It would have been impossible, even 5 months ago, for me to ever consider writing these words and actually meaning them. I could never imagine myself really cheering on ENGLAND, the hereditary foe. But here goes: RULE BRITANNIA! BRITANNIA RULE THE WAVES! BRITONS NEVER, NEVER, NEVER SHALL BE SLAVES! God Save the Queen! If the British do this thing, France will follow suit - the French people are really disgusted with the EU now, especially after Germany soiled the bed by opening up to millions of Muslim immigrants without consulting anybody. I was rooting for Scottish Independence because I really just hate the English. But if the English actually do it, if they really decide to recapture their sovereignty tonight, I will want to kiss every Englishwoman or Englishman I meet. GULP. Rule Britannia! GULP.
Why is it, "a wonderful surprise?"
It's a wonderful surprise for two reasons. First, the polls indicated that Remain would win. Second, there are so many trillions at stake that I assumed that the Remain forces would successfully rig the vote to ensure they got the result they wanted. So, seeing the Leave vote apparently surging, and seeing that it's actually apparently going to happen, it's wonderful. It's wonderful because so many other nations are chafing at the EU bit as well. France, Holland, Denmark, Sweden - their people all want to go. With England out, it will be very easy for France to do the same now. The EU could have been a grand thing. But it didn't live up to it promise. It became dominated by a narrow, strangling financial interest and lost the support of its people. But really, when the Germans simply opened up their borders, without consultation with their neighbors (with whom they have the open borders pact) and let in millions of Muslims, they effectively fed rat poison to the EU project. BREXIT means that the "yob" vote, the nationalist vote, wins. And that is a very good sign for Donald Trump too.

The margin of "victory" has decreased substantially since the original post. It's just too early to tell. Mayhaps another 6 hours will pass before we see any firming of the voting. Good comment.

Sure, I've got dignity. But we're talking power here and the future, and I'm keenly interested in seeing my views win. With Brexit, I have a surprise, smashing victory for my beliefs. Free immigration of French people into England, or English into French, or Dutch and Irish and Danes, all that - nobody cares about that. But free immigration of every Muslim who happens to get an immigration card from some dithering government on the periphery? NO! Just like the Mexican Border. NO, dammit - we have the right to determine who gets to be here.

You are confused about international agreements such as in the integration of free passage between member countries and a single currency in the EU, as opposed to separate nations that share a common border such as the US & Mexico with the Clinton NAFTA agreement which is a completely DIFFERENT approach to the respective neighborhood. I'm not confused about anything, buckeroo. Apparently, neither are the British people. They've been in the EU for a long time, and they've had their fill of it. Now they are leaving, reasserting their sovereignty, and charting their own course for the future. And immigration into their country at rates beyond which they were willing to tolerate was a core factor in their decision. America faces the same issue. The political classes and the economic classes view broad immigration as good for the country - as defined by their interests. But the broad back of the people do not. Because the political and economic classes refuse to listen and will not yield, they will have to be broken. By Trump. The issue is the same on both sides of the sea. It is why a Frexit will be on the cards next. The French are well and truly sick of it also, and they will be voting with their feet. The English example gives them an incredible boost in hope. I have only marginally paid attention to this, but my gut feeling is all the people I detest will hate this, and the people I like will feel comforted by this.

Definately sounds like a Leave victory, there must be some bureaucrats quaking in their boots when other referundums in France, Italy, Denmark and Holland will be taken later in the year. The global stock markets, debt markets and currency markets are going bat sh*t crazy. I am expecting to take about an overall 2-3% hit on an overall well balanced portfolio tomorrow morning. But like you I believe this is an over reaction and the markets will more or less rebound in the short term. Truth be told, it's a tantrum by the moneymen. Nationalism trumped economics. Hard. They don't like that, it's not in their playbook for major nations to do that. That would not be a retreat but an attack on our invaders. What would the Land of OZ do if illegals were pouring into your country by the secret boat loads in the same relative proportions to what has and is happening in the U.S.? Would you sh*t or go blind OR "retreat" behind walls along your shorelines? Are the kids of illegals born in your country automatically citizens of Oz? Do you permit anchor babies and allow their illegal extended families to stay in your country and put then all of them on the government dole, provide for their medical needs and schooling? The UK gave its answer of sorts to that question yesterday? Was that a retreat? For whatever Trump is, he might have the best answer to the illegal infestation problem of the U.S. but he sure has a better answer than anyone currently in power or prior or prospective. LOL so true. When the French officers came enmasse to my command post they smelled worse than we did. My unit was in the field without showers for over a month and they (the French) who just came from a 5 star hotel to the field location stunk up the joint. However the Dutch have them beat. We used to hand out 'care packages' of personal hygiene items to the Dutch or just leave it in their workspace hoping they would use it. They would take everything but the underarm deodorant. Go figure, the thing they needed most.
