(AP Photo/Nick Gonzales) SEATTLE - A Seattle police spokesman says the department is "embarrassed" after officers left a police rifle unattended on top of a parked patrol car in a busy downtown area. Sgt. Sean Whitcomb said the department has launched an investigation and will be reviewing its policies that deal with securing weapons. Two good Samaritans spotted the rifle on the parked car, Whitcomb said. One flagged down bicycle officers to alert them, and the other tracked down the driver and told the officer a rifle was ...

COMMENTARY | According to The New York Times, the FBI just raided a data center in Virginia and seized many of its servers, causing websites owned by "tens of clients" to go offline -- including those belonging to people who hadn't broken a law, and were not suspected of any crime. It may seem silly to get upset about the police taking down websites you don't use. A certain quote may come to mind, though, as we look at other ways that the police in America abuse their power. Tasering nonviolent people to death A 72-year-old woman named Kathryn Winkfein got tasered not too long ago after she lost her temper at the cop who pulled her over. Her offense? Policing the Police: The Apps That Let You Spy on the Cops

After the recent Vancouver riots, it became clear that the world is surveiling itself at an unprecedented scale. Angry citizens gave police one million photos and 1,000 hours of video footage to help them track down the rioters. If we aren't living in a surveillance state run by the government, we're certainly conducting a huge surveillance experiment on each other. Which is what makes two new apps, CopRecorder and OpenWatch, and their Web component, OpenWatch.net, so interesting. They are the brainchildren of Rich Jones, a 23-year-old Boston University graduate who describes himself as "pretty much a hacker to the core." Flush with cash and time from a few successful ...

Choice Administration Jobs, Contracts, Meetings for Obama’s Megadonors Many of the donors who raised large amounts of money for President Barack Obama’s 2008 election have since landed excellent jobs with the Administration. One of President Barack Obama’s first campaign promises during the 2008 election was that he would work to eliminate the influence of moneyed political players, who had “turned our government into a game only they can afford to play.” Yet some of the President’s biggest campaign donors have since landed choice jobs, contracts and private meetings with the Obama Administration. An iWatch News investigation into the White House’s ...

Jewish Federations of North America officials met today at the White House with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. The meeting, coinciding with the announcement of the Federation movement’s new partnership with DHS, was dedicated mainly to the state of threats posed to American Jewish institutions. According to the Jewish Federations spokesman, it’s the first time DHS is partnering with a faith-based community to advance its “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign. “Homeland security begins with hometown security, and our nation’s faith-based organizations play a critical role in keeping our communities safe,” said ...

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KMOX) -- Police swarmed a home in Independence Missouri Sunday, their guns drawn ready for a big fight against a very large animal. However that animal, an alligator turned out to be a concrete lawn ornament. Homeowner Rick Sheridan told a Kansas City Fox television station he was working in his garage when he heard gunshots. He went around the back of his house to see three police officers shooting at the large reptile lying next to a pond. "The officer fired two rounds, and killed my concrete, ornamental alligator," Sheridan said. A conservation agent had advised police to kill the gator if they felt it posed a danger. After realizing the piece of yard art ...

Ind. court: No right to resist 'unlawful police entry'

The Indiana Supreme Court has ruled that people cannot keep police from entering their homes, even if the entry is "unlawful." In a 3-2 decision, the court held there are valid reasons for police officers to enter homes without a warrant and without knocking , including concerns for an officer's safety or that a suspect may escape or that evidence may be destroyed. "We believe. . .a right to resist an unlawful police entry into a home is against public policy and is incompatible with modern Fourth Amendment jurisprudence," wrote Justice Steven David. "We also find that allowing resistance unnecessarily escalates the level of violence and therefore the risk of ...

This machine can let police see all of your photos. Even that one. (Credit: Matt Hickey/Cellebrite) The Michigan State Police have started using handheld machines called "extraction devices" to download personal information from motorists they pull over, even if they're not suspected of any crime. Naturally, the ACLU has a problem with this. The devices, sold by a company called Cellebrite, can download text messages, photos, video, and even GPS data from most brands of cell phones. The handheld machines have various interfaces to work with different models and can even bypass security passwords and access some information. The problem as the ACLU sees it, is that ...

In response to the award, the victim's family lashed out against the Pleasantville Police Benevolent Association, saying it wasn't that much of a surprise. "I'm glad the world gets to see the arrogance we've been dealing with since Oct. 17, from the district attorney's office all the way to the Police Benevolent Association," said Danroy Henry's mother, Angella Henry, in a statement Tuesday. ...

The woman walked on the public sidewalk near the abortion business when an unidentified person threw the device -- akin to a "Molotov cocktail" -- in her direction. The woman did not see either the firebomb nor the assailant it exploded on the sidewalk behind her, making a loud popping noise like a big firecracker as it burst into flame. Fortunately, the woman was not hurt in the incident. After she regained her composure, the victim called Karen Trierweiler, coordinator of the 40 Days prayer vigils in ...

Is Dayton Police Officer Wolpert a corrupt Police Officer

Dayton Police Officer Wolpert testified in Dayton court that he pulled over a driver because he was a known person who drove without a license. The problem is that Officer Wolpert wrote a ticket saying the driver was pulled over for a turn signal violation. Wolpert is obviously lying. Does anyone else out there on the worldwide web know of any violatons that Wolpert has commited. If you know of any crimes that Wolpert has commited sign on and tell us about it. We want true stories and not made up stuff. I have also witnessed Officer Wolpert search a vehicle without a search warrant. That is why I think Wolpert is a corrupt police officer.
