Churches splitting over homosexuality and related issues In the past 15 years, at least four big US churches have split after long and intense debates over homosexuality and the role of LGBTQ members. Religious historians say we haven't seen so many church schisms since 19th- century debates over slavery, when denominations split into Northern and Southern branches. And the current breaks over homosexuality could be just the early tremors of an earthquake that will scatter the country's entire Christian landscape, some scholars argue. "The mainline Protestants are like the shock troops," said James Hudnut-Beumler, a professor of religious history at Vanderbilt ...

More churches are breaking in two over LGBTQ issues In recent decades four of the seven traditional mainline Protestant denominations have split up over homosexuality or related issues, such as the interpretation of Scripture and frustrations over rehashing the same debate for decades. They read like an alphabet soup of American religion: The American Baptist Churches USA, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Presbyterian Church USA.

The Methodist Church will probably split in two over homosexuality, and that's bad for all of us The Methodist Church added "united" to its name after merging with another denomination in 1968. But for much of the past 52 years, unity has proved elusive. That's been especially true at meetings of the church's top legislative body, the General Conference, where factions have fought for decades about sexuality and Scripture. After the church strengthened its bans on partnered LGBTQ clergy and same-sex marriage last year, many Methodists argued that a split was likely inevitable. "The situation here has become so toxic that the church was basically ...

Evangelical leaders urge Trump to release migrant detainees at risk from coronavirus Nine leaders of evangelical Christian organizations called on the Trump administration to release migrants from detentions facilities “who do not pose a threat to public safety” amid the coronavirus pandemic. In a Monday letter to acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, leaders who are part of the Evangelical Immigration Table called for immigration officials to partner with religious groups and community organizations to find released detainees “safe accommodations in which to ‘shelter in place’ for as long as such practices are advised.” Evangelical Immigration ...

10 People Who Give Christianity a Bad Name

10 People Who Give Christianity a Bad Name Christianity has been around for two thousand years and, for the most part, it has preached a good message by which to live. But unfortunately, as with all organized bodies, many people claiming to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ have shown themselves to behave quite opposite to the message it espouses. This list looks at 10 of the worst. 10 - Sun Myung Moon Moon Senate CrownedmessiahHe is the founder of the Unification Church, which has become worldwide since its origin in 1954. Moon was born in 1920, and has set himself up at the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. A lot of people go around saying, “I’m Jesus,” but they are ...

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation of the association's history, activities, objectives and their relevance in the present century. The Closed Mind (faggot propaganda posted by Gatlin)

The Closed Mind Why does it close, and how does it open? Each of us knows at least one person whom we would say has a closed mind. Bias, bigotry, misogyny, xenophobia, and homophobia are all examples of closed- mindedness. When one’s mind is made up, there is no changing it. But there are other forms of closed-mindedness—for example, religious fundamentalism (regardless of the particular religion) is also a form of closed-mindedness. Fundamentally, what closed-mindedness does is shut out the possibility of original thinking. The closed-minded person is not allowed to question her own beliefs. Such questioning allows a person to center on her own authentic self and to come to ...

The Credibility Crisis of Today’s Pastors

The Credibility Crisis of Today’s Pastors The good news: Most people don’t dislike pastors. The bad news: They just don’t really care about pastors either. In Barna’s The State of Pastors report, produced in partnership with Pepperdine University, the reception of pastors was generally lukewarm. One-quarter of all U.S. adults (24%) holds a very positive opinion of pastors in general. Meanwhile, roughly the same proportion reports a negative opinion (28% “somewhat” + “very” negative). Similarly, one-quarter of the population has little regard for the pastoral influence in their city or neighborhood (23% “not very” + “not at all” ...

The rightwing Christian preachers in deep denial over Covid-19's danger The rightwing Christian preachers in deep denial over Covid-19's danger A number of American religious leaders have endangered their flock by holding services – and by claiming the virus can be defeated by faith in God Last Sunday in Tampa, Florida, the Pentecostal pastor and conspiracy theorist Rodney Howard-Browne conducted two services for full houses at his River church. The closely packed audience spent hours together taking in hymns and Howard- Browne’s extended sermon, even as the state implemented quarantine for New Yorkers, and projections estimated that Florida’s coronavirus death ...

Louisiana pastor urges people to donate stimulus checks to church A Louisiana pastor who caught heat for ignoring social-distancing guidelines by holding in-person church services is now urging people to donate their coronavirus stimulus checks to evangelists. The Rev. Tony Spell is imploring followers to join a new online challenge he dubbed the #PastorSpellStimulusChallenge because churches have been starved of “offerings” amid the pandemic, he said in a video posted to YouTube on Wednesday. “Donate it to evangelists, North American evangelists who haven’t had an offering in a month; missionaries, who haven’t had an offering in a month; music ministers, who ...

1 What does it mean to have a 'misguided faith'?

What does it mean to have a 'misguided faith'? Hebrews 11 has always been considered the "faith" chapter. In Hebrews 11:1 we learn that "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." But that is not how the world defines faith. We hear all sorts of ways the word "faith" is bandied around. Many will say that they have faith that the bridge they cross each day won't fall or that a sinkhole won't open to swallow their house. Even to have what some call "blind" faith which in my opinion is an oxymoron. My dictionary gives this meaning to "blind faith": belief without true understanding, ...
