Update: Footage published on Al-Masdar News moments ago appears to show white phosphorus or cluster bombs falling over Raqqa, which are both banned internationally if used on residential areas.

(MPN) — In what some speculate may be the beginning of the end for Daesh (ISIS), the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) entered Raqqa – Daesh’s Syrian stronghold – for the first time on Tuesday. SDF commander Rojda Felat told the AFP news agency that the group is “fighting street battles inside Raqqa now, and we have experience in urban warfare.” The advance came after heavy airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition, which killed more than 20 civilians trying to flee the offensive by boat.

We're revolutionizing the news industry, but we need your help! Click here to get started.

The push for the U.S.-backed SDF to claim Raqqa from Daesh has been in the works for over seven months, having only been made possible by U.S.-led coalition air support, thousands of military advisers and deliveries of heavy weapons. While the U.S.-led coalition, particularly the U.S. itself, claims that this support is all for the common cause of eradicating Daesh, their plans for Raqqa following a Daesh defeat could make the future goal of a united Syria all but impossible to achieve.

In April, the SDF announced that they would give control of post-Daesh Raqqa to a “civilian council” instead of the Syrian government. This council would be supported by more than 3,000 U.S. ground troops. General Joseph Votel – the head of U.S. Central Command – stated that these ground troops would stay in Raqqa long after a Daesh defeat in order to help “America’s allies” stabilize the region and aid them in establishing “Syrian-led peacekeeping efforts.” In other words, U.S. ground forces will support U.S.-backed opposition forces in establishing what would essentially be an independent state within Syria.

There is little chance that the Syrian government, led by President Bashar al-Assad, and its allies will allow this to happen, suggesting that the possibility of the Syrian conflict spilling beyond the country’s borders will come after Daesh’s defeat in Raqqa. However, recent events suggest that this may happen even sooner.

(deployads = window.deployads || []).push({});

Pro-government forces are also actively fighting Daesh within the Raqqa province and the U.S. already bombed other pro-government forces directly when they entered a deconfliction zone around a facility where U.S. military advisers are training SDF troops in al Tanf. According to a statement from U.S. Central Command, “the Coalition destroyed additional pro-Syrian regime forces that advanced inside the well-established deconfliction zone in southern Syria.”

However, the Syrian and Russian governments do not recognize those deconfliction zones established without Syrian government approval, especially those unilaterally set up within Syria by the U.S. Essentially, the U.S. is now setting up deconfliction zones in order to criminalize the presence of Syrian forces in order to protect the independent state it seeks create. Now, a military alliance fighting in support of Assad said it may target U.S. positions in Syria, warning that its “self-restraint” regarding U.S. airstrikes on government forces will end if Washington crosses “red lines.”

A divided Syria – separated by sectarianism

The endgame here is clearly the eventual division of Syria. The U.S. plan to partition Syria is nothing new and was touted numerous times by former Secretary of State John Kerry, along with journalists and prominent U.S. academics, as the “necessary” solution to the Syrian conflict. According to this plan, Syria would be divided along sectarian lines, with autonomous regions created for Alawites, the Druze/Christians, Kurds and Sunni Muslims.

The plan, which was not drafted by the Syrians, would allow the U.S. to draw dividing lines across the entire nation and redistribute key oil and gas resources within Syria to the sectarian group of its choosing. In addition, the plan would give the majority of Syrian territory to Sunni Muslims, a region that would likely be governed by a “council” comprising U.S.-backed Sunni militant groups, nearly all of which have the stated intention of creating a radical Wahhabi theocracy that would likely end up waging new conflicts with the other autonomous regions.

Partition-style “nation-building” is not a new tactic, having previously been used by Western imperial powers in Africa to weaken the continent through the use of internal conflict caused by manufactured sectarianism and subsequently making Africa’s rich resources more exploitable. Syria is no exception, as the conflict itself, far from being a “revolution,” has been about weakening Syria and dividing it along sectarian lines to make its own oil and gas reserves – as well as its strategic position – more exploitable.

The same occurred in Iraq and Libya, where sectarianism was manufactured after U.S.-led invasions. Plans for their partitioning have also been proposed. Indeed, Syria is symptomatic of the Western and Zionist neo-colonial plan to restructure the entire Middle East, with nations that have long championed secularism bound to suffer as a result.

To accomplish this plan, the U.S. must first weaken Assad. The situation in Raqqa may provide the justification by allowing the U.S. government to argue that U.S. troops in the area are in danger, regardless of the fact that their presence there is technically illegal. This reasoning has been used by the U.S. before to justify unilateral invasions or coups in other nations. Perhaps the removal of Daesh from Raqqa will trigger the “final phase” of the Syrian conflict, as has been suggested – and it could easily prove to be the most dangerous phase yet.

Poster Comment:

Near as I can figure, the Empire installs the crazy Wahhabis for the same reason it installs dictators, they control domestic dissent and keep their people poor and dumb, while taking graft to do what they're told and deliver the economic goods. The Saudis appear to fit that description, whereas more liberal regimes like Assad's, Saddam's, Qaddafi's, etc. were loyal to their people instead of the Empire so they must be demonised and deposed or destroyed.

It sounds like we're Leading From Behind again.

U.S.-led? How, exactly?

I think they're still after building natural gas pipelines to Europe from Qatar through Turkey. Qatar has vast supplies.

Military radio or direct contact.

I do not think they, in our times, do it through snail mail or pigeons.

Why do you ask?

US Marines arrive in Syria to retake Raqqa from ISIS

BEIRUT – The United Nation's children agency warned Friday that the fight for the Islamic State group's stronghold of Raqqa in northern Syria is threatening the lives of more than 40,000 children, as overnight airstrikes on the city claimed the lives of more than a dozen people.

UNICEF said in a statement that the violence has resulted in massive displacement in and around the city, with some 80,000 children now internally displaced and living in temporary shelters and camps.

The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces launched their attack on Raqqa earlier this week and U.S.-led coalition airstrikes have intensified since then.

"An estimated 40,000 children remain trapped in extremely dangerous conditions in Raqqa. Many are caught in the crossfire," said UNICEF regional director Geert Cappelaere. He called on all parties to provide safe passage to those wishing to leave the city.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported more than 25 airstrikes overnight on Raqqa saying they killed 17 people, including 12 who were killed at an Internet cafe. It said one of those killed was an activist with the group.

The activist collective Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently said that in addition to the airstrikes the city was subjected to artillery and missile attacks. The group said the U.S.-led coalition used white phosphorous in the night attacks on Raqqa.

IS also alleged that the U.S.-led coalition used white phosphorous munitions over Raqqa on Thursday at dusk, when Muslims would breaking their fasts during the holy month of Ramadan. White phosphorous is a form of incendiary munition that burns at extremely high temperatures and can be used to illuminate conflict zones or obscure them with smoke.

International law prohibits the use of white phosphorous in civilian zones because of its indiscriminate effects — from starting fires to causing excruciating burns for bystanders over a large area — according to Human Rights Watch, which said it was investigating the allegations.

The U.S. CENTCOM military command refused to comment on specific allegations but said it uses white phosphorous rounds "in accordance with the law of armed conflict... in a way that fully considers the possible incidental effects on civilians and civilian structures."

The violence in Raqqa comes amid tensions in southeastern Syria where Syrian troops and their allies have been clashing with U.S.-backed rebels near the border with Iraq. The Observatory said rebels launched an attack on government forces near the area where the Syrian, Jordanian and Iraqi borders meet.

On Thursday, a drone that U.S. officials say was likely connected to Iranian- supported Hezbollah forces fired on U.S.-backed troops and was shot down by an American fighter jet in southern Syria near a base where the U.S.-led coalition is training Syrian rebels fighting the Islamic State group.

U.S. defense officials said the weapon fired by the drone did not detonate and no one was hurt.

Earlier this week the U.S. bombed similar forces inside the protected zone, after they came under attack by another unaffiliated group of Syrian rebels. The pro- government forces brought in additional equipment and called in airstrikes to repel the assault, and the U.S. was informed of those developments through the "deconfliction" phone line it has set up with Russian military officials.

BEIRUT U.S.-backed Syrian forces have advanced into opposite sides of Islamic State's so-called Syrian capital of Raqqa, the forces and a war monitor said on Saturday.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a group of Kurdish and Arab militias supported by a U.S.-led coalition, began to attack Raqqa on Tuesday after a months-long campaign to cut it off.

The U.S.-led coalition estimates that Raqqa, which Islamic State seized from Syrian rebels in 2014 during their lightning advance in Syria and Iraq, is defended by 3,000-4,000 jihadists.

It has been a hub both for Islamic State's military leaders and its bureaucrats, and has been used to plot attacks in countries around the world.

The SDF said it had seized al-Mishlab district in the far east of Raqqa on Friday and al-Sabahia district in the west. The war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the SDF had taken Mishlab and more than half of Sabahia.

The forces are now advancing into al-Romania district in northwest Raqqa, the SDF and the Observatory said. Islamic State had turned back an earlier SDF assault on a military base on the north side, the Observatory said.

Islamic State still has a long sweep of territory along Syria's Euphrates valley and wide stretches of desert, despite recent losses to the SDF, the Syrian army and rebel groups.

To the west of Raqqa, the Syrian army and its allies have advanced into Islamic State territory and on Friday reached SDF lines near the town of Tabqa, 40km (25 miles) from the city.

The Syrian government has described the SDF's war against Islamic State as "legitimate" and said its military priorities are further east, suggesting it does not plan to confront the group now.

VOA

BEIRUT — A U.S.-backed alliance broke into the western part of the Islamic State group's stronghold Raqqa on Saturday, the force and a monitor said, opening up a second front inside the Syrian city.

Backed by U.S.-led coalition air strikes, the Syrian Democratic Forces have spent months tightening the noose on IS-held Raqqa and entered the city for the first time earlier this week from the east.

On Saturday, they pierced into Raqqa from the west, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group.

"The SDF captured the western half of the al-Sabahiya neighborhood and are reinforcing their positions there," Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

"They then advanced north to the adjacent district of al-Romaniya and are fighting IS there," he told AFP.

A statement from the SDF's Operation Wrath of the Euphrates said its fighters stormed al-Romaniya on Saturday and were locked "in fierce fighting inside the district".

Held by IS since 2014, Raqqa emerged as a key hub for the jihadists' operations in Syria, neighboring Iraq, and beyond.

The SDF — an Arab-Kurdish alliance formed in 2015 — launched its campaign to capture Raqa in November and chipped away at IS territory around the city's north, west, and east.

In addition to holding part of al-Sabahiya in Raqqa's west, the alliance also controls the eastern neighbourhood of Al-Meshleb.

But the force has struggled to advance from the city's north, where IS holds a military complex known as Division 17.

"IS has reinforced the northern approach to Raqa much more, thinking that's how the SDF would try to advance on the city," Abdel Rahman said.

"The western and eastern entrances to the city were much less fortified," he said.

The offensive has been backed by the US-led coalition with air strikes, special forces advisers, weapons, and equipment.

FNA

TEHRAN (FNA)- The US-led coalition confirmed the use of internationally-banned white phosphorus munitions in Syria, media sources reported.

Russia's RIA Novosti reported that the coalition claimed to use the white phosphorus for acts of camouflage, screening, obscuring and marking in an attempt to deny its crimes.

In its statement, the coalition referred to “cautious and rational measures taken to reduce the dangerous effects of white phosphorus on civilians and infrastructures.”

The US-led coalition warplanes have carried out 25 airstrikes on residential buildings in Raqqa city during the past 24 hours, using internationally prohibited white phosphorus bombs.
