fighting ends, we will not return to some kind of normal, friendly, relationship with Russia. Trust has been destroyed,” Stoltenberg said. “I think the war has had long-lasting consequences for the relationship with Russia.” Click for Full Text!

The British Royal Marines have carried out high-risk special operations on the ground in Ukraine, according to the former head of the elite unit, who said UK commandos have been deployed to the country on more than one occasion this year. Writing in the Royal Navy’s official magazine, the Globe and Laurel, Lieutenant General Robert Magowan said some 350 Marines were sent to Ukraine for two missions since January, starting with an operation to help relocate UK diplomatic staff to Poland just ahead of Russia’s invasion. How Will the Blob React if Ukraine Faces Defeat?

Given Ukraine’s surprisingly effective counteroffensive against Russian forces in the autumn of 2022, there has been an increasing focus among Western officials and their media allies about Russia’s probable response to an overall Ukrainian triumph in the war. There has been far less discussion about how the United States and its European partners will respond if military fortunes change and NATO’s proxy faces definitive defeat. However, such a discussion is essential to avoid making a serious policy blunder. Western foreign policy experts are split about the Kremlin’s probable response if its military venture in Ukraine implodes. Realists are concerned that Russian ...

The War Caucus Always Wins

THE DOMINANT POLITICAL STORY emanating from Washington, D.C., these days centers around the battles between the Trumpist movement and the bipartisan “adults in the room” caucus — the Democratic Party and fragments of the Republican Party consisting of lawmakers and politicians who have affirmed the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. Often obscured by the media focus on this clash is the enduring influence of a long-standing faction of the U.S. power structure: the bipartisan war caucus. Throughout the Trump and Biden administrations, the U.S. has been on an escalating trajectory toward a new Cold War featuring the prime adversaries from the ...

The US on Friday announced a new $275 million arms package for Ukraine that includes ammunition for the HIMARS rocket systems, marking the 27th drawdown from US military stockpiles for the Ukrainians. Announcing the new package, the Pentagon said that the US has pledged over $19.3 billion in military equipment for Ukraine since Russia invaded on February 24. The funds for the new arms are being pulled from the previous Ukraine aid spending bill that was approved in September. Click for Full Text!

Pentagon Gives Tacit Support for Ukrainian Drone Attacks Deep Inside Russia
Post Date: 2022-12-12 16:53:09 by Charles_Byrd

The Pentagon has given its tacit endorsement of Ukrainian attacks inside Russian territory and no longer fears such operations could lead to a “dramatic” Russian escalation, The Times reported on Friday, citing unnamed US defense officials. The US position appears to only be based on the fact that up to this point, Russia hasn’t responded to attacks on its territory with nuclear weapons or by attacking NATO countries. Finland’s foreign minister said Thursday that while there’s been progress alleviating Turkey’s concerns on Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO bids, there is still no “clear date” on when Ankara will ratify their memberships. “What we are still missing is the clear date, a clear plan for the Turkish parliament to deal with this issue,” Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said at a press conference with his Swedish counterpart and Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington. Guantánamo: Will America's Forever Prison Finally Close On Biden's Watch?

As of December 8, 2022, Guantánamo Bay detention facility—a prison offshore of American justice and built for those detained in this country's never-ending Global War on Terror—has been open for nearly 21 years (or, to be precise, 7,627 days). Thirteen years ago, I published a book, The Least Worst Place: Guantanamo's First 100 Days. It told the story of the military officers and staff who received the prison's initial detainees at that U.S. naval base on the island of Cuba early in 2002. Like the hundreds of prisoners that followed, they would largely be held without charges or trial for years on end. Click for Full Text!

A group of House Democrats on Thursday released a statement welcoming Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) plan to bring the Yemen War Powers Resolution to the floor of the Senate for a vote next week. The resolution would end US support for the Saudi war and blockade on Yemen that, according to the UN, has killed at least 377,000 people, more than half of which were children under the age of five. NATO’s Handling of Ukraine Crisis May End in Disaster – MEP

Irish MEP Clare Daly accused NATO of bringing “terror, death, lawlessness [and] rape” to Libya, and claimed that the US-led bloc’s strategy in Ukraine will yield similar results. Daly made her declaration after voting against a resolution calling for greater EU involvement in Libya. Daly, along with fellow Irish leftist Mick Wallace, voted last week against a resolution that called on the EU to play “a more active role” in rebuilding war-torn Libya, including by setting up police and military units under the command of the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA). Blowing Up the World When So Little Is at Stake

In last week’s column, I discussed Christophers Coyne’s excellent book In Search of Monsters to Destroy, a cogent account of America’s endeavor to build a “liberal” informal empire. Coyne shows the inherent contradiction of using brutal means to achieve humane values. This week, I’d like to discuss an even more deplorable part of American foreign policy, one which threatens the world with destruction. During the Cold War, the United States risked nuclear war with the Soviet Union; and though the Cold War ended long ago, American support for Ukraine in its war with Russia again risks atomic war. The dangers inherent in American policy have been discussed by ...

The House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday narrowly voted down a bill that would audit the tens of billions of dollars that Congress has approved to spend on the war in Ukraine. The bill was rejected by the Democrat-led panel in a vote of 26 to 22. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and a small group of Republicans who oppose US aid to Ukraine, but it received strong support from more hawkish Republicans. Click for Full Text!

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Tuesday that Finland must declare an end to the arms embargo it imposed on Turkey in order for the Nordic nation to join NATO. Both Finland and Sweden placed export controls on Turkey in 2019 in response to a Turkish incursion into northeast Syria against Kurdish militants. Hungary on Tuesday blocked a massive EU aid package for Ukraine worth 18 billion euros ($18.9 billion), angering other members of the bloc. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest is not against sending aid to Ukraine but objects to how the EU wants to do it. The 18 billion euro plan would require all 27 EU members to jointly borrow the funds, something Hungary has previously said it’s against. Click for Full Text!

Turkey has set a deadline for the withdrawal of the US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from areas of northern Syria near the Turkish border, a Turkish source told Al Jazeera. Both the US and Russia are trying to avert a Turkish invasion of northern Syria, and the source said Ankara has asked Washington and Moscow to press the SDF to withdraw. Turkey wants the SDF to leave the cities of Manbij, Tal Rifaat, and Kobane within two weeks, or it will launch a ground operation. Click for Full Text!

Russian Oil Price Cap, EU Sanctions Come Into Effect

An EU embargo on Russian oil and a Western-imposed price cap on Russian oil came into effect on Monday as Moscow said it is preparing a response to the policies. The US led the push to impose a price cap on Russian oil, and the EU agreed to set it at $60 per barrel, or at least 5% below market value. The EU embargo on Russian oil also prohibits issuing insurance for Russian oil shipments unless the crude is sold at or below the cap. Click for Full Text!
