The Justice Department on Wednesday appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to oversee a federal investigation into potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election.

The appointment came amid a growing Democratic outcry for someone outside the Justice Department to handle the politically charged investigation.

It followed the revelation Tuesday that fired FBI Director James Comey had written in a memo that Trump, in a February meeting in the Oval Office, had asked him to end an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. The White House has denied that account.

Mueller was appointed FBI director in 2001 and led the FBI through the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. He retired in 2013.

The Justice Department said Mueller has resigned from his job at a private law firm to take the job of special counsel.

The Justice Department declined to explain the decision-making involved in the appointment. (1 image)

Republicans are spineless cowards.

No matter the outcry, the Democrats under Obama stood tough: no special prosecutor for anything.

But the Republicans, facing pressure from a minority party, go ahead and do it.

This is because the Republican Party - the crony capitalists - hate Trump and hate the populism that put him there.

This investigation needs to be undertaken, it needs to find no crimes to indict, and it needs to be closed.

I can't disagree with any of that except to say the democrats and the msm will never let it go.

You're right - they won't let it go. But they only have the power that the Republicans give them.

The Democrats control nothing, and can force nothing. If they are getting their way, it is the Republicans who are doing it, because the Republicans control the entire government.

This is the crony capitalist Republicans trying to take out Trump, with Democrats braying more loudly and screaming for his head. The Democrats are not the movers here - they are the cheering squad.

Think you nailed this one.

Was going to ask you for your legal opinion on the comments Trump made escorted in the Comey memo.

Did I miss it elsewhere?

The comments Trump made escorted in the Comey memo?

Did you mean "as recorded"?

There is nothing wrong with asking that an investigation be closed. If Trump leveled threats at Comey, that might have been a problem, but he didn't. So, there is no legal issue.

Of course, that assumes that our legal system is actually clear, and actually just. In truth, all of the language of our legal system is written very loosely, so that just about anybody can always be prosecuted by the authorities if the authorities want to make a prosecution.

We see the police doing this sort of thing on their own every day, shooting people for "resisting arrest" even when they wee not perceptibly resisting, because the officer "felt threatened". Then they are acquitted, by the justice system, even if they have murdered a man in cold blood.

It is not at all surprising to me that there is an effort to politically prosecute Trump. We saw that continuously against Obama, and against the Clintons. We also saw it against Reagan and the Bushes. The political opposition in America always seeks to criminalize their opponents. Our system comes out of England, where the PURPOSE of the legal system was to give the King and the Lords the ability to reach down and kill anybody who got out of line with their wishes, on loose and vague notions of "treason".

We have been seeing this effort by the political opposition since Nixon. But it never goes anywhere except against conservative Republicans. There is an obvious reason for this. Our government is divided, power is chopped up. You cannot advance an effort against a President without bipartisaa support. Nixon was taken out because the Republicans turned on him and lent their voices to his destruction.

Reagan was not taken out because the Republicans refused to cooperate with the Democrats on that.

Clinton was not taken down because the Democrats refused to cooperate with the Republicans.

Right now the Republicans enjjoy a greater partisan majority in American government at all levels than any party ever has, except for the period right at the end of the Civil War, when the Republicans also had plenary power.

It is impossible for the Democrats to advance their drive against Trump unless the Republicans collude with them. How can some acting official in the Justice Department be pressured by the Democrats to do anything>. He can't be. Republicans had to authorize that. We can see several Republicans who did: John McCain, Lindsey Graham, the Bush Establishment. The Republican Party is the Crony Capitalist party. With Trump's rise, they lost control of their party to populists. The same was true in the day of Nixon and Reagan. But Reagan threw them all sorts of sops - he gave them their tax cuts, he gave them their Cold War. He gave them their free trade. Nixon ended Vietnam. And Trump is a nationalist protectionist.

The Republicans took down Nixon, and they are aiming to take down Trump. Republicans are, and have always been, shitstains. But they have also always been very effective at diverting peoples' eyes away from what they are doing. The party that gave us Roe v. Wade and defended and extended it, pretends it is pro-life. The Republicans could shut down this whole Russia nonsense anytime they wanted to. They don't because they don't want to. Trump's populism threatens their power. They are determined to take him out. And if Trump does not use his full powers to turn the tables on them and take their leaders out instead, they will succeed.

Signs are that Trump is in way over his head, and that his form of dealmaking consists of bluff and bluster, but that if his bluff is called, he caves. Trump's Saratoga - the battle he had to win - was over the budget. He had to be willing to veto and shut the government down - and LEAVE it shut down for four years, if necessary to either force compromise or smash everything to pieces. The Democrats were clearly ready to smash the country to pieces rather than compromise on anything. So they won on everything.

In any case, things do not look good. The Crony Capitalist Party has decided to take down Trump, and Trump for his part is not nearly a vicious a street fighter as he pretended to be.

I feel sorry for Trump, but not THAT sorry. He has the power to smash his enemies with law enforcement and intelligence. He won't fight. He's afraid to. They're not. So it looks as though they will win.

And that means that the Democrats are going to sweep the mid-term elections.

The Crony Capitalists' refusal to allow the nationalists to rule, and Trump's refusal to use the full measure of his power - example: to defy District Court judges of the 9th Circuit - means that Trump will lose the battle to the Crony Capitalists.

It also means that the Trump coalition will never come together again, and we will have Democrat rule for the rest of our lives, starting with the 2018 mid-term elections.

The Crony Capitalists cannot ultimately win, because they are too small in number, and their economics are self-interested and bad for most people. That means that the Left will return to power, and this time - the Republican Party being broken and the nationalists and pro-lifers utterly defeated and exhausted by the Crony Capitalists - the socialists will win and will rule America for 100 years.

This is the fault of the Republican Party, of Paul Ryan and John McCain, of Mitch McConnell and the Bush family, for having an agenda that is good for billionaires and bad for America. And it's the fault of Donald Trump, for not being courageous enough to actually fight - using arrests and intelligence and armed officers of the law, and defiance of judges when needed (like Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln). Trump has succeeded in business by bluff. In real power, he is afraid to use the gun, and he's afraid to outright defy the courts. So he will be taken out ANYWAY, and is losing without a fight. Trump is all hat and no cattle. And the Republicans are evil, as ever.

This time, though, to get rid of Trump the Republicans are breaking their own party. The Democrats will return to power with a vengeance, and THEY are not afraid to use it. Once the Republicans lose this time, it's over. The people who voted for Trump will never come out for Republicans again.

So the Crony Capitalists will have, in the end, slit their own throats.

Trump needs to fight - the indictments need to be pouring out of the Trump Justice Department against his enemies. But they're not, and they're not going to. Trump brought a megaphone to a gunfight.

"If Trump leveled threats at Comey, that might have been a problem, but he didn't."

The following needs to be repeated over and over. Comey testified -- under oath-- in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on FBI oversight on May 3, 2017, months after the meeting with Trump:

COMEY: Not in my experience. Because it would be a big deal to tell the FBI to stop doing something that -- without an appropriate purpose. I mean where oftentimes they (DOJ) give us opinions that we don't see a case there and so you ought to stop investing resources in it."

"But I'm talking about a situation where we were told to stop something for a political reason, that would be a very big deal. It's not happened in my experience."

Yes, it does. Comey said under oath that he was never pressured. So, he did not take Trump's comment to him to be pressure. He took it, correctly, to be a request, which is what it was.

"He took it, correctly, to be a request, which is what it was."

Or Trump was simply stating his opinion or his thoughts on the matter that concerned his friend.

Where's the MSM barking and howling for the details on the private Clinton meeting with Loretta Lynch on the tarmac?

Exactly. Why hasn't Trump ordered an investigation of Loretta Lynch?
