By Susan Thompson on May 25, 2010, 7:08 pm Arizona legislators have been begging the Federal government for any type of assistance they can get to help quell the upsurge of violence that seems to be a part of daily life in the counties that lie on the border of U.S. and Mexico. Now the Federal government has seen their way to assist with the introduction of 1200 troops and $500 million. One such attack has left a rancher dead back in March.
The Issue–The Violence Is Increasing
In response to the announcement Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) said that the president is “doing the right thing,” and beginning to recognize the border security problems. Presently the border isn’t considered very secure due to the major increase in violence from the local drug lords and cartels. The immigration law just enacted that allows an officer to ascertain the legal status of a suspect and has served to fuel the fires. The President called the law “misguided,” but promised more aid to secure the borders. Although Sen. McCain asked for 3,000 troops, Obama would only commit to the 1,200.
Other Aggravating Factors Could Be
After sending 17,000 troops to the Gulf Of Mexico to help with what could be the biggest Natural Disaster in modern history, the President will not only be hard pressed to find the troops to free up, but must also eventually find the funding to support said movement. It seems that this administration must always be faced with the biggest, baddest, ugliest, etc…and so on. In this case he urged other lawmakers to side with him and demand accountability for those who hire illegals, and the illegals themselves. When he spoke before the GOP Senators caucus he noted that “Many in the conference have supported efforts before to fix a broken system and impose accountability at our borders.” Maybe this will help finally fix the broken borders.
