Title: US GOP Congressman Just Admitted to Breaking the Law to Use Cannabis to Treat Pain

New York City commissioner Bill Bratton displayed the desperation of prohibitionists earlier this week, when he claimed that most drug violence in the city “is involving marijuana.” While such a ludicrous statement—which is actually an argument for legalization—can be disappointing, it is countered by the noble efforts of others in government.

For the first time in recent history, a sitting U.S. Congressman has admitted to using medical cannabis. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) made the comments at a meeting of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML).

Cannabis Radio reported:

““I haven’t been able to go surfing for a year-and-a-half and I’ve been in severe pain,” Rohrabacher explained, while trying to demonstrate the paddling motion surfers use to get out into a wave, “because I spent all this time doing that, which I can barely do now.”

“I went to one of these hempfests in San Bernardino,” he continued, explaining a vendor who showed him a cannabis-infused topical preparation to run into his aching shoulder. “And you know what? I tried it about two weeks ago, and it’s the first time… in a year-and-a-half that I’ve had a decent night’s sleep, because the arthritis pain was gone.”

The stunning admission is yet another sign that one facet of the war on drugs is quickly crumbling. The prohibition of cannabis has no basis in logic; it is instead founded on racism, corporate profiteering, and government corruption.

A recent CBS News poll found that 90 percent of Americans support medical cannabis use, and 56 percent support the legalization of recreational use. The Free Thought Project has reported on a myriad of studies finding medical benefits in cannabis, through a part of human physiology called the endocannabinoid system which medical science it just beginning to understand.

Because science and reason are breaking down the ignorance that sustains prohibition, 23 states and the District of Columbia now allow medical cannabis use, with four more expected this year. There is also a rumor that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency will downgrade cannabis from a Schedule 1 drug.

Rohrabacher’s comments were well-received by the audience, and he jabbed at the drug war police state that criminalizes the use of a plant.

“Now don’t tell anybody I broke the law,” said Rohrabacher. “They’ll bust down my door and, you know, and take whatever’s inside and use it for evidence against me. The bottom line is that… there’s definitely cannabis in there, and it makes sure that I can sleep now.”

The enlightened Congressman has been hard at work fighting within the system to end the unjust prohibition of a plant with miraculous abilities to treat a variety of ailments. Rohrabacher was instrumental in getting a measure passed that blocked the Department of Justice from using funds to go after medical cannabis patients and businesses in states where it is legal.

When the House Rules Committee considered a bill to create a federal task force on best practices in pain management—as the nation is undergoing an opioid epidemic—Rohrabacher sponsored an amendment that would have studied the “potential for marijuana to serve as an alternative to opioids for pain management.”

The amendment, along with others that would have surely acknowledged the benefits of cannabis, were stripped from the bill by prohibitionist lawmakers.

Rohrabacher is not the only lawmakers engaging in civil disobedience to challenge state injustice. As we reported in January, Georgia representative Allen Peake admitted that he brings medical cannabis into Georgia from states where it is legal, so he can ease the suffering of epileptic children.

“I got a text this morning from the mother of a young child who I delivered product to,” said Peake. “And the heartfelt thanks from this mother, the difference in this child – the increase in cognitive ability, the reduction in seizures, has been worth every bit of risk that I’ve taken.”

These noble lawmakers are standing with the people, and they will be on the right side when cannabis prohibition becomes just another sad chapter in U.S. history.

Good for him.

I broke the law using Laetrile to beat my cancer, you really think when faced with a slow linger death that anyone, with half a brain, cares about the 'law'?

Look, speaking as one faced with life or death, I came to this conclusion:

I am willing to die fighting for my life, are the forces of evil aka the g0vt, willing to die to prevent my living? I think not.

Unlike you and the repulsive ilk you align yourself with here, Rohabacher was eventually able to see the drug war for what it is and is actually smart enough to realize he was wrong.

In other words - he stopped drinking the "Reefer Madness" kool-aid.

I doubt that you ever will.

The government does not want anyone to use substances which have not been approved by them to treat illness.

It seems that some here would rather see you (or anyone for that matter) die than defy the government.

"... explaining a vendor who showed him a cannabis-infused topical preparation to rub into his aching shoulder."

I see. Because one anonymous vendor at a "hempfest" told him that some salve contained cannabis he is now in favor of legalization.

Save us from idiot politicians like these.

Nope, Dana is a long-time Libertarian pothead.

Your quote gave the impression that he was vehemently anti-pot.

Now he's a libertarian?

Make up your mind.

Either way, it must chap your ass that a Republican would defy the State and break the law to seek relief from pain.

No - he's in favor of legalization because it actually worked on his arthritis.

Dumbass.

A Libertarian pothead is in favor of legalization because HE says the salve, given to him by an anonymous vendor at hempfest, worked on his arthritis. He was told the salve contained cannabis, but it could have simply been Bengay in an unmarked jar, sold to a rube for 10X the cost.

It showed your "noble" politician was two-faced.

I guess in your simple-minded world, a politician is not allowed to develop new viewpoints whenever more information comes to light.

Of course - if Trump had done this, you'd be praising him for his insight and wisdom.

The militarization of police due to the war on drugs, government prosecuting citizens for using a medicinal plant, cops killing and maiming men, women and children in wrong house raids, killing people over minuscule amounts of a plant - these are hardly gnat-sized issues.

but it could have simply been

In the words of Hillary Clinton, "what difference does it make"

I do not go to church every time the doors are opened, but I love Jesus Christ. I am only human and fail Him daily. I believe Jesus is the Son of God, was born of a virgin, was crucified on a cross, died for my sins and rose from the dead and that He loves us dearly, and is faithful to forgive us of our sins. But He says that if you deny me in front of your friends I will deny you in front of my Father. Can I get an Amen!

I know that, as do the hundreds of others.

But big pharma has no worries, most will do nothing their doctor does not approve of.
