They are located in mass transportation centers all over the USA & Europe. Often, in Europe, there are special locations such as the postoffice that also facilitates the use of publick telephones.
To answer your question, they are on their way out with modern cellular technology.
When I started policing in 1994, there were 11 pay phones in my county within 508 square miles. I know this because my training sergeant would test me and give me a time limit to drive to all of them (when the calls died down) as a way of me knowing my surroundings if my patrol car or portable radio should take a shit. We always prepared for the worst. Anyhow, the point is, by 2000, there was only two left. By 2004, none. I was even tested on knowing their phone numbers (at all times) and what ones you could actually call into. Only a few of them accepted incoming calls.
Needless to say, I kept much info written in my pocket notebook as a means for officer safety.
