What Did Lincoln Really Think of Jefferson?
Post Date: 2015-07-05 19:39:29 by A K A Stone

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — “Lincoln hated Thomas Jefferson.” That is not exactly what we expect to hear about the president who spoke of “malice toward none,” referring to the president who wrote that “all men are created equal.” Presidents have never been immune from criticism by other presidents. But Jefferson and Lincoln? These two stare down at us from Mount Rushmore as heroic, stainless and serene, and any suggestion of disharmony seems somehow a criticism of America itself. Still, Lincoln seems not to have gotten that message. “Mr. Lincoln hated Thomas Jefferson as a man,” wrote William Henry Herndon, Lincoln’s law partner of 14 years — ...

Sorry, Donald Trump Has A Point

You are hardly a name-brand company if you haven’t dumped Donald Trump over the past seven days. NBC, Univision and Macy’s have all thrown The Donald under the bus, in the heaviest blow to schlock culture in this country since the cancellation of “Jersey Shore.” The carnage ranges widely across media, encompassing reality TV (“Celebrity Apprentice”), entertainment properties (the Miss USA Pageant), fashion (the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection) and even fragrance (Success by Trump). Yes, the 2016 Republican field is so wide and diverse it includes perhaps the nation’s first presidential candidate with his own fragrance, and, it must be noted, not just ...

Cold War Veteran

Anybody else ever heard of such a critter? There is a old guy I see at the local Hardees fairly often that started showing up wearing one of those blue ball caps you see that are sold that have stuff like "VN Vet","Korean War vet",USN Vet",etc, etc, etc. The difference is his says "Cold War Veteran" on it,and he has a bunch of badges and other crap pinned on it. I asked him about it the first time I saw it,and he says he wears it because he was a veteran of the Cold War. Come to find out he was in the Coast Guard Reserve so he could avoid the draft and get a government job. I don't really know if I should laugh or be mad. IMHO,pretty much everyone ...

End Domestic Partner Benefits

My company, like many others, offers the same benefits to same sex domestic partners as it does to opposite sex spouses. With the recent supreme court ruling on same sex marriage, we should all call on all of these companies to end domestic partner benefits or offer the same to hetero couples as well. If pushed, think most companies would offer benefits only to married couples of the same or opposite sex. If they want the benefits, make them get married. In a lot of cases, I think we'll find out that they aren't such a dedicated couple as just freeloading off the system. Poster Comment:It is discrimination to offer these benefits to some stupid queer and not people who aren't ...

Letter to the Editor

I saw a copy of an email this morning on FB allegedly sent to Obama. By researching, I found the actual letter as it was published in a “letter to the editor” on August 29, 2009, in a Jackson, MS newspaper. The person circulating the new email on FB simply changed the “Dear Sirs” to “Dear Mr. President.” Because the message is still so poignant even today, I have decided to republish it here. Dear Sirs: During my last night's shift in the ER, I had the pleasure of evaluating a patient with a shiny new gold tooth, multiple elaborate tattoos, a very expensive brand of tennis shoes and a new cellular telephone equipped with her favorite R&B tune for a ...

The King v. Burwell Aftermath
Post Date: 2015-06-26 09:03:32 by cranky

One of the core problems with a decision like the Supreme Court’s King v. Burwell ruling is that it does the opposite of what a Supreme Court presided over by justices-for-life is supposed to do. As Chief Justice Roberts makes abundantly clear in his ruling, he looked at politics, not the law, concluding that upholding the clear text of the Affordable Care Act would have killed it, and inflicted chaos on a health insurance system already driven mad by ObamaCare. He made a political judgment – with copious pressure from President Obama and his followers, and the weight of his own previous decision to put politics above the law to preserve the individual mandate – that the ...

“I will never be able to hold her again, but I forgive you.” So said Nadine Collier, who lost her mother in the massacre at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, offering forgiveness to Dylann Roof, who confessed to the atrocity that took the lives of nine churchgoers at that Wednesday night prayer service and Bible study. If there is a better recent example of what it means to be a Christian, I am unaware of it. Collier and the families of those slain showed a faithfulness to Christ’s gospel of love and forgiveness that many are taught but few are strong enough to follow, especially at times like this. Their Christian witness testifies to a forgotten ...

The massacre of black churchgoers in Charleston by an evil psycho is a hideous thing. The case is especially sickening because the victims were chosen specifically because of their race. Thank God it's extremely rare for whites to target black people for attack. And yet the public is being told by The New York Times, The Washington Post, MSNBC and Salon that the Charleston massacre is proof that we live in a country packed with marauding racist murderers. It's like saying we have an epidemic of men flying gyrocopters onto Capitol Hill. Yes, there's that one time, but I notice you keep citing the same case. In The Washington Post, for example, columnist Lonnae O'Neal ...

Reading Tea Leaves on the 2015 Supreme Court Term

Reading Tea Leaves on the 2015 Supreme Court Term For What It Is Worth By: Dan McLaughlin (Diary) | June 21st, 2015 at 03:44 PM | 10 The political world will increasingly be watching the Supreme Court over the next two weeks, as the eleven cases left on the Court’s docket for its 2014 Term include a number of blockbusters. The Court, in the words of Justice Jackson, is not final because it is infallible; it is infallible because it is final. Nothing can stop the Court from doing whatever it wants. That said, it does operate under some self-imposed institutional constraints, and one of those is that it tries to follow its own traditions in – among other things – how and ...

At the declaration by Donald Trump that he is a candidate for the presidential nomination of the Republican Party, media elites of left and right reacted with amusement, anger and disgust. Though he has been a hugely successful builder-businessman, far more successful than, say, Carly Fiorina, who has been received respectfully, our resident elites resolutely refuse to take Trump seriously. They should. Not because he will be nominated, but because the Trump constituency will represent a vote of no confidence in the Beltway ruling class of politicians and press. Votes for Trump will be votes to repudiate that class, whole and entire, and dump it onto the ash heap of ...

Over on the porch.  Well worth the read. I haven’t liked that organization for quite some time, mostly because of the way they portray wounded Veterans as being objects of pity.  Salamander puts it better than I have been able to. an organization that uses the same visuals, tone and background music for those who fight our wars, that are are also used for starving African children … and at the same time squash local organizations using a huge legal budget. Touché. Here is some perspective, without minimizing the sacrifice.  The total US combat wounded in 13 years in Iraq and Afghanistan numbers around 52,000, with the vast majority being minor wounds ...

Black Dads Doing Best of All

One of the most persistent statistical bludgeons of people who want to blame black people for any injustice or inequity they encounter is this: According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013 in nearly 72 percent of births to non-Hispanic black women, the mothers were unmarried. It has always seemed to me that embedded in the “If only black men would marry the women they have babies with . . .” rhetoric was a more insidious suggestion: that there is something fundamental, and intrinsic about black men that is flawed, that black fathers are pathologically prone to desertion of their offspring and therefore largely responsible for black community ...

The Two Boots of Authoritarianism By Gary Lloyd "When the government’s boot is on your throat, whether it is a left boot or a right boot is of no consequence."I Mainstream political pundits waste endless amounts of time and effort condemning, criticizing, and categorizing one political movement or another as right-wing or left-wing. The merits (or otherwise) of one "wing" over another are a point of never-ending obsession with reporters, academics, and similar self-proclaimed experts. Supposedly, right-wingers are "for" the elitists and trend toward fascism: top- down control over an oppressed and helpless common people who are prevented from ...

In George Orwell’s masterpiece, “Nineteen Eighty-Four,” he writes: In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If ...

Just watched Bernie Sanders on Meet the Press this morning, and if anything Bubbette! is going to have to "run right" to compete with him. In FACT,most of what he said was to the right of the majority of the alleged Republican candidates. He was all about bringing jobs and manufacturing back to the US,shutting down trade deals with China, ending 3rd world immigration, etc, etc, etc. Based entirely on what he said on teebee this morning,*I* am more likely to vote for him than any of the alleged Republican front runners. I would say "I would damn sure vote for him before I would vote for JEB",but the truth is I would vote for Satan before I will ever again vote for anyone ...

Obama Shocked By Disastrous Economic News…Blames Man Made Global Cooling

The White House is in a state of shock today after receiving word that the US is halfway to a new recession. They were so dazed, they actually blamed Man Made Global Cooling. The GDP for the first quarter was originally announced as a gain of .2%. Today that number was revised to a drop of .7%. The definition of a recession is when the GDP comes in at a negative number for two quarters in a row. That means we are officially halfway to a new recession. The delicious irony is that after Obama decided to honor our troops by having his picture taken eating ice cream and declaring that global warming is a bigger danger to the US than ISIS, he blamed the bad numbers on extremely cold and snowy ...

The New Yorker cover has attracted a lot of comment. It shows Hillary Rodham Clinton outside the locker room trying to get in. But the locker room is full of white Republican males - Walker, Paul, Bush, Cruz, Rubio... Okay, the last couple are Hispanic, but let's not get hung up on details. And Bush identifies as Hispanic on voter registration forms, but let's not get hung up on the paperwork... But, in fact, the GOP has already let a female into the locker room - Carly Fiorina - plus a black guy - Ben Carson - and an Indian - Bobby Jindal. So nothing celebrates diversity like the locker room for the Republican primary debate: whites, blacks, browns, Hispanics, men, women, old, ...

Prohibition II - a.k.a. "The War on Drugs"

Prohibition, The War on Drugs -- Call it whatever you like. Both terms may be used interchangeably. Yet for some reason, most Americans fail to see the correlation. To most, the term prohibition refers only to the prohibition of alcohol back in the 1920s. Many see prohibition as a noble, yet failed experiment. Yet, these same people see the War on Drugs as something completely different. It isn't prohibition at all. "Of course drugs are illegal ... They have always been illegal, haven't they? ... Wasn't it one of the Ten Commandments?.. Thou shall not lie, steal, kill, or worship at the golden bong." Somehow, the idea that drugs have always been illegal has ...

Amazing, really.Police throughout the nation say they fear a growing anti-cop sentiment driven by a handful of racially-charged incidents is making their jobs more dangerous on the streets, where the number of officers killed in the line of duty is rising sharply.High-profile cases involving police and black suspects from Missouri to Baltimore have prompted intense criticism of law enforcement, from not only activists but the media and even the White House, leaving law enforcement officers alienated and angry, say cop advocates. And the protests, rioting and federal investigations come even as the job of keeping Americans safe has become more dangerous. So let me see if I get this ...

‘I knew they were here,’ West Texas sheriff says of ISIS

Midland sheriff doesn’t think U.S. is serious about securing border Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter became somewhat of a sensation last year after appearing on national television outlets such as Fox News and CNN warning of an ISIS presence in Texas. It would be naïve to assume that they are not here, Painter told a CNN news anchor in an interview. He used the cable news soapbox to send a firm message to the terrorist group, saying, "If they rear their ugly head, we'll send them to hell." The "ugly head" has reared, according to CNN reports. Days after two gunmen were shot by law enforcement outside an anti-Islam Prophet Mohammed cartoon contest in ...
