Gun Sales Dip in January as Trump Takes Office
Post Date: 2017-02-06 00:46:05 by Tooconservative

The number of gun-related background checks performed by the FBI in January were down significantly from the record number from last January. The FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, processed 2,043,184 gun-related checks through January 2017, records released on Friday show. That's more than 500,000 fewer checks than the record set the year before. It comes on the heels of a streak that saw 18-straight months of new monthly records, and two new yearly records as well. January's total still saw the third most checks for any January going back to 1998 despite its drop off from record-setting pace. NICS checks are widely considered the most accurate ...

Judge Neil Gorsuch: Some Cause for Concern (Stop & Frisk, Disarm) [Full Thread]

In recent days, news outlets have been reporting that 10th Circuit judge Neil Gorsuch has now risen to the top of President Trump's list of potential Supreme Court nominees.  He apparently replaces Judge William Pryor, who was widely reported as previously leading the pack of potential nominees.  Judge Pryor faced significant backlash from many on the right, including Evangelical Christians, criticizing Pryor's apparent support of the radical homosexual and transgender agenda. The danger in being the front runner for a spot on the High Court is that you receive intense scrutiny, and, as with most candidates, Judge Gorsuch is difficult to evaluate fully.  Having spent ...

Obama's final shot: Ban on 'traditional (lead) ammo'

In its final attack on gun owners, the Obama administration moved to ban traditional lead ammo on federal grounds and waterways on its last full day in office. The ban, which includes cheap bullets and common fishing tackle, can be repealed by the Trump administration and was immediately condemned as an attack on outdoors people and rural life. "This directive is irresponsible and driven not out of sound science but unchecked politics," said Lawrence Keane, senior vice president and general counsel of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. "The timing alone is suspect. This directive was published without dialogue with industry, sportsmen and conservationists. The next ...

This is the city’s first homicide of 2017. The police report identified Underiner as 20 years old and a current OSU student. OSU’s directory lists Underiner as a marketing and Spanish double major; in a previous Lantern article he identified himself as a third-year in marketing and the treasurer for Buckeyes for Concealed Carry. Columbus police officers were called to the scene on a report of a shooting inside the residence at 12:30 a.m. Underiner was found unresponsive and pronounced dead on the scene at 12:41 a.m. ...

Is Donald Trump Going to Take Away Your Gun?

Pro-gun Trump vs. anti-gun Trump After all, this is the man who argued all through the 2016 campaignthat he is "a 2nd amendment person," that he is "against gun control," and who even advocated "making all concealed-carry permits valid in every state." Is this really the kind of guy who might take away your gun? Well, it's essential to recognize that Donald Trump has flip-floppedon gun control before -- and could do so again. For example, in his 2000 book The America We Deserve, Trump declared unabashedly: " I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun." Trump recanted his position on ...

A Public Service By Dr. Thomas Sowell December 20, 2016 5 Min Read A- A+ Sometimes someone inadvertently performs a public service by bringing an unbelievably stupid and dangerous idea to the surface, where it can be exposed for what it is. The New York Times can be credited — if that is the word — with performing this public service in a recent editorial against proposals to allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed guns. They refer to what they call the National Rifle Association's "fantasy that citizens can stand up to gunmen by shooting it out." Nobody has suggested any such thing. Data collected over many years — but almost never seeing the ...

Ron Paul: War on ‘Fake News’ Part of a War on Free Speech

A major threat to liberty is the assault on the right to discuss political issues, seek out alternative information sources, and promote dissenting ideas and causes such as non-interventionism in foreign and domestic affairs. If this ongoing assault on free speech succeeds, then all of our liberties are endangered. One of the most common assaults on the First Amendment is the attempt to force public policy organizations to disclose their donors. Regardless of the intent of these laws, the effect is to subject supporters of controversial causes to harassment, or worse. This harassment makes other potential donors afraid to support organizations opposing a popular war or defending the rights ...

After Donald Trump's win, Yolanda Scott is upgrading the crowbar she keeps in her purse to a small-caliber pistol. Scott, an African-American, is one of many minorities who have been flocking to gun stores to protect themselves, afraid Trump's victory will incite more hate crimes. "You feel that racists now feel like they can attack us just because the president is doing it," one gun shop owner told NBC News. Gun store owners told NBC News that since November 8 they're seeing up to four times as many black and minority customers — and black gun groups are reporting double the normal number of attendees at their meetings since the election. Alito: SCOTUS conservatives have lots of opportunities once we get Scalia’s replacement NOVEMBER 19, 2016 BY ED MORRISSEY Now that the election has settled the question of who will appoint the next Supreme Court justice, we have spent a considerable amount of time analyzing who might get Donald Trump’s appointment. Perhaps a better way to look at that question will be to recall the context in which it gets made. Earlier this week, Justice Samuel Alito laid out the potential agenda for a court in which an originalist replaces the late Antonin Scalia — and reminded the Federalist Society of the bullet conservatives dodged in the election: Justice Samuel Alito on Thursday ...

Northern Wisconsin is gun culture country. When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's, everybody had a gun or three in every house. It wasn't always so. The Depression was a hard time for a lot of people. My father managed to snag the Springfield model 84-C during the 1930's. He paid $5 for the rifle and $2.50 for the scope. The rifle will feed Shorts, Longs, and .22 Long Rifle interchangeably through the detachable 5 shot magazine. The scope was an old straight tube 3/4 inch 2 3/4 power. It was state of the art in the 30's. It was a Weaver. As I recall, it was a model 329. Those sold in 1934 for $4.75, with a choice of mounts. The rifle was advertised for $9.70 in ...

The Coming National Gun Ban – and How the States Can Resist

The law of averages predicts that at some time in the future, perhaps as soon as 2017, the Democratic Party will once again control the White House and majorities in both houses of Congress. When that happens, the next Democratic president -- be it Hillary Clinton or someone else -- will sign into law a sweeping, foreign-style gun ban. The legislation has already been written. H.R. 4269 would enact a national, permanent ban on the manufacture and sale of so-called “assault weapons” and all firearm magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. The bill, introduced last December, already has149 Democratic co-sponsors (218 are needed to pass the House). H.R. 4269 would ban all ...

Neither Major Candidate Will Defend Your Gun Rights

At the presidential debate, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton made all kinds of attacks on each other. But on one notable issue, they were in complete agreement: they both think people on the federal government’s “no fly list” should be categorically denied their right to buy guns under the Second Amendment. Both candidates have repeatedly said so for months. Trump’s stance on this issue should be deeply troubling to those who care about gun rights – and also to people concerned about constitutional rights generally, even if they don’t care much about this one. As both the ACLU and conservative commentators point out, the no fly list is notoriously inaccurate. ...

Celebrating the racial diversity of the Charlotte protesters last week, William Barber II, chairman of the North Carolina NAACP proudly proclaimed, “This is what democracy looks like.” Well, if Barber is right, so, too, was John Adams, who warned us that “democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” Consider what the protesters, who, exults Barber, “show us a way forward to peace and justice,” accomplished. In the first two nights of rioting, the mob injured a dozen cops, beat white people, smashed and looted stores, blocked traffic, shut down interstate highways, got ...

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday reiterated his call for expanded use of the controversial stop-and-frisk practice from law enforcement, adding that police should also take people’s guns away in the process. “Basically, they will, if they see — you know, they are proactive and if they see a person possibly with a gun or they think may have a gun, they will see the person, and they will look, and they will take the gun away,” Trump said in an interview with "Fox and Friends."“They will stop, they will frisk, and they will take the gun away, and they don’t have anything to shoot with.” Donald Trump literally wants to take ...

The new gun-control policy is called “stop and frisk.” Donald Trump’s professed love of guns is almost as abiding as his love of walls and portraits of himself. He has claimed that no one loves the Second Amendment more, and that he could shoot someone in the street “and I wouldn’t lose any voters.” He wants to federalize concealed-carry laws, and once suggested that the Pulse nightclub shooting would have gone differently had the patrons carried weapons, a statement that even the N.R.A. said “defies common sense.” He has called himself a “big Second Amendment guy” and even proposed that if gun control-loving Hillary Clinton became ...

A divided federal appeals court ruled that a decades-old federal law indefinitely banning people committed to mental health treatment from owning a gun could violate the Second Amendment. The Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday revived a lawsuit filed by a Michigan man who failed a background check while attempting to buy a gun in 2011. Clifford C. Tyler had been committed to a mental institution 25 years earlier but since has received a clean bill of health. Judge Julia Smith Gibbons, writing for the Sixth Circuit majority, said government lawyers offered compelling evidence for prohibiting people currently or recently suffering from mental illness from possessing a gun.
