Spammer Slammer Targets Politics
Post Date: 2006-12-14 11:16:04 by A K A Stone

The brains behind a doomed antispam service are turning their technology into an online swarming tool for activists, hoping to subject politicians and government agencies to the kind of mass pressure Blue Frog once inflicted on spammers. With its Blue Frog software, Israel-based Blue Security made it easy for spam victims to automatically send opt-out requests to advertised websites, either in e-mail or through online order forms on the sites being promoted. In practice, that meant that some sites were deluged with thousands of such messages simultaneously, prompting critics to charge that the service was little more than a vigilante denial-of-service tool. Controversial or not, the ...

Windows Vista will have a major impact on the personal computing experience of millions of users worldwide during the coming years, but that doesn't mean Microsoft's latest operating system is a killer product, nor something you necessarily need or want. Wired News recently obtained a copy of the final RTM, or Release to Manufacturing, build of Windows Vista Ultimate from Microsoft. This edition of the operating system is the most powerful and advanced of the four editions Microsoft will make widely available Jan. 30, 2007. Other editions of Windows Vista are made for home users (Windows Vista Home Basic, $200, $100 upgrade), users who want a better entertainment experience ...

The holiday season is in full swing, and more and more people are using the web as a giant shopping mall. Thankfully, the proliferation of Web 2.0 technologies is giving birth to a new breed of shopping site that can help navigate this crowded marketplace. Sites like Offertrax, StyleFeeder and Mpire don't sell anything at all. Rather, they improve purchasing intelligence by keeping an eye out for bargains and sending electronic alerts when it's time to swoop in for the kill. Instead of wasting time browsing the virtual aisles at dozens of sites, just tell Offertrax what you're shopping for. The site aggregates price-change notifications and special offers from various online ...

The file sharing company Azureus on Monday launched a new distribution platform for downloading high-quality video, which the company hopes will become the next YouTube -- but for high definition, DVD-quality video on the internet. Available at Zudeo, users can upload, download and comment on videos in a manner similar to other video sharing sites like YouTube, Metacafe and Revver. But instead of the low-resolution video offered by competing services, the Azureus system promises internet video at better than DVD quality, thanks to BitTorrent's ability to distribute huge video files speedily. "Try watching a YouTube video in full-screen mode," says Azureus CEO Gilles ...

Editor's note: Ex-hacker Kevin Mitnick came by his security expertise the hard way. In the 1990s, his electronic penetration of some of the biggest companies in the world made him a notorious tech boogieman, and ultimately landed him five years in prison. Now free and clear, Mitnick has reinvented himself as a computer security consultant and writer. He travels the world teaching organizations how to secure their information in a world of corporate spies and younger versions of himself. He took a break from his jet-setting to share some practical security tips. A Tale of Two Web Browsers

In the last two years, the web has gone through a truly vibrant period of innovation. We've seen advancements in file sharing, social networks and rich media presentation, as well as the proliferation of Ajax and full-fledged applications that run within the browser. Within the last week, two new browsers have been released -- both of which hope to be your first choice for bringing all of that new web content to your desktop. Firefox 2, the latest version of Mozilla's open-source browser, was released Tuesday -- less than two years since version 1 and about 11 months behind version 1.5. Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7, the first browser from the Redmond giant since IE6 arrived in October ...

The official release date for Firefox v2.0 is scheduled for tomorrow, but the browser is already available on the Open Source Lab download server. Based on the User Agent details given by the browser, the official v2.0 release uses the same engine as the v2.0 RC3 (Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0). It is possible, although unlikely, that the installation packages could be updated before the official release. No change log has been provided for the v2.0 yet. It is possible that no changes at all have been made since RC3. In any case you can download the now released final version of Firefox v2.0 from http://Filepedia.com. Firefox 2.0 is available at: ...

Recording engineer develops everlasting glass CD

A Japanese recording engineer has developed the world's first glass CD guaranteed not to warp, distort and of a beautiful design, according to its maker. Music critics who have tried out the CD said that it's outstanding and virtually like listening to a live performance. But high quality music to last forever comes at a price -- 98,700 yen apiece to be exact -- as glass CDs have to be made by hand. "I wanted to make a CD that could be passed on to grandchildren," the glass CD's inventor, Suenori Fukui, said. Fukui, 60, noticed that glass was a great receptor of sound and decided to try and create a CD from the material. He spent a decade developing the glass CD together with ...

Creative ditches Zen FM recording

Creative is reported to have succumbed to recording industry pressure by releasing a Firmware update for a couple of its players which disables the FM recording feature. The firmware modification affects the company's Zen MicroPhoto and Zen Vision:M players. In the release notes, Creative gives no reasoning for the changes, simply noting, "this firmware removes your player's FM recording feature." In the past, the music industry has argued that recording audio from the radio harms music sales. More recently, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) dealt a lawsuit to XM Satellite Radio, alleging XM was guilty of "massive wholesale infringement" which was ...

The most popular antivirus applications on the market are rendered useless by around 80 percent of new malware, according to AusCERT. At a security breakfast hosted by e-mail security firm Messagelabs in Sydney on Wednesday, the general manager of the Australian Computer Emergency Response Team (AusCERT), Graham Ingram, told the audience that popular desktop antivirus applications "don't work". "At the point we see it as a CERT, which is very early on -- the most popular brands of antivirus on the market … have an 80 percent miss rate. That is not a detection rate that is a miss rate. "So if you are running these pieces of software, eight out of 10 pieces of ...

Yahoo harnesses users’ collective knowledge

Yahoo Search logoYahoo will on Wednesday set out plans to harness the collective knowledge and interests of its 400m regular users to develop the next generation of search technology and narrow the gap with internet juggernaut Google. The vision, to be outlined at the company’s analyst day in San Francisco, comes as Google’s growing lead in search and its steady encroachment in e-commerce and other forms of internet activity have touched off a scramble among rivals. Terry Semel, Yahoo’s chairman, revealed last week that the company had discussed merging at least part of its search business with Microsoft, though those talks were abandoned. But in an effort to leap ahead ...

Starforce enforces DRM by instant reboot (without warning)

Despite all the problems DRM has been causing lately, it seems like companies involved in copy protection just keep trying to create more dangerous copy protections. Originally, they were more of a nuisance causing compatibility issues, installing wanted software, etc. Next came Sony Rootkits which used cloaking to hide its DRM processes and files, but with the side affect of being able to cloak spyware & viruses, thus causing a serious security risk. More recently, the Settec Alpha-DVD protection has been reported to cause DVD writers to malfunction. Now, Futuremark has uncovered a very dangerous anti-piracy system Starforce is now using. This copy protection system installs a driver ...

VEIL technology and it's role in US analog hole legislation

heystoopid used our news submit to tell us about one persons investigation attempt of technology named in an upcoming US legislation concerning the analog hole. The Sensenbrenner - Conyers analog hole bill to be specific. This bill would require almost all analog video devices to implement two DRM schemes called Copy Generation Management System Analogue or CGMS-A and Video Encoded Invisible Light or VEIL. CGMS-A is a copy protection mechanism that around here we might more easily recognize as the Broadcast Flag and we have been reading about it for some time already. However, VEIL technology is relatively new and maybe you have not heard of it yet. Admittedly, this is an interesting ...
