United States News Title: Loudoun Co. middle school teacher arrested for DUI and alcohol possession at school LOUDOUN CO., Va. (ABC7) The fiancé of a middle school teacher accused of walking into class drunk, claims his betrothed had been under an immense amount of stress, but is not notorious for drinking in excess. On Friday around 8:40 a.m., staff at Sterling Middle School noticed sixth-grade English teacher, Megan Debo, was acting strangely. The school contacted a Loudoun County school resource officer who arrested the 29-year-old on charges of DUI and having an open container of alcohol within the main academic building. Sterling Middle School teacher accused of driving to class drunk + bringing alcohol in building. Cops arrested Megan Debo around 9am Friday. Everything seemed fine to me," Debo's fiancé told ABC7 at the couple's Sterling home Friday evening. "She made me breakfast and made me lunch, so yeah, everything seemed ordinary this morning. According to her fiancé, Debo was raised in Sterling and even attended Sterling Middle School as a teenager. She went to college out of state, but returned to Northern Virginia with the hope of one day becoming a public school teacher. She loves teaching; this is what she always wanted to do. I have never seen this kind of behavior in the past. I mean it caught me by surprise," Debo's fiancé added. Life, however, has a funny way of tossing curveballs. In Debo's case, unexpected school curriculum changes and the recent death of her grandfather applied a firm and uncomfortable level of day-to-day pressure, her fiancé asserted. To my knowledge, they brought in a new superintendent recently. There are just a lot of changes and theyve basically volunteered her for a lot of things. Thats been really stressing her out. A lot of college courses that they expect from her. It's putting too much on her plate," Debo's fiancé stated. When asked if Debo had previously struggled with alcohol, her fiancé confessed that his soon-to-be wife enjoys visiting wineries from time-to-time, but is by no means known for overindulging. Within hours of Debo's arrest, Loudoun County Public Schools alerted its school community about the eyebrow raising allegations. Parents, dropping off their children at a faculty versus student basketball game Friday evening expressed a variety of opinions. "For somebody to be drinking at eight o'clock in the morning, it's rather shocking," said Tracy Rivas who has a child at Sterling Middle School. "We're trying very to make kids, especially middle school ages, learn how to respect the adults, and that just doesn't help our case," said Melinda Ali, also a parent of a Sterling Middle School student. A spokesperson for Loudoun County Public Schools would not say what type of behavior Debo displayed to raise suspicion about her reported level of intoxication. School officials also wouldn't confirm whether students were in her classroom at the time. Loudoun County Public Schools says Debo has been with the school system full time for two years, teaching at Sterling Middle School for the entire time. Following Friday's arrest, Debo was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of her criminal case. Debo, like all LCPS employees, are required to submit and pass background checks with the FBI and Child Protective Services before being hired. The 29-year-old is being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on a $2,000 bond. Her fiancé remained hopeful of bringing her back home by Friday night. Shes been wanting to be a teacher forever. Of course shes going through hard times, but she loves seeing her kids every day. I'm just wishing for the best here," Debo's fiancé concluded. Loudoun Co. School has a history of incidents with drunk teachers in recent years, dating back to June and November 2011. Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread |
