Cannes Hears Call For ‘War Criminals’ Bush, Blair To Face Trial

CANNES, France — Director Ken Loach, in Cannes with his Iraq war film, called Thursday for the "war criminals" George W. Bush and Tony Blair to be tried for launching the invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein."We have to keep pursuing Blair, Bush and the others until we have them in the dock," he said as he arrived for a red carpet premiere of his film "Route Irish" which is in the running for the festival's Palme d'Or top prize."It's certainly true that the people who started the war, who are war criminals, have not been called to account," said Loach, whose new work probes the murky world of private security contractors in ...

Some years ago, I knew a Western woman...she was was not exactly a friend, more like an acquaintance, a friend of a good friend of mine. Anyways, this woman I will call her Marion, was newly wed and she and her husband were very much looking forward to having a baby. When Marion got pregnant, after careful planning, because Westerners love to plan everything right down to the last cent -- she had all the medical care she needed. Tests, ultrasounds and the rest....and during her 4th month of pregnancy she underwent the usual exam to determine that her baby was a healthy fetus.Marion was devastated when her doctor informed her that her baby had some genetic deformity and she had to undergo ...

IRAQ: Allawi Warns Of Sectarian War

BAGHDAD: Iyad Allawi, the former prime minister who scored a surprise win in the recent general election, has warned that Iraq risks descending into a new sectarian war. Mr Allawi said that since the bitterly contested election on March 7, in which his Iraqiya party list won 91 seats, political groups had abandoned efforts to build a united government and were regressing into sectarianism, encouraged by Iran. Mr Allawi, who led the country for nine turbulent months in 2004 as a US-appointed transitional prime minister, warned that unless the US and its allies safeguarded Iraq's nascent democracy, renewed conflict could spread around the region. ''This conflict will not remain ...

We Won in Iraq: At least 84 killed in attacks across Iraq

BAGHDAD – A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a textile factory Monday in a crowd that gathered after two car bombings at the same spot in the worst of a series of attacks that killed at least 84 people across Iraq, the deadliest day this year. The violence added to fears that political uncertainty could further destabilize the country. More than two months after the March 7 elections, there is still no new government in sight and the negotiations to form one could drag on for months more as U.S. troops prepare to withdraw. In the worst attack of the day, a suicide bomber with explosives strapped to his belt blew himself up among a crowd of people who were trying to help victims ...

Iraq Political Crisis Worsens as Court Bars Candidates
Post Date: 2010-04-26 12:55:05 by Brian S

BAGHDAD — A special electoral court in Iraq disqualified a winning candidate in last month’s election on charges he once was a member of Saddam Hussein’s Baath Party, two officials said Monday. The decision was the first concrete move to change the preliminary results of the vote that Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki’s coalition narrowly lost. The court’s ruling intensified a political crisis that remains far from resolved, raising tensions and even the specter of violence. The court’s decision, at a minimum, will delay the formation of a new government through the months when the Obama administration has pledged to withdraw its combat troops, leaving a ...

Bloodiest Day of 2010 as Bombings Rock Baghdad [Full Thread]

A massive coordinated attack involving bombings of several Shi’ite mosques and marketplaces in Shi’ite neighborhoods across Baghdad have left scores of people dead and several hundred wounded, and the nation wondering if they are just seeing the beginning of the rising violence. The attacks were the third major spate of bombings in Baghdad this month alone, but also stand as the deadliest yet of 2010. Year over year death tolls have been on the rise over the past several months, and are only getting worse since the disputed March 7 election. So far no one has claimed credit for the blasts but the government was quick to blame al-Qaeda, speculating that it was revenge for the ...

18 Veterans Commit Suicide Each Day
Post Date: 2010-04-23 10:19:25 by Fred Mertz

Troubling new data show there are an average of 950 suicide attempts each month by veterans who are receiving some type of treatment from the Veterans Affairs Department. Seven percent of the attempts are successful, and 11 percent of those who don't succeed on the first attempt try again within nine months. The numbers, which come at a time when VA is strengthening its suicide prevention programs, show about 18 veteran suicides a day, about five by veterans who are receiving VA care. Access to care appears to be a key factor, officials said, noting that once a veteran is inside the VA care program, screening programs are in place to identify those with problems, and special efforts ...

The most telling aspect of this story isn’t just that we now know our own Army leaked the video or that many others like it exist, it is the lengths we go to using “surrogates” to spin away murder. The Iraq War: Still A Massive Mistake
Post Date: 2010-04-07 00:02:32 by Brian S

There’s a growing narrative that Iraq’s solidifying democracy makes the seven years of US war and occupation a worthy enterprise. Some observers have even spun Iraq’s March 7 elections as proof that democracy promotion via military occupation can succeed. Don’t believe the hype. The Iraq war remains a mistake of mammoth proportions. And Iraq’s election represents a pyrrhic victory, as the economic, political, and moral costs of the occupation far outweigh any benefits. First are the sacrifices in terms of blood and treasure. The broad consensus is that the war has cost the US economy well over $700 billion – with the meter still running. The Iraq war has also ...

MOSUL, Iraq — The family of a Reuters photographer killed in an American military airstrike watched the video of it late Monday and burst into tears as they saw what appeared to be the crews of two American Apache attack helicopters kill their son and 11 other people, gloating at what the crewmen seemed to think was a successful strike on insurgents. “At last the truth has been revealed, and I’m satisfied God revealed the truth,” said Noor Eldeen, the father of the photographer, Namir Noor-Eldeen, who was 22 when he was killed in July 2007. “If such an incident took place in America, even if an animal were killed like this, what would they do?” Other family ...

World Health Organisation To Probe Rise In Iraq's Deformed Babies

The World Health Organisation has pledged to carry out an independent study into the rise in birth deformities in the Iraqi city of Fallujah. Sky News first exposed the problem almost two years ago when we reported on babies like Fatima Ahmed, who was born with two heads. In May 2008, her mother Shukriya pleaded for help to understand what went so wrong with her child. Since then the rate of birth deformities has increased, with doctors and undertakers telling us they see several cases of abnormalities every day. Over the months Sky News has revealed a catalogue of case studies including children born with missing limbs, abnormal abdomens and all sorts of congenital disorders. ...

Pop quiz—What does more to galvanize radical anti-American sentiment in the Muslim world: (a) Israeli settlements on the West Bank; or (b) a Lady Gaga music video? If your answer is (b) it means you probably have a grasp of the historical roots of modern jihadism. If, however, you answered (a), then congratulations: You are perfectly in synch with the new Beltway conventional wisdom, now jointly defined by Pat Buchanan and his strange bedfellows within the Obama administration. What is that wisdom? In a March 26 column in Human Events, Mr. Buchanan put the case with his usual subtlety: "Each new report of settlement expansion," he wrote, "each new seizure of ...

Iraqi Children's Growth Stunted By War, Says Study
Post Date: 2010-03-29 19:00:59 by Brian S

Iraqi children born in the most violent areas are shorter than those born in other parts of the country, UK researchers have found. The team looked at data from Iraq's central statistics office and said under-fives from these areas were on average 0.8cm (0.3in) shorter. Low height can be linked to poor diet and sanitation. The University of London work is being presented at the Royal Economic Society annual conference. The author says the study shows the conflict damaged children's health. The study analysed the height of children during the the first three years of the war and found that "stunting" was a serious problem among those born in provinces in the south and ...

Sorry, Rove, Bush Did Lie About Iraq

With the publication of Karl Rove's memoir, the American public can expect a reprise of the argument that it was unfair for anyone to accuse President Bush of lying about Iraq. George W. Bush’s political adviser Karl Rove claims “one of the biggest mistakes” of that presidency was not aggressively challenging critics who charged that Bush “lied” to the American people about the reasons for the Iraq War, an accusation that Rove insists was false and unfair. In his forthcoming book, Courage and Consequence, Rove calls the “lie” charge “a poison-tipped dagger aimed at the heart of the Bush presidency” and blames himself for “a weak ...

Now, he's being rebuked as a fabricator by one of his close former colleagues in the Bush White House.Former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan on Tuesday sharply rebuked Rove for absolving himself of personal complicity in the Valerie Plame scandal, alleging that the top Bush strategist privately confessed his role in the leak and apologized for it three times."I think what you're seeing is that Karl is continuing to live in his own world here," McClellan said in an appearance on MSNBC's Countdown With Keith Olbermann ...

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama called Iraq's election an "important milestone" on Sunday despite deadly violence, praising Iraqi security forces and repeating his end-2011 goal for removing all U.S. troops from the country. Scores of mortar rounds, rockets and roadside bombs exploded near polling stations across Iraq, killing 38 people, in an apparent effort to scare voters participating in the election for Iraq's second full-term parliament since the 2003 U.S. invasion. Obama praised millions of Iraqis for turning out to vote despite the attacks. "As expected, there were some incidents of violence as al Qaeda in Iraq and other extremists tried to disrupt ...

Rove Admits To Error On Iraq As Bush Strategist

(03-02) 15:50 PST NEW YORK, (AP) -- Political strategist Karl Rove says President George W. Bush made the right decision to launch the Iraq war in 2003, but the former White House adviser admits the failure to find weapons of mass destruction badly damaged the administration's credibility. In his new memoir, "Courage and Consequence," Rove blames himself for not pushing back against claims that Bush had taken the country to war under false pretenses, calling it one of the worst mistakes he made during the Bush presidency. Rove says Bush did not knowingly mislead the American public about the existence of such weapons. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the book in ...

Read it and Weep: Military Suicides Are Causing Civilian Casualties, Too

WASHINGTON - Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Wimmer charmed potential Army recruits with a movie star's smile, but somehow it never quite reached his eyes, even when he was cradling his newborn twin daughters. Whenever he closed his eyes, he dreamed of his own dead body swinging from a rope, his feet dangling just above a chair. When those nightmares eventually blurred, the Persian Gulf veteran and former Army recruiter began trying to recreate their grisly images. He tried to kill himself with pills in the woods, and a razor blade in a hotel room, and every suicide attempt drew his wife, Jennifer, and their four daughters deeper into his dark world. Jennifer learned that his fourth suicide ...

How Powerful is George W Bush?

I listen to progressive talk radio while driving, instead of texting. I was stunned to hear George Bush (W) getting blamed for the recent Toyota crisis. The reasoning was that W orchestrated massive corporate deregulation during his presidency. This is only one example of the incredible reach of this seemingly simple man. Hardly a speech goes by that Obama does not mention what he “inherited” from W. After Obama’s first stimulus package he said the plan would keep unemployment from going above 8%. Now that it’s way over that mark, we are told that W’s impact was more powerful than anyone could imagine. W is the devil in the details of the global economic crisis. ...

Chirac: Bush Half-Cracked When He Started His Iraq War

Incredibly, President George W. Bush told French President Jacques Chirac in early 2003 that Iraq must be invaded to thwart Gog and Magog, the Bible’s satanic agents of the Apocalypse. Honest. This isn’t a joke. The president of the United States, in a top-secret phone call to a major European ally, asked for French troops to join American soldiers in attacking Iraq as a mission from God. Now out of office, Chirac recounts that the American leader appealed to their “common faith” (Christianity) and told him: “Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East…. The biblical prophecies are being fulfilled…. This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use ...

CIA Man Retracts Claim on Waterboarding

Well, it's official now: John Kiriakou, the former CIA operative who affirmed claims that waterboarding quickly unloosed the tongues of hard-core terrorists, says he didn't know what he was talking about. Kiriakou, a 15-year veteran of the agency's intelligence analysis and operations directorates, electrified the hand-wringing national debate over torture in December 2007 when he told ABC's Brian Ross and Richard Esposito in a much ballyhooed, exclusive interview that senior al Qaeda commando Abu Zubaydah cracked after only one application of the face cloth and water. "From that day on, he answered every question," Kiriakou said. "The threat information he ...

U.S. Wrestling With Olive Branch for Taliban

WASHINGTON — As the Obama administration pours 30,000 additional troops into Afghanistan, it has begun grappling with the next great dilemma of this long war: whether to reconcile with the men who sheltered Osama bin Laden and who still have close ties to Al Qaeda. The Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, has said he wants to reach out to the leaders of the Taliban, and administration officials acknowledge privately that they are considering the idea. But they warn that the plan is rife with political risk at home and could jeopardize a widely backed effort to lure lower-ranking, more amenable Taliban fighters back into Afghan society. The debate, still in its early stages, could shape ...

Sen. Suicide Prevention Continues To Elude Army Leaders

While the Army has devoted unprecedented resources and attention to the increasing suicide rate of soldiers, service leaders still don't have a good handle on how to prevent troops from taking their own lives. "It's deeply disconcerting," said Col. Elspeth Ritchie, a psychiatrist and the Army's director of behavioral health. "We've been working on this for a long time, yet still we had eight active-duty suicides in the first eight days of this year." Ritchie made the remarks Monday during a conference on suicide prevention in Washington held jointly by the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments. Army suicide rates have risen annually for the past ...
