'This Is Not My Party': George Will Goes from GOP to Unaffiliated

By Nicholas Ballasy

June 24, 2016

Political columnist George Will answers audience questions during a meeting of The Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan on Nov. 4, 2015, in Benton Township, Mich. (Don Campbell/The Herald-Palladium via AP)

WASHINGTON – Conservative columnist George Will told PJM he has officially left the Republican Party and urged conservatives not to support presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump even if it leads to a Democratic victory in the 2016 presidential election.

Will, who writes for the Washington Post, acknowledged it is a “little too late” for the Republican Party to find a replacement for Trump but had a message for Republican voters.

“Make sure he loses. Grit their teeth for four years and win the White House,” Will said during an interview after his speech at a Federalist Society luncheon.

Will said he changed his voter registration this month from Republican to “unaffiliated” in the state of Maryland.

“This is not my party,” Will said during his speech at the event.

He mentioned House Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) endorsement of Trump as one of the factors that led him to leave the party.

Will, a Fox News contributor, said a “President Trump” with “no opposition” from a Republican-led Congress would be worse than a Hillary Clinton presidency with a Republican-led Congress.

Will did not say if he would vote for the Libertarian Party nominee, former Gov. Gary Johnson (R-N.M.), telling the crowd he does not know whether or not the Libertarian ticket is going to help or hurt Clinton.

Conservative columnist George Will

In a pig's eye.

'Will sounds not a little like David Brooks, Michael Lind, Jim Pinkerton and others from the Hamiltonian wing of the right. He laments the decrepit state of our public infrastructure. He wants more funding for basic science and research. He says he’d like to double the budget of the National Institutes of Health. He misses the old days of Americans’ can-do optimism, of the rigorous pursuit of the public good, as opposed to today’s “sagging” spirit and collective malaise. He rejects the idea of a “severe” nightwatchman state and says, anyway, we’re “never going back” to small government. During this riff, and not for the last time, Will quotes his old pal, the late Sen. Pat Moynihan, the neoconservative turned conventional liberal Democrat.' - September 16, 2013, www.theamericanconservati...eorge-wills-unsatisfying- explanation-for-libertarian-evolution/

Will, a Fox News contributor, said a “President Trump” with “no opposition” from a Republican-led Congress would be worse than a Hillary Clinton presidency with a Republican-led Congress.

Did he say why, or was this just another product of a hysterically distorted mentality issued as a confident decree.

Well, Dubya signed into law some jawdropping increases in discretionary nondefense spending, which were sent to him by a GOP Congress - whereas the last time the feds ran a surplus was when a President Clinton was opposed by a GOP Congress.

A government strong enough to impose your standards is strong enough to ban them.

Because the Republican Party, at heart, is the party of business and big money, and not really of conservative middle class people, the MOST IMPORTANT THING to the GOP is money matters. It has been that way since the Presidency of Ulysses S Grant, and remains so.

Trump offers to make the party populist, representing the interests of middle and working class people, but it's in the interest of the moneymen to EXPLOIT those people, not to improve their lot.

The big thing this election is that the control of the Supreme Court for the next 30 years will be determined. Social conservatives will lose absolutely everything if Hillary is elected and installs her judges. But the moneymen of the Republican Party will not lose their money power. Hillary is already a strong ally of Wall Street. The moneymen know they are protected, and do not (and never did) give a damn about gay marriage, abortion or immigration. In fact, moneymen generally like a nice, liberal, tolerant society, because it makes it easier to handle mistakes, and when you've got lots of money, you have lots of options.

The sycophantic desire of middle class Republican people to kiss the ass of the moneymen and continue to support their party, no matter what, is really pathetic to behold.

Trump offers the prospect of building a new coalition, built on numbers of workers and voters, not money. Of course the Establishment hates that.

class war fare is dnc boiler plate

Big money has openly proclaimed its support for flooding this nation with "cheap" (for them) Third world labor - do you think that's in the interest of conservative middle class people, Boris?

Class warfare is now a valid concept because the corporate class has declared war on the middle class.

I prefer these policies:

Increase prevailing wage for H-1Bs. We graduate two times more Americans with STEM degrees each year than find STEM jobs, yet as much as two-thirds of entry-level hiring for IT jobs is accomplished through the H-1B program. More than half of H-1B visas are issued for the program's lowest allowable wage level, and more than eighty percent for its bottom two. Raising the prevailing wage paid to H-1Bs will force companies to give these coveted entry-level jobs to the existing domestic pool of unemployed native and immigrant workers in the U.S., instead of flying in cheaper workers from overseas. This will improve the number of black, Hispanic and female workers in Silicon Valley who have been passed over in favor of the H-1B program. Mark Zuckerberg’s personal Senator, Marco Rubio, has a bill to triple H-1Bs that would decimate women and minorities.

Requirement to hire American workers first. Too many visas, like the H-1B, have no such requirement. In the year 2015, with 92 million Americans outside the workforce and incomes collapsing, we need companies to hire from the domestic pool of unemployed. Petitions for workers should be mailed to the unemployment office, not USCIS.

End welfare abuse. Applicants for entry to the United States should be required to certify that they can pay for their own housing, healthcare and other needs before coming to the U.S.

Immigration moderation. Before any new green cards are issued to foreign workers abroad, there will be a pause where employers will have to hire from the domestic pool of unemployed immigrant and native workers. This will help reverse women's plummeting workplace participation rate, grow wages, and allow record immigration levels to subside to more moderate historical averages.

This time I read through to the bottom of your ridiculous manner of posting. A funny thing about Republicans like you who are neither rich nor powerful nor very well educated is how superior you think you are. But you never learn anything, so you always lose. Your masters win, sure - they get richer, more powerful. But your kind always loses. And yet you trash talk like winners.

It makes me feel sorry for you, which is why I slum it down here with you, to try to teach you. It's my own form of taking up the White Man's Burden.
