Mathematicians Discovered Something Mind-Blowing About the Number 15
Post Date: 2023-05-07 02:02:37 by Charles_Byrd

15: That’s the answer to an incredibly complicated math problem recently solved by a two-person team at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Usually, big, complicated math problems that are hard to solve have big, complicated answers that are almost equally hard for the layperson to understand. But not this one. This one is just … 15. The question, originally posed in 2008, went as such: If you had an infinite grid of squares—like a sheet of graph paper that went on for eternity—and you wanted to fill it with numbers that had to be more- than- that-number squares apart, what is the minimum number of different numbers you would need? This is called the “packing ...

Shares of Tokyo-based ispace tumbled after the private company said its Hakuto-R Mission lander probably crashed while on approach to land on the lunar surface. Recall, we provided a live stream of the lunar landing on Tuesday afternoon. About 25 minutes into the planned landing, there was a communications mishap. Click for Full Text!

Exposing the Climate Racket: The Latest IPCC Report
Post Date: 2023-04-23 01:59:51 by Charles_Byrd

The entire world appears enthralled with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and its periodic edicts. The pretension is that this is a “scientific” organization employing scientific methodology to forecast risks of global warming. It isn’t. Reviewing the latest IPCC Report, one is struck by how far-ranging this global Panel now ventures—into “social sciences,” economics, politics, and (of course) social justice. Notable is the wide range of supposed disciplines brought to bear on the single issue of greenhouse gasses, while other contributing causes of environmental harm—especially chemical pollution—are comprehensively sidestepped. ...

Climate science makes a bad religion

What does it take to avert the end of the world? For most of human history this has been a question for religion. And the answer has usually been that human beings must repent of their sins. They must surrender some comfort and luxury to appease angry gods. In primitive times worshipers might sacrifice a bull – or even a human being. Click for Full Text!

A Convenient LIE

Climatology is complicated, and I do not claim to be an expert in this topic. It is generally accepted that CO2 levels are, in part, driving global warming. While I would agree that this is the case, my intuition tells me that the effect of CO2 levels in the range at which they exist in our atmosphere presently has very little to do with climate. I cannot discount a possible contributing effect of CO2, but I believe that the current perception that rising carbon dioxide levels are the central factor that is driving the destruction of our biosphere is unfounded and illogical. In a Brooklyn lab stuffed with 3D printers and a makeshift pickleball court, employees at a brain interface startup called Synchron are working on technology designed to transform daily life for people with paralysis. The Synchron Switch is implanted through the blood vessels to allow people with no or very limited physical mobility to operate technology such as cursors and smart home devices using their mind. So far, the nascent technology has been used on three patients in the U.S. and four in Australia. Click for Full Text!

Bizarre New Study Floats the Idea of Using Lunar Dust to Mitigate Global Warming
Post Date: 2023-02-13 16:49:11 by Charles_Byrd

Claiming that “climate change is an existential threat,” a study released on February 8 by researchers from the University of Utah is suggesting that lunar dust could be used to filter sunlight in order to cool down the Earth. Climate hysterics believe that mankind’s emissions of carbon dioxide and other trace atmospheric gases is leading to out-of-control warming, which they believe will cause the planet to be essentially uninhabitable in coming decades. The researchers don’t claim that their new technique of blocking sunlight alone can ease the threat of global warming, but insist that it must be used in conjunction with the elimination of fossil-fuel emissions as a ...

An uncrewed Russian supply ship docked at the International Space Station has leaked coolant, the Russian space corporation and NASA reported Saturday, saying the incident doesn’t pose any danger to the station’s crew. Roscosmos said the hatch between the station and the Progress MS-21 had been locked so the incident didn’t affect the orbiting outpost. Click for Full Text!

US Airlines Urge FAA to Extend 5G Deadline

A group representing major U.S. airlines "strongly urged" the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to extend a proposed deadline to June 2024 to retrofit airplane altimeters to ensure they are not susceptible to 5G wireless interference. Airlines for America (A4A), which represents American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and others also asked the FAA to revise a proposed 5G safety directive "to reflect technical realities and the continued safe operation of many aircraft." The group warned a "material number of aircraft" in U.S. fleets will not be modified by July and without changes it could "severely limit operations" and lead to flight ...

I’ve been silent for a few days, because the latest volume of the journal I edit is about to go to press, and this means I must spend hours imposing consistency and accuracy upon unbelievably tedious minutiae in footnotes that nobody will ever read or care about. There are assistants who should in theory do this work for me, but I have learned that their involvement is to be minimised, as they’re just as likely to introduce more problems as they are to solve them, and even when they don’t mess up, they never return pristine edited files. Instead, after weeks, they proudly forward heavily annotated PDFs, which I must then painstakingly correct regardless. In short, academic ...

Report Claiming the Last Eight Years Were the “Hottest on Record” Causing Hysteria in Media

A new report compiled by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) is leading to the use of fainting couches all over the media. The report claims that 2022 was the fifth-hottest year on record and that the eight warmest years on record have occurred since 2014. According to the report, 2016 remains the hottest year ever recorded. Or, as The New York Times breathlessly reported: “The world remained firmly in warming’s grip last year, with extreme summer temperatures in Europe, China and elsewhere contributing to 2022 being the fifth-hottest year on record, European climate researchers said this week.” Click for Full Text!

Riddle solved: Why was Roman concrete so durable?
Post Date: 2023-01-08 23:53:16 by Charles_Byrd

The ancient Romans were masters of engineering, constructing vast networks of roads, aqueducts, ports, and massive buildings, whose remains have survived for two millennia. Many of these structures were built with concrete: Rome’s famed Pantheon, which has the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome and was dedicated in A.D. 128, is still intact, and some ancient Roman aqueducts still deliver water to Rome today. Meanwhile, many modern concrete structures have crumbled after a few decades. Researchers have spent decades trying to figure out the secret of this ultradurable ancient construction material, particularly in structures that endured especially harsh conditions, such ...

Hayek on the Difference between Science and Scientism

It is a common practice among scientists who win the Nobel prize for some intellectual achievement to deliver their Nobel Prize lectures on another intellectual achievement that is in more need of attention. Such was the case with Albert Einstein, who won the Nobel prize in physics in 1921 “for his services to Theoretical Physics and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect,” which celebrated his achievements in statistical and quantum mechanics, but who delivered a speech on the special theory of relativity, a controversial idea to many scientists at the time. Likewise, Friedrich August von Hayek has won the prize “for [his] pioneering work in the ...

Where Does ChatGPT Fall on the Political Compass?

OpenAI recently released ChatGPT, one of the most impressive conversational artificial intelligence systems ever created. In the first five days after its debut on November 30, over 1 million people had already interacted with the system. Since ChatGPT provides responses to almost any query provided to it, I decided to use several political orientation tests to determine whether its answers display a skew toward any particular political ideology. There’s No Natural ‘Carrying Capacity’ for the Human Population: An Essay Inspired by the Happy News that the Human Population Has Reached Eight Billion
Post Date: 2022-12-06 20:51:50 by Charles_Byrd

The late, great Julian Simon spent decades battling intellectually against biologists and zoologists who were convinced that human population growth, if governments did not hold it in check with draconian measures, would spell doom for multitudes of humans. (I might as well have used the present tense above, because many of the scientists with whom Simon did battle, including the most prominent, Paul Ehrlich, are still alive.) These students of animal development and behavior insist that every species inhabits an environment with a natural “carrying capacity.” If the population of a species grows in number beyond the limits of its environment’s carrying capacity, the death ...
