The number of gun-related background checks performed by the FBI in January were down significantly from the record number from last January. The FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, processed 2,043,184 gun-related checks through January 2017, records released on Friday show. That's more than 500,000 fewer checks than the record set the year before. It comes on the heels of a streak that saw 18-straight months of new monthly records, and two new yearly records as well. He apparently replaces Judge William Pryor, who was widely reported as previously leading the pack of potential nominees. Ohio State student and concealed-carry advocate Tarak Andrew Underiner was found dead from gunshot wounds at a residence on Northwood Ave. early Thursday morning. This is the city’s first homicide of 2017. The police report identified Underiner as 20 years old and a current OSU student. MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Tuesday night, December 27th. The deceased has been identified as 17-year-old Deonte Thomas. It happened in the area near 63rd and Euclid around 10:30 p.m. Police say their preliminary investigation reveals Thomas was attempting to commit a robbery at the time of the shooting and was shot by the 36-year-old Milwaukee man who was being robbed -- who was out walking his dog on Tuesday night. Northern Wisconsin is gun culture country. When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's, everybody had a gun or three in every house. It wasn't always so. The Depression was a hard time for a lot of people. My father managed to snag the Springfield model 84-C during the 1930's. He paid $5 for the rifle and $2.50 for the scope. The rifle will feed Shorts, Longs, and .22 Long Rifle interchangeably through the detachable 5 shot magazine. The scope was an old straight tube 3/4 inch 2 3/4 power.
