'This Is Not My Party': George Will Goes from GOP to Unaffiliated

By Nicholas Ballasy

June 24, 2016

Political columnist George Will answers audience questions during a meeting of The Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan on Nov. 4, 2015, in Benton Township, Mich. (Don Campbell/The Herald-Palladium via AP)

WASHINGTON – Conservative columnist George Will told PJM he has officially left the Republican Party and urged conservatives not to support presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump even if it leads to a Democratic victory in the 2016 presidential election.

Will, who writes for the Washington Post, acknowledged it is a “little too late” for the Republican Party to find a replacement for Trump but had a message for Republican voters.

“Make sure he loses. Grit their teeth for four years and win the White House,” Will said during an interview after his speech at a Federalist Society luncheon.

Will said he changed his voter registration this month from Republican to “unaffiliated” in the state of Maryland.

“This is not my party,” Will said during his speech at the event.

He mentioned House Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) endorsement of Trump as one of the factors that led him to leave the party.

Will, a Fox News contributor, said a “President Trump” with “no opposition” from a Republican-led Congress would be worse than a Hillary Clinton presidency with a Republican-led Congress.

Will did not say if he would vote for the Libertarian Party nominee, former Gov. Gary Johnson (R-N.M.), telling the crowd he does not know whether or not the Libertarian ticket is going to help or hurt Clinton.

Because the Republican Party, at heart, is the party of business and big money, and not really of conservative middle class people, the MOST IMPORTANT THING to the GOP is money matters. It has been that way since the Presidency of Ulysses S Grant, and remains so.

Trump offers to make the party populist, representing the interests of middle and working class people, but it's in the interest of the moneymen to EXPLOIT those people, not to improve their lot.

The big thing this election is that the control of the Supreme Court for the next 30 years will be determined. Social conservatives will lose absolutely everything if Hillary is elected and installs her judges. But the moneymen of the Republican Party will not lose their money power. Hillary is already a strong ally of Wall Street. The moneymen know they are protected, and do not (and never did) give a damn about gay marriage, abortion or immigration. In fact, moneymen generally like a nice, liberal, tolerant society, because it makes it easier to handle mistakes, and when you've got lots of money, you have lots of options.

The sycophantic desire of middle class Republican people to kiss the ass of the moneymen and continue to support their party, no matter what, is really pathetic to behold.

Trump offers the prospect of building a new coalition, built on numbers of workers and voters, not money. Of course the Establishment hates that.

class war fare is dnc boiler plate

Big money has openly proclaimed its support for flooding this nation with "cheap" (for them) Third world labor - do you think that's in the interest of conservative middle class people, Boris?

Class warfare is now a valid concept because the corporate class has declared war on the middle class.

Immigration has always been the driving force of our economy

Even The Donald recognizes that a flood of low-skilled Third Worlders is a killing force to today's economy. Stop sucking corporate/GOPe c**k and get with the times.

I prefer these policies:

Increase prevailing wage for H-1Bs. We graduate two times more Americans with STEM degrees each year than find STEM jobs, yet as much as two-thirds of entry-level hiring for IT jobs is accomplished through the H-1B program. More than half of H-1B visas are issued for the program's lowest allowable wage level, and more than eighty percent for its bottom two. Raising the prevailing wage paid to H-1Bs will force companies to give these coveted entry-level jobs to the existing domestic pool of unemployed native and immigrant workers in the U.S., instead of flying in cheaper workers from overseas. This will improve the number of black, Hispanic and female workers in Silicon Valley who have been passed over in favor of the H-1B program. Mark Zuckerberg’s personal Senator, Marco Rubio, has a bill to triple H-1Bs that would decimate women and minorities.

Requirement to hire American workers first. Too many visas, like the H-1B, have no such requirement. In the year 2015, with 92 million Americans outside the workforce and incomes collapsing, we need companies to hire from the domestic pool of unemployed. Petitions for workers should be mailed to the unemployment office, not USCIS.

End welfare abuse. Applicants for entry to the United States should be required to certify that they can pay for their own housing, healthcare and other needs before coming to the U.S.

Immigration moderation. Before any new green cards are issued to foreign workers abroad, there will be a pause where employers will have to hire from the domestic pool of unemployed immigrant and native workers. This will help reverse women's plummeting workplace participation rate, grow wages, and allow record immigration levels to subside to more moderate historical averages.

Government should impose neither "diversity" nor uniformity - it's got quite big enough a job simply defending individual liberties.
