Today's Brutal DDoS Attack Is the Beginning of a Bleak Future

William Turton
Gizmodo
Today 1:50pm

This morning a ton of websites and services, including Spotify and Twitter, were unreachable because of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on Dyn, a major DNS provider. Details of how the attack happened remain vague, but one thing seems certain. Our internet is frightfully fragile in the face of increasingly sophisticated hacks.

Some think the attack was a political conspiracy, like an attempt to take down the internet so that people wouldn’t be able to read the leaked Clinton emails on Wikileaks. Others think it’s the usual Russian assault. No matter who did it, we should expect incidents like this to get worse in the future. While DDoS attacks used to be a pretty weak threat, we’re entering a new era.

DDoS attacks, at the most basic level, work like this. An attacker sends a flurry of packets, essentially just garbage data, to an intended recipient. In this case, the recipient was Dyn’s DNS servers. The server is overwhelmed with the garbage packets, and can’t handle the incoming connections, eventually slowing down significantly or totally shutting down. In the case of Dyn, it was probably a little more complex than this. Dyn almost certainly has advanced systems for DDoS mitigation, and the people who attacked Dyn (whoever they are) were probably using something more advanced than a PC in their mom’s basement.

Recently, we’ve entered into a new DDoS paradigm. As security blogger Brian Krebs notes, the newfound ability to highjack insecure internet of things devices and turn them into a massive DDoS army has contributed to an uptick in the size and scale of recent DDoS attacks. (We’re not sure if an IoT botnet was what took down Dyn this morning, but it would be a pretty good guess.)

In 2011, hacker collective Anonymous rose to fame with DDoS attacks that pale in comparison to today’s attack on Dyn. Instead of taking out an individual website for short periods of time, hackers were able to take down a major piece of the internet backbone for an entire morning—not once but twice. That’s huge.

Update 4:22 PM EST: Looks like this is probably going to get even worse before it gets any better. Dyn says they are being hit with a third wave of attacks. Dyn told CNBC the attack is “well planned and executed, coming from tens of millions IP addresses at same time.”

Department of Homeland Security launches urgent investigation as massive ongoing series of cyber attacks take down thousands of sites including Amazon, Spotify, Reddit and Twitter

  • Github, SoundCloud and PayPal also reported to be down
  • Some of Amazon's cloud services also believed to have been hit
  • Outage appeared to be primarily affecting web users on the US East Coast
  • Second wave of attacks began around 1PM ET
  • Department of Homeland Security 'investigating all potential causes'
  • The ongoing interruption of its network resulting from a DDoS attack
  • DDoS attacks are a primitive form of hacking using botnets - networks of computers that hackers bring under their control

By Libby Plummer For Mailonline Daily Mail [UK] Published: 08:32 EST, 21 October 2016 Updated: 16:03 EST, 21 October 2016

A massive co-ordinated series of cyber attacks has forced hundreds of major websites from Amazon to Twitter offline across the globe.

The Department of Homeland Security launched an urgent investigation into the crash, amid claims it could be a precursor to an attempt to disrupt the US Presidential election.

Internet service company Dyn, which controls the 'address book' of the internet for dozens of major companies, said that it had suffered its first denial of service (DDoS) attack shortly after 6AM ET (11AM BST), in an attack that mostly affected the east coast of the US.

It confirmed a second attack at 1PM ET, which appeared to be centred on UK servers, and later said 'several' attacks were underway on servers across the globe, with the west coast being particularly badly hit.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible and Gillian Christensen of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the agency was 'investigating all potential causes.'

Political commentor Keith Olbermann even raised the possibility it could be a precursor to an attack on election ay.

'Say, not to panic anybody, but what if the (attacks) today were practice for 11/8 ?' he tweeted.

yeaaaaah.... The DHS never investigated democrats before, why would they start now? the targets are random but nit that random and whats more some of those sites are favored sites by white hats and black hats to discuss things... reddit aint the site that would be targeted for lolz. not in a major op fasion at any rate. no this just looks like an excuse to blame russians and limit conversation...

and i dont thin it matters if somebody does this on election day (another dnc tip off right there) cause the voting machines cant be Ddosed. thats ignorant. the daily mail is ignorant... bad propaganda.

They shut down "a major piece of the internet backbone," not individual sites.

Electronic voting

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Electronic voting (also known as e-voting) is voting using electronic means to either aid or take care of the chores of casting and counting votes. Depending on the particular implementation, e-voting may encompass a range of Internet services, from basic data transmission to full-function online voting through common connectable household devices. Similarly, the degree of automation may vary from simple chores to a complete solution that includes voter registration & authentication, vote input, local or precinct tallying, vote data encryption and transmission to servers, vote consolidation and tabulation, and election administration. A worthy e-voting system must perform most of these tasks while complying with a set of standards established by regulatory bodies, and must also be capable to deal successfully with strong requirements associated with security, accuracy, integrity, swiftness, privacy, auditability, accessibility, cost-effectiveness, scalability and ecological sustainability.

Electronic voting technology can include punched cards, optical scan voting systems and specialized voting kiosks (including self-contained direct-recording electronic voting systems, or DRE). It can also involve transmission of ballots and votes via telephones, private computer networks, or the Internet.

That is all the USA government has anymore. Blame, blame, blame but no proof about the boogeyman. Yet, when Hillary is clearly identified to include her dirty tricks upon Trump or her political party or her government job or her foundation or her husband ... she gets a pass with her hands in the kookie jar.

Amazing, ain't it?

It's amazing, alright. And Hillary's reference to 17 intelligence services includes all such services in the U.S., including, for example, Coast Guard intel. What she means is James Clapper said. That would be James Clapper, the guy who was caught red-handed lying to Congress and said he made what he thought was the least untruthful statement possible.

Joint Statement from the Department Of Homeland Security and Office of the Director of National Intelligence on Election Security

Release Date:
October 7, 2016

For Immediate Release
DHS Press Office
Contact: 202-282-8010

The U.S. Intelligence Community (USIC) is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations. The recent disclosures of alleged hacked e-mails on sites like DCLeaks.com and WikiLeaks and by the Guccifer 2.0 online persona are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts. These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the US election process. Such activity is not new to Moscow—the Russians have used similar tactics and techniques across Europe and Eurasia, for example, to influence public opinion there. We believe, based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only Russia's senior-most officials could have authorized these activities.

Some states have also recently seen scanning and probing of their election-related systems, which in most cases originated from servers operated by a Russian company. However, we are not now in a position to attribute this activity to the Russian Government. The USIC and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) assess that it would be extremely difficult for someone, including a nation-state actor, to alter actual ballot counts or election results by cyber attack or intrusion. This assessment is based on the decentralized nature of our election system in this country and the number of protections state and local election officials have in place. States ensure that voting machines are not connected to the Internet, and there are numerous checks and balances as well as extensive oversight at multiple levels built into our election process.

Nevertheless, DHS continues to urge state and local election officials to be vigilant and seek cybersecurity assistance from DHS. A number of states have already done so. DHS is providing several services to state and local election officials to assist in their cybersecurity. These services include cyber “hygiene” scans of Internet-facing systems, risk and vulnerability assessments, information sharing about cyber incidents, and best practices for securing voter registration databases and addressing potential cyber threats. DHS has convened an Election Infrastructure Cybersecurity Working Group with experts across all levels of government to raise awareness of cybersecurity risks potentially affecting election infrastructure and the elections process. Secretary Johnson and DHS officials are working directly with the National Association of Secretaries of State to offer assistance, share information, and provide additional resources to state and local officials.

That presents less evidence than Colin Powell shaking a test tube. The case is thinner than a soup made from the shadow of a pidgeon.

Considering the size of the assets required to choke a part of the backbone, such as Dyn, it is very possible that it was a state-sponsored action. So far, Russia and Iran have been blamed, and the New World Hackers have taken credit.

Also Wikileaks has told their supporters to knock it off.

I think it was all part of a plan to bring yukon back to LF by the canary clan. Their goal is singular: make you a homosexual.

I think it was all part of a plan to bring yukon back to LF by the canary clan. Their goal is singular: make you a homosexual.

It was a dark and stormy night. Buck and Deckard were on the couch watching Casablanca one more time. They kissed, they cuddled, and held hands as the emotion of the movie engulfed them. As the film ended, tears were streaming down their faces and they embraced. About then, yukon jumped up from the corner where he had been sitting silently. He was overtaken by the scene where Lauren Bacall leaves with Paul Henreid, and Bogie walks off with Claude Reins; by watching the passion of Buck and Deckard; and by the love theme, As Time Goes By. As the melody and the sound of Dooley Wilson filled his mind with creativity, he headed off to the MUD cave, not to emerge until he had rewritten the lyrics. As he wrote, the sound of Michael Jackson's mellifluous voice took over...

And when two lovers woo
As Buck and Deckard do
It’s not the same old story
The passion and the glory
That Adam felt for Eve,
Oh no, they lust for Steve.

You must remember this
A swish is just a swish, a guy is just a guy
The fundamental rules apply
They use K-Y...

The Magic Touch

Deckard was tucking Buck into bed when Buck asked, "Deck, will you sing me a song?" "Why, sure, I know a nice love song by the Platters called The Magic Touch. Do you remember that one?" "Oh yeah, I like that one." "Well, I've written special lyrics just for you. Use your imagination for the background singing. Here goes."

You've got the magic touch
You thrill my butt so much
Whip me with cane or crop
My darling please don't stop
Cause you have got -- the magic touch.

The moil, he did bris
And now there's only this
Just barely missed your nuts
Got nearly all your putz
Cause he didn't have -- the magic touch.

Now, even with the touch
Two inches isn't much
But sweetheart don't be miffed
If life gave you short shrift
Cause only you -- have got the gift
Bucky, only you -- have got the gift.

But it's a real pleasure
A liberal treasure
How it got here I haven't a clue
Wastin' away again in Margeritaville
Searchin' for my lost cranial vault
Some people claim there's a substance to blame
But I know, it's society's fault
I stepped on my roach clip
Threw out my left hip
Had to crawl all the way home
My brain's in a blender
It signalled surrender
To that substance that helps me hang on
The brownies are baking
And soon they'll be taking
All of my mind and my soul
My brain's in a blender
It signalled surrender
And now I'm a freepin' liberal troll
Wastin' away again in Margeritaville
Searchin' for my lost cranial vault
Some people claim there's a substance to blame
