FBI Director James Comey wrote in a letter today that the agency has discovered new emails that may be relevant to its investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. In an unexpected development, The New York Times has since reported that the emails were found on devices belonging to Clinton aide Huma Abedin and her scandal-plagued husband Anthony Weiner. The letter, which was distributed to members of Congress, has little information, but Comey writes that the agency discovered the emails in the course of another investigation. Those emails, Comey writes, "appear to be pertinent" to the Clinton probe. The agency is now "taking appropriate investigative steps" to see if the emails contain classified information, or are otherwise significant. The Associated Press reports the emails did not, however, come directly from Clinton's server. Following a string of sexting scandals that derailed his political career, Weiner is being investigated for allegedly sending explicit text messages to a 15-year-old girl. In a statement, campaign chair John Podesta called for Comey to "immediately provide the American public more information." "It is extraordinary we would see something like this just 11 days out from a presidential election," he said. In July, Comey chastised Clinton for her misuse of a private server, but the director also recommended against an indictment, in a decision which the Justice Department accepted.Comey offered no timetable on when more information may be available, but just two weeks before Election Day, the news is certain to provide more fuel for a problem that has followed Clinton throughout the campaign.
