NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that trust between the West and Russia has been “destroyed” and that relations couldn’t return to normal even after the fighting ended in Ukraine, CNBC reported on Monday. “Even if the fighting ends, we will not return to some kind of normal, friendly, relationship with Russia. The British Royal Marines have carried out high-risk special operations on the ground in Ukraine, according to the former head of the elite unit, who said UK commandos have been deployed to the country on more than one occasion this year. Writing in the Royal Navy’s official magazine, the Globe and Laurel, Lieutenant General Robert Magowan said some 350 Marines were sent to Ukraine for two missions since January, starting with an operation to help relocate UK diplomatic staff to Poland just ahead of Russia’s invasion. The US on Friday announced a new $275 million arms package for Ukraine that includes ammunition for the HIMARS rocket systems, marking the 27th drawdown from US military stockpiles for the Ukrainians. Irish MEP Clare Daly accused NATO of bringing “terror, death, lawlessness [and] rape” to Libya, and claimed that the US-led bloc’s strategy in Ukraine will yield similar results. Daly made her declaration after voting against a resolution calling for greater EU involvement in Libya. The House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday narrowly voted down a bill that would audit the tens of billions of dollars that Congress has approved to spend on the war in Ukraine. The bill was rejected by the Democrat-led panel in a vote of 26 to 22. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Tuesday that Finland must declare an end to the arms embargo it imposed on Turkey in order for the Nordic nation to join NATO. Both Finland and Sweden placed export controls on Turkey in 2019 in response to a Turkish incursion into northeast Syria against Kurdish militants. Hungary on Tuesday blocked a massive EU aid package for Ukraine worth 18 billion euros ($18.9 billion), angering other members of the bloc. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest is not against sending aid to Ukraine but objects to how the EU wants to do it. The United States and Australia announced on December 6 that they would invite Japanese troops to three-way rotations, pledging a show of unity against the growing Chinese military. Turkey has set a deadline for the withdrawal of the US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from areas of northern Syria near the Turkish border, a Turkish source told Al Jazeera. Both the US and Russia are trying to avert a Turkish invasion of northern Syria, and the source said Ankara has asked Washington and Moscow to press the SDF to withdraw. On Tuesday, Poland’s defense minister said that the country would accept a German offer to deploy a Patriot air defense missile system on Polish territory, changing course after Warsaw rejected the idea. Germany made the offer after a Ukrainian air defense missile landed in Polish territory, killing two people. An EU embargo on Russian oil and a Western-imposed price cap on Russian oil came into effect on Monday as Moscow said it is preparing a response to the policies. The US led the push to impose a price cap on Russian oil, and the EU agreed to set it at $60 per barrel, or at least 5% below market value. The EU embargo on Russian oil also prohibits issuing insurance for Russian oil shipments unless the crude is sold at or below the cap. Click for Full Text!
